how social justice warriors are problematic

SDGundamX says...

@enoch

No, no, no, man, I would never downvote something because the speaker held an opinion about a certain topic that I disagreed with. Rather, I downvoted this because the subtext of the video is clear: you don't have to listen to what SJWs say because they are self-important blowhards who were coddled as children. Doesn't matter what the argument is that they are proposing. They are SJWs and therefore their ideas cannot be worth listening to.

And more specifically, if you pay attention to the images he is showing as he narrates his stance: you don't have to listen to what Anita Sarkeesian, Zoe Quinn, etc. say about games (he's showing their pictures while decrying SJWs).

This is classic GamerGate tactics. Rather than actually debate the issues, which are the representation (or lack thereof) of women and other minorities in video games, he wants to dismiss the argument out of hand. You see it all the time in GamerGate supporter comments:

"Anita is a con artist looking to scam Kickstarter supporters out of their money."
"Anita is the feminist equivalent of a TV evangelist."
"Anita has hijacked feminism."
"Anita isn't even a real feminist."
"Anita's not really a gamer."

And so on.

They are desperate to get people to dismiss Anita's criticisms out of hand, mostly because even the most ardent haters can't deny there are problems with the representation of women and other minorities in ALL media, some of which are specific to video games.

It's all a big distraction from the issues. So what if everything GamerGate supporters allege is actually true? So what if she were stealing kickstarter money? So what if she is pushing some kind of feminist agenda in games? So what if she has appointed herself as a spokeperson for feminism?

Even if it were all true, the only important question is whether her arguments about the representation of women in games are valid and well-founded.

So, I downvoted this because essentially the author is advocating judging arguments on the basis of the arguer's reputation (for example, as an SJW) rather than on the merits of the argument itself. I see it as more blatant GamerGate propoganda trying to justify attacking the argument makers rather than dealing with the argument itself. Fuck that noise.

SJW is such a useless label at this point. It is now used purely as a cop out these days, a pejorative that supposedly gives you a free pass to ignore what someone is saying because clearly they are an coddled idiot (otherwise they wouldn't be an SJW).

I absolutely agree with you that justice, freedom of speech, freedom of dissent, etc. are important. And it is troubling that people in recent days are abusing the system to shut down dissenters. But this is the world we live in now and it really only reflects the political situation in Washington that has been going on nearly a decade now--lines drawn in the sand and ideas shouted down merely because they were spoken by someone on the wrong side of the line. I guess it isn't surprising that public debate is mirroring what we've been seeing in the capitol, only with the anonymity of the Internet allowing people to take it to a whole new level with doxxing, swatting, etc.

NOW It Makes Sense Why Preachers Need Private Jets

AeroMechanical says...

I'm pretty open minded about religion, but I think if you have actual two-way spoken conversations with God in English, you may be schizophrenic or at the very least have a bit of an ego problem. Also, here you are, having a chat with the all-knowing, omnipotent, omnipresent creator of the universe, and best you can do is make small talk about what you plan to do with your private airplane? Granted, I'd probably find myself a little tongue tied in that situation, but I'd at least try for something more significant--at least enough to write a short epistle.

Star Citizen: From Pupil to Planet

And again, spoken like someone who doesn't seem to know anything about the game.

Large portions of the game are available to play right now, albeit in an early alpha state. Granted, yes the procedural planets portion is not in our hands yet, but as OverLord just showed, it appears to be working.

Having worked with Chris Roberts in the past, I would take everything sold with a grain of salt until you actually see it in the final product. If you ever do.

He is a fantastic salesman though, I'll give him that. Nice guy too.

Camel Flings Man by the Head

newtboy says...

Obviously, since I have called snuff on many a video to have them removed, no, if his neck was snapped it would not be A-OK.....

BUT....

You continue to completely ignore the clearly stated issue put forth, which is that you labeled this video in such a way that there's absolutely no warning you are going to be seeing any such disturbing thing. I expected to see a man to get his hair or head bitten and watch him be tossed by a camel, not a terrifying (for the camel) poorly done third world live butchering of a large animal. If the title had said any such thing, I would have just ignored the video, since you STILL have up the title, knowing full well that it's tricking people who don't want to see animals be butchered alive into watching, you deserve far more than a downvote in my opinion.

