Buried in an Avalanche

ChaosEngine says...

So as a relative newcomer* to the backcountry, here's my $0.02:

They were incredibly lucky.

Going into a gully like that after a snow storm is a "terrain trap" where even a small slide can accumulate very deep snow. Getting buried under 2-3m is bad, but 10m+? Unless you have the world snow shoveling champion team in your party, you're dead.

Good on them for carrying shovels and probes, but where were their transceivers? The article states that the victim had his transceiver with him but the others didn't. A single transceiver is about as useful as a prick in a nunnery.

The only reason that guy is alive is he managed to stick his ski pole above the snow. Without that, by the time they find him, they're not rescuing him, they're recovering the body.

Most importantly, they knew it was a sketchy line and they went anyway (and altogether.... jesus.... spread the fuck out... no-one gonna rescue you if you're all buried).

Right there, that's the fatal mistake. I know guys who have hiked for 6 hours to get to a run, looked at it and turned back. If you're not sure, don't go. Even if it means climbing back out.

So to sum up:
unsure about conditions: don't go
the entire party doesn't have a shovel/probe/transceiver each: don't go
if you absolutely have to go: one at a time and aim for a safe spot

/sermon

I'm being a bit of a prick on this. It's really easy to criticise, but I've been there and I know that powder fever takes hold. But *nature hates you and wants to kill you. Keep that in mind.

* I've been side-country riding for a few years, but started splitboarding last year.

Buried in an Avalanche

AAAAAAAAAAAAA!!! NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-NO-!!! This is why I never backcountry skied.
EDIT: even though this was within boundaries, it was still the fear that kept me mostly on somewhat groomed/cleared slopes.
They found both those guys right away, and it still seemed like forever just digging out their heads. Yoinks!

Freestyle Ballet Skiing From 1984

That is Warren Miller narrating. He is the king of deadpan ski movie commentary. Steep and Deep is one of my all time favorites of his.

Vikersund 2015: Peter Prevc breaks world record, flies 250m

Xaielao says...

Lol not a chance in hell Norway was gonna let that record stand.

All that done at night too, I cant imagine flying down a hill at 60mph with only a pair of skis under me.. in near darkness.

How Measles Made a Comeback

MilkmanDan says...

As someone originally from Kansas, I don't usually get to claim any superiority to Colorado. They've got mountains, skiing, sports, ...legalized weed. We've got ... um ... wheat, corn, cows, and statistically-flatter-than-a-pancake status.

But now, at least I can say that my state has better vaccination rates! Damn Colorado mountain hippies.

Dude Where's My Car? Kitimat Gets 2 Meters of Snow in 2 Days

kceaton1 says...

If you have money then it can snow and snow and snow and your perfectly fine. Basically running warm water under the cement and also keeping an insulation area on your roof around 40 degrees or so... Of course this stuff isn't exactly available to your Average Joe...so...

Also, I don't think the piped water (though there is electric versions as well, but then you have to worry about extreme electric bills too, if I remember right) would work at all when you start to reach a certain sub-zero temperature unless you can REALLY turn the temperature up on them (and then these start to cost money via gas...).

Every so often you run into people that are super rich (or just make good use of their money and resources) and actually have this stuff installed (not just ski resorts or certain areas)... I forget how much it costs, but you can get it if you really, really get a lot every year and you're getting afraid about your house or something else getting ruined...

One Of Those Days 1 - POV skiing with Candide Thovex

One of Those Days 2 - Free Skiing with Candide Flovex

Esoog says...

I love snow skiing. To me, it is one of the most freeing activities I can ever do. Just gliding down a mountain, back and forth...OK. must find mountain immediately! But I can ski 8 hours in a day and never do anything remotely as cool as what I just watched.

The pinnacle was at the 2:35 mark in the video when he does a backflip, and there is what looks like an Eagle flying over his head. Awesome.

Tony Hawk Test Drives the Real Hoverboard

ChaosEngine says...

I'm not sure about the power inefficiencies, but I doubt anyone will be able to afford to cover their entire factory/skatepark with copper (? not sure what that surface is). Could be useful as tracked pathways, maybe.

Not sure why they're wearing skiing goggles?

Finally, Tony shows the problem with a hoverboard at the end. Skateboards, snowboards, skis, rollerskates, bikes....these are all controlled by changing your balance and altering the friction between the board and the ground. If you're not touching the ground... how the hell do you steer the damn thing?

Still cool though

As I understand it, they're really intended one day for moving heavy things around in an industrial setting. I'm sure it's massively power inefficient, but hell, it's cool.

Most insane ski line EVER!

newtboy says...

What do you mean 'you don't get a good look at the line'? you see it from the helicopter AND the skier's POV.
Look again at :10 and again at :15.
Oddly, I think I saw this video here a few weeks back, but I can't find it anywhere. Ski dude is *skillful (and nuts!)
EDIT: After looking again, it looks like this isn't the first run. There seem to be multiple tracks already in the canyon/chute.
Oh yeah, and might I suggest he save the whiskey for after?

Trancecoach said:

It's an impressive line, but not all that different from alpine in that a tight squeeze is managed by speed control. i think the fact you don't actually get a good look at the line helps create the sense of danger.

Still, not something you want to do without plenty of experience/confidence and maybe a shot of whiskey.
