Shawshank in a Minute

Anti-Cable (Pay TV) PSA from the 70's

Asmordean says...

"Discovery therefor pays Comcast a sum to have them broadcast their channel and all it's commercials."

That is not always the case. Right now in Canada a few channels are seeking the right to charge cable companies to air their station because they get them free right now. Cable companies are protesting against it.

Comcast, Shaw, Rogers, Verizon, etc usually make their money just off their subscribers while Discovery, TLC, Fox, etc make money off the commercials. Stations want to change that so they make money from commercials AND subscribers.

Uggh. The sooner that this little bullshit meme has passed through the bowels of the intarweb, the better off we'll all be.

I agree with your initial sentiment, but there will just be thousands more bullshit memes to follow it.

I found this great quote the other day which I just realized needs to be updated:

"If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas." - George Bernard Shaw

I propose adding the following: "...unless we have exchanged these ideas online, in which case neither of us will have any ideas. Also, people who have observed our exchange will no longer have any ideas."

Meant to downvote, choggie -- you are so shortsighted. You consistently mischaracterize and slur the good of various people of conscience. Is this because you've never actually met any?

The notion that other animals have rights should not be controversial in a civilized society. (Someone please point one out to me.)

On animal rights I think it was Shaw who said "the question is not whether they have the capacity to reason, but whether they have the capacity to suffer."

Saying that, I've not seen the clip and have formed no opinion.

Defining Vintage (Vintage Talk Post)

choggie says...

According to Webster’s the term classic, when used as adjective is defined as:

“1 a: serving as a standard of excellence : of recognized value b: TRADITIONAL, ENDURING c: characterized by simple tailored lines in fashion year after year ”.

Ok, “vintage”, which in its first form really refers most often specifically to the year when a certain wine was produced, but also has the following meanings:

“1 of wine: of, relating to, or produced in a particular vintage
2: of old, recognized, and enduring interest, importance, or quality : CLASSIC
3 a: dating from the past : OLD b: OUTMODED, OLD-FASHIONED
4: of the best and most characteristic -- used with a proper noun <vintage Shaw: a wise and winning comedy -- Time>”

Webster’s defines antique as:

”1: a relic or object of ancient times
2 a: a work of art, piece of furniture, or decorative object made at an earlier period and according to various customs laws at least 100 years ago b : a manufactured product (as an automobile) from an earlier period”,
or as an adjective:
“1: existing since or belonging to earlier times : ANCIENT <antique trade routes to the Orient>
2 a: being in the style or fashion of former times <antique manners and graces> b : made in or representative of the work of an earlier period <antique mirrors>; also : being an antique
3: selling or exhibiting antiques <an antique show>”

When you speak of a vintage automobile, vintage 1. A group or collection of people or things sharing certain characteristics. 2. A year or period of origin. 3. Length of existence; age. --vin·tage adj. 1. Of or relating to a vintage. 2. Characterized by excellence, maturity, and enduring appeal; classic. 3. Old or outmoded. 4.a. Of the best. b. Of the most distinctive.

There are no set of universally recognized criteria, cept for antiques....100 yrs or more-

Don Giovanni Is Sent to Hell: Commendatore Scene (powerful)

bluecliff says...

The Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard wrote a long essay in his book Enten/Eller (Either/Or) in which he argues that Mozart's Don Giovanni is the greatest work of art ever produced. The finale, in which Don Giovanni refuses to repent, has been a captivating philosophical and artistic topic for many writers including George Bernard Shaw, who in Man and Superman, parodied the opera (with explicit mention of the Mozart score for the finale scene between the Commendatore and Don Giovanni).

Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back alternate ending

Fletch says...

From Wiki: One of the controversies surrounding the 2004 DVD release of the film was that the "ghost" of Anakin was replaced by Hayden Christensen, though Shaw is still the one shown as Anakin/Vader in the scene when Vader is unmasked, and is the only actor credited with the role in that film. In 2006, another DVD release featured the original version of Return of the Jedi, with Shaw restored as the ghost of Anakin Skywalker.

I didn't realize they "put him back", so to speak.

Spiff says...

True, but at least we wouldn't have had to look at Hayden Christensen's smiling ghost at the end of the sixth. It's no better for poor ol' Sebastian Shaw, of course, but so it goes.

Uhhhhhhh... isn't that why you are able to delete a video? Look at the INTENTION, not the result. Lighten up. It makes me wonder how many entertaining videos at videosift are "cast out" when they are something that would be enjoyable to the public. Rules should always be reviewed to see if they stand up to the common opinion of the audience, not the rulemakers. Isn't that what democracy is about? Now, I know you just went, "psh-shaw", but that is the INTENT of common rule, not the way it is. Shouldn't that be what the internet is about?
