How Steve Irwin Reacts to the Deadliest Snake in America

probie says...

My absolute favorite clip of Steve Irwin:
He's out in the Australian Outback and he starts showing the camera a non-venomous snake when he gets bit. He carries on for a bit, then suddenly looks into the camera and yells "Croiky!" and bolts over to his truck. He digs out a book from the glove box, thumbs through it rapidly, and with a sigh of relief says "Yep, non-venomous. For a second there, I thought I was holding a (snake name) and we're about 200 miles from the nearest hospital!"

Living Alone in the Wilderness for 40 Years

This looks really interesting but unfortunately, I'm gonna have to brush up on my Russian. No subs.

Really interesting read! It's amazing how flexible people can become in adapting to their surroundings. Chasing a deer through the the Siberian outback in the dead of Winter with no shoes? Daaayum.

i dont know where you were on the east coast but when i lived in brooklyn, walmart was trying to get in and the community came out everytime to protest.outback made it in and closed within a year because NO ONE went out to eat there.
i loved that about brooklyn.
you didnt go to some chain supermarket for your meats, you went to frank and sals.
you got the best bagels from the corner bakery (forgot the name) or if you wanted homemade tiramsau at 4am you headed to ferreros.
all family run businesses spent the money they made right back in to the community, unlike a corporate chain.

and for those talking about corporations and how great their service is?
pffft (fart noise)
heres a story for you kids concerning the altruism of corporations:
in the 90's there were hundreds of family produce businesses catering to local resturaunts.
nobody would buy from sysco(one the largest rest. supplier).so sysco got together with such companies as allied and usfoods and they literally cut their produce by half.
they sandbagged every family operation.
so when you had the price of a case of lettuce at 10-12 bucks from the family, sysco could get it for you for 6-7 bucks.
that was too sweet a deal for the local eateries and within a year those family businesses were DONE.
and lo and behold that 12$ case of lettuce jumped to 35$ when those families were no longer in the competition.
which of course affected everything from prices to quality.
the corporation has the resources and political might to crush any family run business which leaves us all with the tired vanilla cookie cutter sameness and a lame landscape of chain stores and strip malls.an un-originality that drains the soul and sucks all the color out of any kind of uniqueness that once was the family run business.
most people dont even notice until they find their neighborhood unrecognizable.
people never notice until it directly affects them and THEIR tiny little bubble of existence and THEN it becomes a federal case of persecution.

cry me a river you self-centered twat.

blankfist, your 45 minute ban wasn't because of favoritism. dag drew a line in the sand, which you immediately crossed. dag obviously doesn't like drawing lines in sand or disciplining people who call his bluff, which is why he is trying push that responsibility onto us. I too would rather see the admins take care of these kinds of issues rather than implementing some kind of complicated scheme, but dag doesn't want to be bothered with it, and it's his site, and I completely understand where he is coming from - he's got better things to do, like grilling shrimps on barbies, petting kangaroos and going on walkabouts in the outback.

If anything, favoritism works in your favor, since you are such an old and prominent member of the community. If a probie had dished out those ad homs, he'd probably be gone for good. Choggie is another example of favoritism. No one has abused the system more then he, and he's been banned dozens of times, yet he's allowed to stay because he is a colorful character who has become a fixture to this site.

If a system need be put in place, Genji's seems pretty smart. If it is abused, the admins can remove the offending sifters privileges.

Burning Steel Wool

spoco2 says...

A good survival tip I saw ages ago on a Malcom Douglas outback show said that you should always have steel wool in your car if you're driving in the outback. You can use it to easily start a fire by connecting some jumper leads (which you should have too if you're going out bush) to a piece of steel wool set in your campfire place and to the car battery. It produces a similar effect and gets a camp fire going easily.

Oh, sure, you could have matches, a lighter etc. in your car, but where's the fun in that? Plus the steel wool is also handy for cleaning battery contacts and many other things.

This is why I don't pass anybody on 1-lane-per-direction roads.

Vast majority of outback roads are going to be 1 lane. It's not difficult to pass traffic safely, if you're stuck behind a big truck, most will flick their indicator on when it's safe to pull out into the other lane. From the look of the car, it's probably a tourist/hire van. Lots of backpackers pick up those cars in the cities then go traveling about.
