I'm a fan of Jody Hill's dark sensibilities. He also doesn't think of the movie as a typical comedy; and it is not. It's dark and dismal. The lead character is quite racist and quite delusional.

From http://www.filmschoolrejects.com/features/jody-hill-observe-and-report-interview.php

When Hill describes his movie as a comedy, it’s clear that he’s uneasy about the moniker - a new reality to deal with while working with a major studio. It’s much easier for a marketing team to tell the public at large that something is a comedy or a drama, something that fits neatly into those two boxes, than to make a trailer that tries to capture the true nature of a movie that should (if it succeeds) make you laugh during the dramatic parts and give you pause during the funnier sections.

When the film played at SxSW - the crowd was ideal for the screening. It was a huge audience all revved up and ready to laugh. Of course, it also helped that Seth Rogen’s hearty, boisterous laugh filled the room along with everyone else. It’s a funny movie - but even Hill doesn’t think that it will have the same hilarious effect in the general release.

“I don’t know if the movie is going to play quite as funny to people who are watching it at home. I tend to think it’s kind of a sad movie,” he says.

Mogwai - Travel is Dangerous

Yep. I was there. It was the SXSW show at Austin Music Hall. That's actually where I saw the woman cry and bury her head in her boyfriends chest.

That show was the loudest of theirs I've seen, by far. It felt like I was listening to speakers in a trashcan with my head shoved into the can.

But, man, good show. Glad you saw it!

Mogwai - Travel is Dangerous

Hey omni, I saw them in that config during the SxSW festival back in 2000-ish, at some big venue whose name I can't remember (probably Austin Music Hall), but it was about 5 blocks from Antones (I rememebr that because Eric Johnson was playing the same night as Mogwai, but at Antones). They definitely had a lot more folks on stage with them than normal, but no idea if it was Trail of the Dead or what.

I saw them a few other times in Austin as well (although I lived in SF at the time, and now live in Seattle) so we've probably passed in the night as you say.

Petty Booka - Hula Dips - Japanese Cuteness!

Austin during SXSW one year... at one of the "Japan Nite" venues. They're such cuties, and they had the ENTIRE punkish crowd eating out of their hands. Nobody wanted them to leave... they were in hula skirts and everything!
