Uh, it's just a cheesy gimmick. I don't think Outback even claims that their food is Australian, any more than the Rainforest Cafe claims their food is Amazonian.

This was classic! Hilarious that the creators have never been to Australia! That's just too good.
I've never found anything Australian about it, beyond the kitsch on the walls and the silly commercials.
I actually liked the bloomin' onion the first time I had it. These days I make it myself, and I think it's way better than going to outback. Beyond that one item, I've never thought anything I've eaten there was better than average, and often much worse....ribs included.

Oh yeah, there is a large population of feral camels in the outback, creating a bit of a problem. Imported during the 19th century for transport across the deserts.
