How Much Do You REALLY Know About Autism?

ulysses1904 says...

You may be right, no harm done. Other than me rolling my eyes because yet another person is suffering from “syndrome-itis”, and now they have a $10 word that magically elevates, explains and excuses their traits. It just strikes me as shallow and pretentious as someone who gets a Kanji tattoo without knowing shit about the culture.

Then again it may just me the Gemini in me. haha

Jinx said:

I hear ya. Similar thing with people who proudly announce they are OCD because they clean up.

but... is it hurting anybody? Is it such a bad thing that people apparently seek some sort of commonality with those on the spectrum where previously they might have tried to distance themselves from any comparison? That isn't rhetorical btw. I genuinely don't know whether that kind of appropriation is just annoying, or damaging, or even perhaps beneficial.

Louis CK Explains Where Nigger Originated to Patrice O'Neal

bobknight33 says...

Louis CK was just plane racist.
Patrice O'Neil was at least providing historic origin.

Many sifters just think wow that was funny and don't even acknowledge their own racist bias.

Oh it was just comedy. no harm done. really?

Awesome music: rhymes clips from the best of TV and film.

Lyrics from the YT page:

1,2,1,2,3,4
We accept her, one of us, we accept her, one of us!
Gooble gobble gooble gobble!
We accept her, we accept her!
We accept her, one of us, we accept her, one of us!
Gooble gobble gooble gobble!
We accept her, we accept her!

(We-we) we came, we saw, we kicked it's ass,
I was testing you - and you passed,
Dental plan! Lisa needs braces,
Be required to fart on a regular basis,
I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse,
Channel 13 - Eyewitness news!
Robocop, who is he?
Dead or alive you're coming with me.

In a hurry to be fed, beady eyes and big blue head.

I'm telling the truth Doc, you gotta believe me,
Why does everything I whip leave me?
My beautiful chocolate! Candy is dandy,
Fava beans and a nice Chianti,
You can count on Slippery Pete,
Suicide will be nice and neat!
I didn't build the Panama canal,
Open the pod bay doors please, HAL,

These aren't the droids you're looking for,
These aren't the droids we're looking for,
I am not a number I am a free man!
Rosebud.
To The Idiotmobile!
Right away Michael,
I-I-I-I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered.

We came, we saw, we kicked it's ass,
You don't understand I coulda had class,
Round and tasty on a bun,
Ooh Zippy look what you've done!
Finally! Cast off those lines!
No, I've been nervous lots of times,
Red Rum! What's the matter honey?
Just robbed Boss Hogg all of his money!

We came, saw, we kicked it's ass,
Writing checks your body can't cash,
I was elected to lead, not read,
I feel the need - the need for speed,
Watch out for snakes, a good man's loafer,
HQ - my hat looks like a muffin - over,
My god it's full of stars,
There was no driver in the car..

In the car (repeat)

Well you see I'm in hot pursuit!

There are only two things I love in this world - everybody and television!
#The Simpsons
#Run With Us!
Ugh - you must be shrooming,
Wait for me Moomin!
Cross live to meet the host of that show, Meat Boy,
I want to go to there.

We came, we saw, we kicked it's ass,
An oil tycoon - like a.. moustache,
Nice beaver! I just had it stuffed,
I don't give a shit, close enough,
Where's me washboard? I'll get me coat,
Y-y-y-you're gonna need a bigger boat,
What'd she say? I think she bought it,
Suck it monkeys! I'm goin' corporate!
C'mon let's take a drive! A drive?
Number 5 is alive!
It's only a laugh, no harm done,
Pickles, french fries, yum yum yum,
Bueller, Bueller, Bueller,
It's 2 degrees cooler,
The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long,
Six words in the whole song.

We-we-we accept her, one of us, we accept her, one of us!
Gooble gobble gooble gobble!
We accept her, we accept her!
You are number 6 5 4 3 2
I am not a number, I am a free man

We came, we saw, we kicked it's ass,
Give me my 20,000 in cash,
We came, we saw, we kicked it's ass,
I think you woke up the dead with that blast
We came, we saw, we kicked it's ass,
I think fast, I talk fast,
We came, we saw, we kicked it's ass,
Lois, this is not my Batman glass,

The REAL Reason You're Circumcised

Sagemind says...

To say, "see, no harm done" is like cutting off your baby toes at birth. you never had them, so you never missed them. But the toes are still missing. Why? because someone thought it would be a good idea.

Now, the foreskin isn't being removed for no reason at all, it's being removed because someone with power had really-sick, messed-up, uneducated attitudes towards sex. Then they wanted to control everyone else's attitudes towards sexuality. So they came up with this sadistic surgery to stop teenage boys from masturbating. The thing is, this is all in the name of religion as well.

So, regardless if you feel like you've lost nothing in the process, you are continuing the mutilation in the name of one or two people's interpretation of religious beliefs and purposefully hacking off pieces of new born babies.

I have no idea how anyone can think, oh, ya, well, they did it to me so... I must do it to all my children.
That is just messed up....

OK, seems, I have a strong opinion on this.. I'll disengage now

Is Heroin Worse For Someone's Health Than Marijuana?

scheherazade says...

Problem is this...

Every drug, used IN MODERATION so as to not be harmful, is [by definition] harmless.

You can't answer a "more/less harmful" question in absolute terms, because individual usage patterns will determine the specific 'harm/danger' posed by each substance.

There is no "standard dosage and regiment + standard metabolism + standard body weight" that you can use to compare substances.
You can pick such numbers, but you'd be pulling them out of your butt.

