Stalked by a Cougar

newtboy says...

Thanks, but a life without bacon is not one I want to live. I know the risks and accept them. I know the costs and offset them.
You can still try to convince them. Maybe at least then they won't have 10. Idiocracy is prophetic, trick them into watching it.

My large but finite footprint with no kids is smaller than a Sudanese with 2 kids who each have 2 kids who each have two kids in perpetuity. In the short term, lifestyle changes might be useful (but nearly impossible to sell), but long term, absolutely nothing works but population control, so it's more important imo. Also, since having no children is self beneficial, it's easier to sell to the selfish.

Absolutely agree with you, but if I can't convince someone intelligent like you to eat a plant-based diet, I don't like my chances att convincing Sharleen and Damien from having 5 kids :-)

The other thing is if you look at the consumption in Western civilisation, we use somethng like 80% of the resources, even though our populations are the smallest. Which would suggest it's mostly lifestyle related.

The thing is though: Glenn Beck can't deport anyone. The Westboro Baptist church can't lock people up for being gay. Fox News has no control of anything, they're just a news outlet.

In Israel on the other hand, it looks like there are actual people in power who do have the power to imprison the Sudanese in a specially-built prison just for them, where they stay until the Israeli government is ready to deport them. That's what's show in the video.

So, the comparison to US television isn't all that fitting. Sure, it's not showing you or your ilk, but it's still not an apt comparison. It's nothing like this.

Sorry to burst your bubble people but this "report" is biased beyond belief.

It's quite similar to the type of bullshit you see every day on networks like Fox and to the unbearable ignorance of Christian Republicans. Showing video clips of religious leadership and right-wing mobs expressing that ignorance as if it represents the Israeli society as a whole is retarded. It's the equivalent of showing Glenn Beck videos as a portrayal of the US's stance on immigration.

South Sudan vs. Sudan: Interview

South Sudan has announced a withdrawal

Thanks for both the update and the video Longde. Here's a few lines from Al Jazeera's coverage of recent changes there:

Sudan's President Omar al-Bashir has said his troops have defeated South Sudanese forces who occupied his country's main oilfield, but added that the battle was not over.

"They started the fighting and we will announce when it will end, and our advance will never stop," Bashir told a rally attended by thousands in Khartoum on Friday.

He dismissed a statement by his southern counterpart Salva Kiir that the troops which had invaded Heglig - which accounts for about 50 per cent of Sudan's oil - had withdrawn.

"There is no withdrawal. We beat them by force ... Until now, their people are running," Bashir, wearing an olive army uniform, said at military headquarters.

Circumcision - Another Form of Child Abuse

Fuck off anyone who defends this shit. It was done to me. I can't say I have suffered any adverse affects from it... who knows? I don't know any better I guess. Still... Nature has this shit covered. Leave it alone! "Oh, it gets dirty." Ok, so cut off your fucking ears and asshole. They get dirty pretty easy also. Or would you rather just spend 10 seconds to clean it? Yeah... thought so. Same thing. Obvious religious bull shit that has seeped into even secular thought as OK. WHY? Fucking WHY? Insanity. Stupidity. "Tradition." Yeah. Go congratulate the Sudanese who just cut their daughter's clits off on a job well done. Same fucking thing.

Mubarak Resigns!!!!!!

Indeed. What's the worst-case scenario for the more hawkish US policymakers here? Perhaps that the Egyptian people actually manage to create something resembling a stable democracy without US military intervention...
>> ^Fusionaut:
It's amazing that they got results without the United States invading their country. I guess the Americans are just too busy elsewhere.

The worst case scenario is that the Hamas end of the Muslim Brotherhood ends up seizing control of Egypt, eventually leading to another large scale war between Egypt and Israel. I suppose worst case would also mean the Egyptian scenario emboldening the Sudanese North into starting the civil war all over again too.

A more likely scenario though is a lot of instability leading to more woes for the Egyptian people than anyone else.

Point is that despite how good it is to be rid of a dictatorship, the end result is yet to be seen. More often than not dictators that are chased out are replaced by another one within a decade, and generally that dictator is even more brutal and harsh than the one before him. After all, even Al Jazeera openly observes that it was the relative tolerance of Mubarak's regime that allowed the protests to succeed where those in Syria and Iran have faltered under much more brutal suppression.

hmm.

On one hand, I find the production quality of these bids for our sympathies distasteful and disingenuous in light of the true Human Suffering Event they represent; both with the utter commonness of such stories one encounters in hospital [and this is rather run-of-the-mill, imho] and the fact that most every person could claim an 'equal' Human Suffering Event or two in their life, I ask cynically "what makes you think your suffering is so special" and immediately suspect this is just a ploy to 'get rich' from donations [sure, the tragedy may be real, but do they REALLY need my paypal dollar more than the Sudanese, or me for that matter].

On the other hand, I got to get myself a production and marketing team...

<edit>
I guess what bugs me about this is the generic portrayal of this story. This could be ANY family with a young child in need of a transplant [or serious medical care, for that matter], and everyone could just as easily be actors. What makes this a story about Penny, specifically, or the life-changing effects of such a transplant on the Gormans? It comes off feeling like a PSA.

If this video is to garner charities, then one would like to get some sort of hook into the lives of the receiving family. This is gereric suffering, by what we see here, and nothing about Penny other than she is adorable...but so's my kid.

Let me take you to the movies
