(shamelessly ripped from wikipedia) "In her early career as a regular on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour of the late-1960s, French portrayed a somewhat spaced-out or ditzy hippie named Goldie O'Keefe. The character was originally introduced, in an ostensible studio-audience interview segment, as Goldie Keif; both "Goldie" and "Keif" were slang terms for marijuana at the time. Reportedly, the slight name change to O'Keefe when she became a semi-regular was at the television network's insistence. Her segment of the show was called "Share a Little Tea with Goldie." At the time, "sharing tea" was a popular euphemism for getting high on marijuana. Following suit, her segment consisted largely of "helpful" household advice loaded with sex and drug-related double entendres."

It was from the Glenn Campbell show in 1968, a summer replacement for the Smothers Brothers. The same show had a wonderful version of Sunshine of your love

The performance by The Who in 1967 was another defining moment in the series; as the group often did during that period, The Who destroyed their instruments at the conclusion of their performance of "My Generation", with the usual addition of mild explosives for light pyrotechnic effect. The piece would end with guitarist Pete Townshend grabbing Tommy's guitar and smashing it. On the Smothers Brothers show that night, a small amount of explosive was put into the small cannon that Keith Moon kept in his bass drum. But it didn't go off during the rehearsal. Unbeknownst to Moon, a stage hand had added another explosive before the taping, and later Moon added another charge so that now there were three explosive charges in the cannon instead of one.[9] When Moon detonated it, the explosion was so intense that a piece of cymbal shrapnel cut into Moon's arm; Moon is heard moaning in pain toward the end of the piece. Townshend, who had been in front of Moon's drums at the time, had his hair singed by the blast; he is seen putting out sparks in his hair before finishing the sketch with a visibly shocked Tommy Smothers. Allegedly, the blast contributed heavily to Townshend's long-term hearing loss.

Here's a companion posting, a nice clip of Nilsson on a Smothers Brothers Show. In this clip, he plays the song he wrote and *hoped* would be used for the movie. Schlesinger rejected it in favor of "Everybody's Talking" http://www.videosift.com/story.php?id=7542

Harry Nilsson's amazing voice remains one of the aural icons of the 60's and early 70's. He's sung a number of songs that are woven tightly into the cultural tapestry of that era.
I really enjoyed these few minutes with Harry. Years later, he and John Lennon would make headlines for being kicked out of a Smothers Brothers performance, where they were in the audience heckling Tommy and Dick.