As to your whine that I could have said something about the title before downvoting, well now I and many other people have spoken up and you still have the same no-warning title, so my only regret is that I have but one vote to downvote it with. Clearly speaking up made absolutely no difference. Besides, it's not like I inappropriately downvoted your pure fact comment...like you did to @charliem, I properly downvoted a video I didn't like with a title that tricked me into seeing it at all.

And will you please go learn what censorship is before whining about it again. Being asked to retitle something many people find offensive that you titled with a 'completely misses the point' title is not censorship.

So a man nearly getting his neck snapped is a-okay but animal butchery is not...seems you would disdain both with a passion. There is a happy channel out there where they have videos expressly for certain people.

Finally, Stephen's Tolkien Geekdom Pays Off

gorillaman says...

It brings me so much pleasure just to hear these names spoken on a popular tv show. His pronunciation though, of Gollum, Sauron and Edain - ugh - and the flame of Anor and the secret fire aren't the same thing. Come on, Stephen.

I demand crystal purity in my Tolkien geekdom. But I would like to hear him tell us about Beren and Luthien, it is a badass story; or, say, just devote the next twenty episodes of his show to reciting the Lay of Leithian in its entirety.

Emotionally manipulating commercial that I liked...

JustSaying says...

Capitalism is a guideline or system of how to organise aspects of society (trade, labour and services for example), nothing more. How you use it defines its effect on us. I could sell you my child explicitly for the purpose of you raping it and it would show how evil capitalism is. Or I sell you my children's book explicitly for the purpose of you entertaining your own children and that would be quite nice.
The problem starts if you think everything needs to be a for profit business as capitalism should be unlimited. Then you live in a country that makes prisons privately owned businesses and thinks it's ok to bankrupt sick people and their families with medical bills.
Capitalism is as evil as the people controling it. Who allows these people to be evil? Who cares? Apparently not the majority.
However, all that is not the problem of this ad. The capitalism works to nobodies disadvantege here. Edeka tries to brand itself as family-friendly and established part of homelife. That is quite normal and acceptable for a grocery store. It is not like as if VW would be putting out ads on how honest they are.
The version of the ad I described as being better is as manipulative as this one with the exception that it doesn't make everyone look like assholes upon closer inspection.
Nobody nailed grandpa's door shut, he's allowed to step into the world and make new friends and other aquaintances. His isolation is understandable but mostly his own fault. I witnessed stuff like that myself, I have grandparents too.
On the other hand you bemoan the smombies of today. Do you see the irony of complaining about the screen-fixed stare of todays youth (and society in general) on an internet forum?
We created a distraction-addicted, short-term attention-spanned and self-affirming society on our own by willingly swallowing all the crap the distraction industry throws at us.
I don't have a twitter account because nothing I can say in 140 characters without established context is worth saying. That gotta mean something coming from me of all people.
I'm not on Facebook because I know what the 'StaSi' was and see no reason to do their work on my own person for Mr. Zuckerberg and his shareholders.
I have no internet connection on my cellphone because I prefer to know stuff instead of just looking it up. I don't write text messages all the time because I prefer spoken words with their complexity that simplifies communication instead of emojis that emulate things my face did since before cellphones stopped being science-fiction.
I choose not to stare at the palm of my hand and what's lying in it every 5 minutes because I can. Most of our modern society chooses differently. They chose poorly, as the real oldtimers would say.
And here we are, yet again, ranting about the evils of enticing screens in our lives, live on the internet. You know, we would not be this absurd joke if we'd sat at a dinnertable right now. With food and drink from Edeka.

Lawdeedaw said:

No, capitalism is cynical and manipulative in general. It also promotes freedom in general, ie., the antithesis to community. Is it no wonder we bemoan the fact that kids are more into their ipads then the dinner table? But we promote that as entitled, and how dare someone tell you how to live. Etc., so forth and so on.

And btw, sleazier ads sell better than wholesome ads. So "they could have done it better" is actually only your opinion but makes very little economic sense. I used to say the same thing about Jerry Springer, then I looked at the dumbass audience that watches it...

The All-Seeing NostraDonald

dannym3141 says...

