Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Daily Fantasy Sports

MilkmanDan says...

"Unavoidable marketing campaign" makes me glad that I live in Thailand, filter all web traffic through adblockers, and torrent all TV and other media content with ads removed.

Some of my friends here stream live sports, but since a 7PM game in the US ends up being a roughly 7AM game in Thailand I never do that. Torrents can be found for pretty much all NFL games and some NHL games (used to be a private tracker for NHL but it got shut down and I haven't found a real solid alternative) which is all I care about, and I don't care about it not being live. I guess that live streaming including ads confirms that preference for me...

Ahh I'm thinking of crimson bow (Edit: Actually there is an animated movie cut of the series too, god I hate it when they do this). I'm not waiting for this at all, I just thought I had seen it on the torrents. The discussions and the original trailer (which didn't show any 3d gear sequences) made me give it a pass. I see there is 3d gear in the movie but the FX still seem a little on the cheesy side.

No I have not. I will torrent it and check it out. Thanks!

Ex Machina -- have you seen that one?

If not, give it a shot. Best AI-themed movie I've seen in quite some time.

Messed with my head though, big time. It poses the sort of questions that lurk in the back of your head, only to emerge again at night, when you least want your brain to run on all cylinders, if you know what I mean.

Living with Lag - An Oculus Rift experiment

1000Mbit doesn't necessarily equate to lower latency anyway, and then Up/Download speed isn't even that important for online gaming, unless you want to stream/torrent/uploadselfies while playing. It is however a nice number that's easy to stick on marketing material. I had a huge fight with an ISP a few years ago after they pretty much flat refused to do anything about crippling packet loss of 10ish% at peak times because it had a "negligible effect on bandwidth". Pretty sad that I get much more reliable net over ADSL copper lines at 10ish Mbit than I had on fiberoptic.

Perhaps they should have actually done an ad about lag, instead of one about latency. If an ISP can't get that right, probably best to look for another ISP.

Man, there are so many sites where you can watch EVERY episode of television known to man. I guess the general public will always flock to the same overcrowded pool thinking it's the best evar.

Awesome. I've been listening to his podcast, DVDASA, for over a year, but I'd never heard of him before and have been very curious to see Thumbs Up. I've unsuccessfully tried torrents, but never thought to check YouTube.

You may be right- I was way too high at the time to remain confident in my assessment-I think the theater had the damn volume turned-up too high maybe....I'll revisit it through the wonder of torrents.

depending on how much data you have, this actually should be relatively easy to spot/stop.

It takes a while to encrypt a lot of data. With so many people using torrenting more and more to download large video files. Its going to take a long time for it to encrypt all of that. Now yeah, if you just have a bunch of spreadsheets and word documents in your my docs folder, yeah you're probably fucked. But IMO, you shouldn't keep small docs like that on your computer, you keep them on a flash drive not always connected to your computer. Just following with the idea that nothing critically important should be connected 24/7 to the internet anyway.

If you see your hard drive active non-stop even when you're not doing anything, that's your first clue something is amiss.
