NHL to NBA in 3 minutes!

Metta World Peace decks James Harden with elbow

critical_d says...

If this happened anywhere outside of a "professional" sports arena...the dude would be arrested. Artest is a punk and the NBA should suspend him for the rest of this season (playoffs included) and all of next season. But the odds of that happening??? HAHA!

Tebow's AMAZING 80 yd TD to Win the 2012 AFC in OT

sixshot says...

I still won't buy into the Tebow hype. Dude can't throw even if his life depended on it. Too bad the playoff game against New England is on a Saturday... because it'd make another good writing material for another skit at SNL.

Tebow is sub-par compared to other QBs. Even Michael Vick on his 2nd year at the Atlanta Falcons played better than Tebow right now. What good is a team that depends on the QB to run the ball more times than necessary? Eventually that play style in how NFL is played will result in a major injury and Broncos are gonna be a mess again. (Then again, they've been a mess ever since they had Tebow as 3rd stringer.)

New England got this one handily. I just hope that NE's defense will beef up... shoddy defense really hurts.

Amazing Punt Fake for TD, Stupid Rule Takes It Back

MilkmanDan says...

Good sportsmanship is great, and a good thing to encourage. However, this rule doesn't punish "bad" sportsmanship, unless your standards for "bad" sportsmanship are so ridiculously hair-triggered that you'd prefer to watch all sports being played by Robots versus Vulcans.

It is possible to be a gracious winner and yet remain visibly happy that you won. What does any any Olympic athlete do after winning a race, landing a tough jump, setting a new record, or having any other momentary success? They give themselves a little fist-pump, grin like idiots, puff out their chest and hold their head high -- and that is probably the bare minimum for even the most stoic competitor ever. Is that bad sportsmanship? No.

What happens at the end of every World Series, Superbowl, or Championship of any sport ever played? One team jumps up and down in a mass hug, acting like schoolgirls and completely unashamed of doing so, while the other team has their arms at their sides and stares blank-faced at the ground 3 feet in front of their feet. Is that bad sportsmanship by the winners? No.

I love the tradition in NHL hockey where at the end of any playoff series, the entire roster of both teams lines up and shakes hands with every member of the opposing team. This can happen after 7 games fueled by hatred and bad blood, bench clearing brawls, or whatever. They put that aside, line up, shake hands, and congratulate each other on a well-fought series. Is that good sportsmanship? Yes!

Encouraging good sportsmanship makes sense. Coming up with punishments that can potentially alter the outcome of games for some behavior that is arbitrarily decided is "bad" sportsmanship is crazy.

Too Much Moneyball

Yep, goes to show how messed up MLB is. No salary cap means Yankees can just buy their World Series title. They did it in '09. I can only hope that Detroit will eliminate those Yankee bastards from the playoffs for 2011.

Hockey Game Violence not caught by referee

This resulted in a one game suspension for Jarret Stoll. After the Raffi Torres four game suspension (two regular season, and two playoff) I think this should have been at least two games and probably more.

Cup Raise

Beer Rip Off at Qwest Field - when is small really large?

bareboards2 says...

Qwest Field management responds to the video. Hmmm.....

"We received a copy of the YouTube video showing the quantity of liquid served in the 16 oz. beer cup is the same quantity that fits into the 20 oz. beer cup. This is the first time we have been alerted to this fact. Upon our internal investigation this afternoon, we discovered the cups that are marked 16 oz. hold 20 oz. of liquid. Fans who purchased a 16 oz. beer actually received 20 oz. of beer for the 16 oz. price. Fans that purchased the 20 oz. beer received the amount they purchased.

"We are working with Levy Restaurants to follow up with the cup vendor about the measurement and to determine how long this has been occurring at Qwest Field. We are determined to find a solution as quickly as possible. In the meantime, we will serve domestic beer in the 20 oz. cup at tomorrow's playoff game to ensure all fans receive the amount they purchase, and we will charge the 16 oz. price."

Guess who is the most hated person in Cleveland is

sixshot says...

I love the fact that they played the Imperial March theme from Star Wars when LeBron is called out.

What's sad is that... he not only lost that good image he built up but he also tarnished his reputation and his legacy as a Cav. Look at Magic Johnson, Jabaar, and the countless retired Celtics, and I can say that they all left their mark as a great player. They had integrity and they are very well respected. And they stayed with a single team. How many players can actually do that today in the NBA?

I lost all respect for LeBron since that announcement, and I am not even from Cleveland! Had he stayed at Cleveland, he would have cemented his legacy even more and would even give the new coach, one that they had needed for years, a better shot at the Finals. I hope Heats fail big time, in that they would not even win enough games to make the playoffs.

what kind of loser makes comments trying to blame victims and be apologist when she seems reasonable and recounting events in a non-sensational way for the media.

In no way was I blaming her or trying to downplay the seriousness of her claims, I was just pointing out that it was a POSSIBILITY that she was exaggerating to make the police and government seem like villains. Reading over the corroborations in the link from bananafone it seems that the claims weren't exaggerated, which is unacceptable on the part of the officers in question. My skepticism on what happened was drawn from the simple fact that I was not there. I have been in riots in Montreal, though nothing quite on the scale of this other than after a playoff hockey game, I have never seen nor heard of police acting in this way before in Canada. I still think that she wasn't "throttled" to the extent that she seems to imply though.

So, as I expected Denmark lost their first match against Holland 2-0. They didn't deserve to win with that performance though, but it was expected.
Much more surprising, Italy tied with Paraguay. I didn't see the match though, was it even? Lucky goals?

Paraguay was very defensive, and only scored with a set piece where Italy made a defensive error. On the other hand Italy dominated possesion and play, but hardly managed to initiate good attacks on the paraguayan goal. All in all the draw is deserved for both teams.

Denmark had some good phases during the game, even had the better chances during the end of the first half. Can't blame them for playing pretty defensively against an offensive powerhouse like Netherlands. I still see Denmark going through as the 2nd team in that group, which would mean they could be paired with Italy in the first playoff round

Pope Benedict tackled in Christmas Mass procession

The offensive line for the Vatican City Holy Sees is absolutely horrendous this year. First of all, the new quarterback has been in for a few years, yet he can't maneuver well outside of the pocket. He just stands there and waits to be sacked. Secondly, the guards can't take down a linebacker who's probably 5'5" and barely 100 pounds? That's just poor defensive skills. I don't know who to start blaming for this, but heads are gonna roll if this team can't get itself together before the playoffs.

France cheats its way into World Cup

HollywoodBob says...

What amazes me is that people still think that the winners of professional sporting events have anything to do with the skill of the players.

As soon as money is introduced, and it becomes entertainment, you should just expect the spirit of fair play and sportsmanship to go right out the window. The owners associations only care about putting more fans in the stands at the highest possible ticket price. The league controls the officiating, and the money controls the league. Every professional sport has their examples of how money ruins them: the NFL that welcomes felons with open arms, the NBA has referees betting on the outcomes of the games and then making calls to get those outcomes, baseball players juicing up on steroids so they can hit more homeruns, cyclists blood doping to get an edge, sporting leagues tweaking the seeding of playoffs to put particular teams in the finals, etc. ad nauseaum. These will all continue to become more and more prevalent until the fan outrage reaches critical mass and they stop buying tickets or watching matches on the telly. When the money goes away the ethics of the games will return. I'm not gonna hold my breath.