What the fuck is going on here? Is this real politics? This is an obviously stupid, ignorant man. It's as though he has verbal diarrhea - he just can't stop exaggerating and making things up as though he's a kid in a playground, with no thought for evidence or substance, i'm expecting any minute for him to say that his dad can lift a house, he's been to the moon three times and he's been made Earth President by the alien high council. How the hell can he make so much progress in his bid for the American PRESIDENCY?

"I don't know where i saw the video, but i know i saw it because i have the world's greatest memory"
Those words were spoken in absolute seriousness by a leading presidential candidate for the US in 2015 when justifying a racist comment about muslims. I write this for posterity so future historians are left in no doubt, when the video is long gone, when all we have are fossils of internet text, because our civilisation violently died when President Trump took the west to nuclear war because he thought his dad is better than Putin's dad.

You can trust my memory. Where did i see it? I don't remember.....

@bobknight33 - whereas those right wing comedians have been absolutely killing the ratings as of late. They don't exist because as Chris Rock said comedy should always be punching upwards - so where is the comparison to say whether or not a right wing comedy show would do so much better? Personally i very rarely find Colbert funny, but that's because i don't find him funny, not because i think he's left wing - hence i wouldn't watch his show regardless of politics. It's your burden to prove that his political leanings have anything to do with his ratings.

Woman Executed by Cop Because She “Might Be Smoking Pot"

Stormsinger says...

Believe it or not, I do understand the problem with the "thin blue line" mentality. I'm quite sure I've spoken out about it more than once here on the sift. But I strongly object to painting everyone in any group with a single brush. Hell, I even know some decent Republicans.

Claims that one case, or a hundred cases, prove that there are no good cops are absurd and unsupportable. Just as absurd and unsupportable as those claims made here and there that there are no bad cops.

newtboy said:

One more instance of cops covering for each others murders. I only wish I could be surprised by this, but sadly this is exactly how criminal cops are treated almost every time. It took over 4 years to get any charge at all, and that only came about because of public shaming and investigation (the only investigation in this murder) by the local news, and there must have been not only absolutely zero investigation but actual cover up at the scene by the entire force (at least every one involved in any way with the 'investigation') for his story to have held up at all in the first place. There was clearly no GSR test done on him, or it would have shown he shot her...and the investigators had to actually HIDE the testimony of most or all of the witnesses to further his story that she shot herself (with his secured gun) and actively help him claim he wasn't involved.

That, @Stormsinger, is why so many people no longer believe in the 'good cop'. That doesn't mean the cops can't EVER act properly or 'good', it means that, in this and far too many other cases, entire forces are obviously, unavoidably complicit in crimes up to and including murder (if you help cover it up, you're complicit...that's the law), and murderers are bad, period, no matter how many little old ladies they help across the street or how professionally they act when they're not being actively or passively criminal.

(before someone jumps on the 'passively criminal' phrase as ridiculous, please note that it's the law that an officer MUST act to stop any serious crime they are aware of, and not doing so is being actively criminal by intentionally shirking their sworn duties).

Kiwi Pronounces eYes

ChaosEngine says...

Yeah, there's an old joke which actually got me a few years ago:

Obviously, this is meant to be spoken rather than written.

what does "em eh cee dee oh en eh el dee " spell? MacDonald
what does "em eh cee cee eh are tee haich why " spell? MacCarthy
what does "em eh cee haich eye ehn eee" spell?

Lots of people will say MacHine.

I feel for him. I constantly get mind-stuck like that. Get locked into a pattern that takes a concerted effort to back out of. Especially if I'm concentrating on, or preoccupied with, something else.

I probably would have figured it out faster and just started being pigheaded about it, though. Then made the joke of when she asked, "what does eYes mean?" I would have replied "the opposite of eNo."

Undocumented Immigrant Who Works in a Trump Hotel Speaks Out

artician says...

I don't think they're all here illegally any more. They probably got their citizenship sometime in the last decade that they've been here. I don't think he would have spoken out if his entire family risked being deported, but I'm pretty certain he'll lose his job there. From what it sounds like though, he's offering that up in exchange for spreading his message, so much respect for him.
He said he had two other jobs anyways. Good for him, and for anyone who speaks out against overwhelming ignorance.

bareboards2 said:

Well, frick. Now I am worried about him and his entire family. They are all here illegally, is that what he said? He is undocumented?

I applaud his bravery. I hope he doesn't pay a huge price for it.

Frick.
