Understanding the worst power outage in N. America ever
I was in downtown Toronto when this happened... middle of afternoon power drops and I left work... was closest thing to a zombie movie I've ever experienced... luckily I was close to freeway and was on the road so quickly... but looking down off the Gardiner Expressway I could see the city surface streets were just completely packed with cars and electric streetcars blocking up all the uncontrolled intersections... no one could get to the freeway and it was just me driving up there... then later when I had to go back downtown at night to find someone, the freeways had cars that had run out of gas scattered along the sides the whole way there.. unreal.
Really Cool, Old and Super Dangerous Elevator
ya well people weren't so stupid back then. They also had exposed radiators in every schoolroom and streetcars on most commercial streets.
Canadian Protestors Swarm Toronto Police Department
Thing that creeps me out is the yelling then 3 pop pop pop then about a 3 second pause then 6 more pops, why the pause? why only one cop shooting?
Obviously disturbed man ALONE on a streetcar, confined. They could have used riot sheilds,I saw cops take a sword weilding guy down with a ladder and water cannon. They could have used tear gas, waited him out, non-lethal rubber rounds......shooting someone is the LAST option, this cop jumped the gun. (no pun intended)
Canadian Protestors Swarm Toronto Police Department
^ Here's another news article which includes footage. There seems to be zero dispute that the deceased was pacing back and forth on a street car wielding a knife prior to being shot.

Snowden handed another set of slides over to the largest newspaper in Germany as well as a public broadcasting service. These slides include the names of telecoms that were involved in GCHQ's dragnet program.
The crème de la crème:
Verizon Business, Codename: Dacron, British Telecommunications ("Remedy"), Vodafone Cable ("Gerontic"), Global Crossing ("Pinnage"), Level 3 ("Little"), Viatel ("Vitreous"), Interoute ("Streetcar").
Many of these are customers of DE-CIX, the world's largest IXP, whose operators were adamant in their claim that no foreign service has access to their infrastructure -- no word about their corporate lackeys, understandably so.
And you gotta love how brazen they are in their admission that GCHQ's work is in the best interest of Britain's economy -- yes, economy.
And while we're at it: public broadcast journalists dug out a list of 207 US companies that are involved in intelligence gathering on German soil. Best comment was by the CEO of DE-CIX: these providers (re: Level 3) work in accordance with US law, even in Frankfurt. Not German law, US law.
Maybe we can still beat Puerto Rico in the race to become your 51st state.

Hardly recognize the city anymore. We had a Keele streetcar?
Behold The Majesty of Simcity GlassBox Simulation
Yeah, the whole simcity saga has really taken a downturn. A lot of the negative press has been on the always on DRM and the conflicting reports of how "hard" it would be to turn it off when its already been disabled by a few users.
The focus should move towards this and actual gameplay problems. The traffic issues are really bad as well with sims making really retarded driving decisions. Not to mention that the population count isnt accurate, as well as the problems with "not enough workers" even after people have built entire cities with nothing but residential zoning. There are still endless bugs, like streetcars disappearing or casino towns not being viable thanks to tourist problems.
The whole DRM issue seems strange to me because its like arguing that a poorly designed game has DRM and not the other way around. The game does work well at times but it seems that the whole "agent" system they use that starts to make the game fun at the same time seems to cause problems and take away from the fun.
Star Wars Audition - Amy Irving & Christopher Allport
Ah,Ha ha ha - Holy Crap - I'm glad these guys weren't given the roles - that felt more like a Streetcar Named Desire or some James Dean movie.
Stella Shout Out New Orleans Tennessee Williams Festival 200
>> ^bareboards2:
Here is my second best New Orleans story -- first night there, I am sitting in a bar/restaurant, listening to a great classical jazz band, when I look out the huge plate glass window. Coming down the street .... A Bus Named Desire.
(Desire is the name of the neighborhood Stanley and Stella lived in; Streetcar named Desire was a streetcar headed to that destination.)
Next night, walking down Bourbon St and my attention is caught by a young man, blond, good-looking, who is clearly pissed at his trailing girlfriend. Total yuppy, wearing a pink Izod polo shirt and pastel Madras shorts. Yelling at his girlfriend to catch up: "Stella. Stella. STELLA."
I was happy. A bus named Desire and a yuppy yelling Stella.
LOL LOL I didn't know Stella was such a common name down south.

The Creaking Tree String Quartet - Little Green Men
A great live performance on a moving streetcar in Toronto! I can't figure out how the rest of the riders seem so ambivalent though.
There's a difference between a 'captive' audience and one that's held hostage. Maybe they didn't appreciate music they can't walk away from. Just a guess.
Airs - La Femme D'Argent [Set to footage from 1905]
very cool video.
i lost count of how many people were "playing chicken" with this streetcar, other cars and horses
also it looks like for some reason people back then were walking taking HUGE steps.

There's at least one other D.S. vid on the Sift -- not mine! They perform on a San Fran streetcar: http://www.videosift.com/video/Delta-Spirit-Trashcan

Police Handles Skateboarder Situation
>> ^asynchronice:
Is skateboarding seriously illegal anywhere in San Francisco ? If so, that's ridiculous.
From the City and County of San Francisco Board of Supervisors' web site [emphasis mine]:
Shuffle Demons - "Spadina Bus"
Yeah, it's too bad that the Spadina Bus doesn't exist anymore but 'Spadina Streetcar' just isn't the same