It's obvious she's giving the stock answer that aligns with her agency's official stance. But even if she were to give a "scientific" response, it would not be black and white.

The answer would be "it depends".
"How much Heroine? How much Coke? How regularly used? etc".

This isn't TV. Just like IRL car crashes rarely result in explosions, IRL drug use rarely results in tragedy.

The simplest example is prescription pain killers. Literally variations on heroine. People are given them for broken ribs, etc. They take them for a while, and then they're done. No harm done.
They could have taken heroine in stead, in the same effective dosage and frequency, and had literally the same experience.

Yes, I do think there would be very little causing people not to vote for dupe. If it's eventually found to be a dupe - the votes are transferred, so no harm done. >> ^xxovercastxx:
>> ^Psychologic:
The problem is that calling it a dupe without any confirmation makes some people less likely to vote for the video even if it isn't really a duplicate post.

I have a hard time believing that. There are no downsides to voting for a dupe, why would people not vote?

People who know the system, sure. Newer members might just decide to skip it.

I didn't take a poll so I can't say it has a huge (or any real) effect on voting... I'm just basing it on my initial reaction to seeing it.

It also isn't a knock on any individual. I've had the urge to say "I think this has been posted before" on a video, but felt it would be kinda lazy of me to make such an assertion without at least confirming it first.

Anyway, liked the video. Upvote for tops made of tubes. "Wtf?"

Peace Activist Quotes Constitution to FBI Agents

GeeSussFreeK says...

My dad has her beat. He put up a "Vote for Bush" (read my lips bush) on his balcony when Clinton was running...just to be silly. He got a visit from the secret service. They showed up as his door, and asked him some questions. One of which, was "Do you have plans to overthrow the United States Government?" to which his replay was *slightly long pause*..."Well, not yet!". As you can imagine, this response elicited a longer conversation. After they figured out he was just a silly old rabbler rouser, they left. There are always going to be these slight kind of run-ins when you have peoples who are free and also have an additional set of people tasked with keeping people "safe".

There was no harm done here either way in the end, the lady didn't get arrested for doing nothing wrong, and she wasn't overly rude beyond what an annoyed person should be for being questioned like this (it is scary, it is the FBI...on your doorstep, fucken scary). But I still find more problem with her being even questioned more than I have a problem with how she acted. Seemingly, the whole point of this contact wasn't for "investigation", but to either scare her into a recourse of action that she would regret, or to admit to something they could pin her with to arrest her. They questions were so vague, and the aim of their investigation so ambiguous, you can tell this was just them setting up land mines for her to crash into. She avoided them mostly, and perhaps not as nicely as they were setting them up for her to fall into, but someone being nice as they investigate you for crimes they want to charge you with doesn't necessarily put you in a good mood. It is like wishing someone a good day as you fire shots above their head. They were doing a hard job, yes. But was it a job worth doing, debatable. I think her response was in line with that debate. Not a hero, just a person doing the best they could.

This is indeed a dupe. Rats. I am going to wait to isdupe it, though, if folks don't mind. Since so many people missed it the first time.

No harm done to wait -- all the votes will be transferred to the original, and if we wait, they will actually get more.

It is a good vid, isn't it? Except for that blue food thing.

I agree with this. We shouldn't be afraid to ban people, but we can also exercise judgement on what's best for the Sift and show mercy. So both of you are right - in the end, no harm done as I've reinstated, and he/she got the message.

In reply to this comment by eric3579:
I see them more as guidelines then rules. I try and make decisions based on what's in the sifts best interest.
This person wanted to be a legitimate member, as could be seen by the message they left. The rules are not black and white. Anyway it's not that big a deal. I just wanted to let you know that you can use your own discretion when it comes to the rules.

RULES IS RULES GUY. Why have rules if they are not enforced. first thing that popped into my head is overcasts snuff post... slippery slope I tell ya, slippery slope.

In reply to this comment by eric3579:
Yes,you are. Just a bit. We would rather not ban people if they see they have made a mistake, and are willing to correct it.

How to annoy the police and get the biggest possible ticket

MilkmanDan says...

Um... I'm confused. It looks like they were intentionally trying to get pulled over by this guy so they could record it. If that is the case, they didn't have a very cunning plan considering the "expired proof of insurance ticket".

So the case they would make against the officer goes as follows:

A) He reached in and tried to grab the phone. I'll agree that this action was wrong and he clearly shouldn't have done it. However, there was no harm done to the phone or the owner, so as mistakes go I can think of much worse things that he could have done. Worth the officer getting a warning over, but that can be the end of it.

B) He told them to turn off the recording. He has no legal right to require them to do so, and when asked to clarify or justify that he didn't back it up and basically gave up on it. I'm sure they feel vindicated in catching him "abusing his power" and "not having a leg to stand on", but I'd say more important is that he did in fact back down from it. Again a mistake, but I find it hard to be extremely critical. Let the officer learn from it and move on.

C) He was on a "power trip", and "wasting tax dollars". ...Right. Perhaps if one believes that "following to close behind a vehicle" or "driving with expired proof of insurance" should not be ticket-worthy offenses.

I fully agree that as people in a position of some power, police should be held to very high standards of conduct. This, however, didn't really trigger my "abuse of power" alarm.

Laughing Gas is funny.... very funny

rottenseed says...

>> ^unpopp:
The only time we ever had any trouble was when a mate was laughing so hard he smacked his head against the concrete wall he was sitting against. No harm done...I think.

Replacing the mixture of gases that makes up air with another gas (other than oxygen) does do harm. Maybe not in the short term but depriving your brain of oxygen is generally a bad thing.
