Living in Thailand, most TV shows aren't available here until WAY after the Western airdate, if ever.

I live in a pretty small town. Western movies don't play here, and if I travel an hour or so to a town where they do, they do they are dubbed in Thai with no English subtitles. DVDs are readily available, but they are usually pirated cam copies burned to disc, and again dubbed in Thai.

Games? Not available in stores in my town. Bangkok, sure -- but again they are almost always pirated copies burned to disk. Console games are the same way and any shops selling the game will also chip the console to play pirated disks. I could, and admittedly probably SHOULD use steam for PC games.

Other software? Basically same story as games. If you go to a computer store here, advertising usually says that they are sold with Linux OS or bare drives. But, the shop will automatically put on a pirated Windows plus loads of software (office, Photoshop if you ask for it, etc.) upon purchasing the hardware. They are usually fairly inept at it, frequently have viruses or fail to actually activate the OS, etc. so I tell them to leave the drives bare and do all that stuff myself. But for 99% of people who buy a PC here, they will automatically get a pirated OS and software along with it.

Basically, my default mode of getting ANY media is piracy. Price (free versus not) is a part of that. Incomes are low here, but cost of living is comparatively even lower. Still, if media was fully available here but equal to the price in, say, the US the vast majority of people here don't have enough disposable income to afford much if any of it. A bigger issue for me personally is convenience. Piracy (torrents, etc.) as a distribution system is infinitely more convenient, easy, and "customer"-friendly than any more legitimate service. I get what I want very quickly, usually in multiple options for filesize vs quality on up to as-good-as-broadcast/blu-ray 1080p, with most everything available from a single source (isoHunt, kickass, PirateBay, take your pick). In terms of user experience, legitimate distribution can't even begin to compete with that -- and that is BEFORE considering price.

Instead, they exacerbate the difference by treating paying customers with open contempt. Pay for TV service? Enjoy 10 minutes of ads for every 12 minutes of show. Buy a DVD? Sit through un-skippable ads, dire piracy warnings, etc. before the show actually starts. Move or simply take the disk on vacation to another country and you will likely be screwed by region locking. Buy software? Get some DRM that slows things down or restricts fully NORMAL use of the software, nags you to register, etc. On the other hand, if you pirate stuff all of that goes away. No ads. Watch/use the media wherever you want, whenever you want, on whatever device you want. Software DRM circumvented easily, usually hours after the first release if not *before*.

I honestly see it as a problem that I am not supporting the creators of the media that I enjoy. But, Pandora's box has been opened on this one. Generation X and Y learned to scoff at the idea of paying for music due to Napster. iTunes has been extremely lucky to turn that around even slightly, making lots of mistakes along the way (DRM and device-locking, etc.). Gen Y and beyond are going to have the same attitude towards piracy with regards to ALL MEDIA that we learned to have towards music. I don't think there is any getting around that.

For content creators, I think that funding via Label / Publisher / Network is going to die out. And soon. The good news is that something akin to an evolution of patronage of arts and creators can work even better than it did in the past. The Motzarts and Beethovens of the future don't need 1 rich duke or king to commision a work, they need 10,000 average Joes on kickstarter or the like. I see things trending more and more in that direction, and all the time. I think it is an exciting time -- unless you're an exec in one of the old dinosaur publishers/networks.

I loved his show "The F Word" it was a truer Gordon, He took a bunch of heat from PETA cause he showed his son how to kill a rabbit on the air, they trapped one and broke it's neck backwards for insta kill. Then he had his son dispatch the next one. On a later show he cut a lambs neck to bleed it as it hung upside down then butchered it. Then on another episode brought a deer in draped over his shoulders to the kitchen.

and another episode killing puffin in Iceland got him a lot of PETA controversy.

I love that show The F Word, you can download every uncensored episode on torrent sites like kat.ph or thepiratebay.se since it doesn't air anymore all 4 seasons and they don't censor any of the episodes.

Get it sifted if it's not already on. The mp3 was really hard to find. Couldn't buy it as it was a strictly limited vinyl release. Best torrent I ever got.

We all try to get something for nothing or as close to it as possible. Its called capitalism. Even when we find a good deal we look for a better deal even if it leads to Torrents.

The video shows the humanity of man. Truly we all want to be fair, honest and just and we are at the personal level.

By the simple act of asking, that personal connection is made and our humanity towards one another is manifest.

I'm a stimulus junky, as I'm sure we all are, but I've gotten to the point where there are too many musicians, film makers, video game makers, for me to possibly pay all of them the asking price.

Last year I decided to stop stealing music. I spent well over $1,000 on iTunes. I torrented a lot of movies, but I also purchased a good number of blue ray discs. I also purchased a shit ton of games off of Steam, as well as illegally downloading a couple. (I also paid ~500 dollars on live concerts, including an Iron Maiden show that cost me $150.)

There are very few things I can stand to listen/watch/play more than 2 or 3 times, then I need to listen/watch something else, but I can't afford ALL the required stimulus to keep me sane.

I also need my drug money and gas because THERE IS NO PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION WHERE I LIVE. So inevitably I have been car obsessed, so there's more money that I'm freeing myself of.

Am I a bad person? If I didn't torrent a video, does that mean I'm going to buy it? At some point you run out of frivolous spending cash... And then how do you consume the junk that artists create? Do I just stop? How does that help an artist? I dunno, just rambling. I'm depressed and addicted to entertainment.

Personally, I think artists are talented scam artists with an unnecessary product that I LOVE and will steal if I can't afford it.

I'd love to, but I genuinely believe in rewarding creators, even if that creator is "Hollywood" or "labels" or whatever other faceless entity that can afford to be ripped off.

Amanda Palmer didn't come out of obscurity and raise $1.2 million on kickstarter. She was an established artist. An unknown band down the road won't raise that money.

Oh and since people are gonna hate this anyway, living statues are the single least creative bit of street theatre ever.

Data transmission in modern worlds follows rules of contention.
ISP's typically provision their networks with 1:50 or higher contention ratios, because they know that 50 people on any normal day wont use up 1 torrent-user's typical bandwidth consumption under full saturation.

The ratios are calculated from the average access edge speeds....say avg speed is 3mbps, they could provision 50 customers to share 3mbps in the core network before they consider upgrading.

Contention....noone uses the entire networks bandwidth the entire time its available. Otherwise networking equipment and access costs would be 50 times greater!!

Its just not efficient to plan for everyone to saturate everyones links at the same time and not have a bottleneck....because 99% of the rest of the time, noones using shit on average. What a waste of power, space, equipment, service fees, support contracts, engineers to maintain the equipment / network etc..etc...etc...
