Real Time with Bill Maher - Racism in America

Kerotan says...

No lumping of racists was done.
I suggested that as a member of a group you can be complicit in racist attitudes (ever made a remark about asian's being good at math for example?)
It can be incredibly subtle, I'll admit I've done that sort of micro aggression shit before, I'm no angel.
As per my last response, if you are more upset by the phrase "white people often treat black people badly" because it implies that as a white person, you might often treat black people badly then I've got great news, you aren't a racist! But you do seem to care more about implicit, quite general remarks to your character than actual racial injustice, (ie: job discrimination and police brutality on the basis on skin colour) which might be food for thought.

Stormsinger said:

You can lump me in with the racists when, and only when, you see me doing something racist. My skin color does not qualify.

If you're attacking racism by being racist, your problem is clearly not racism. Your problem is being the target of racism...apparently it's fine if the target is someone else.

Richard Feynman on helping the Manhattan Project

longde says...

I greatly admire Feynman, but on balance he did knowingly help to develop what was at the time the most powerful, most deadly weapon in history. All you guys who dismiss this because he made some great contributions to science need to think through the ethics some more. I'm sure there were Nazi scientists who made some great contributions as well.

Germans were great physicists; I sure there were some nobel laurettes working for Hitler. Am I supposed to dismiss a hypothetical Nazi Physicist's very efficient gas chamber design because he made some otherwise great scientific contributions? I am an admirer of german engineers, yet I can't bring myself to dismiss the way they used that talent to mechanize genocide.

Feyman is no angel, or a dark angel at best.

If I believed in hell, I would believe Feynman, despite his laudable scientific contributions, would burn in it. I'm sure there are alot of Japanese non-combatants that wouldn't mind.

Capitalist Holiday Brings Out Best In Humanity

thinker247 says...

I was with you on the first two sentences. It's not capitalism that causes trampling of fellow humans for a deal on electronics. It's primal urge and a little too much enthusiasm.

But after that, you lost me (as usual.) How is morality brought into this? If we all went to church on Sunday and paid our taxes on time and tipped our hats to passing lady folk, would that prevent the actions of this video?

And by the way, we don't all believe that all values are equally valid. Murder would always be wrong to me, even if every blue-blood Democrat told me it was okay. I also try not to judge people before judging myself, but not because a deity told me this in a book. A good idea is a good idea, regardless of who started it.

I'd like to create a world in which everyone gets along, no matter what the voices in their head and in their literature tell them.

May Dog bless you this fine Kwanzaa season, QM.

I fail to see how this is 'capitalism's' fault.
What you're really lamenting is the breakdown of the civil society. That's that thing that says, "This value/trait/behavior is more desirable than selfish savagery."
Remember, 'you' voted to end the reign of the civil society when you agreed with the lying vermin that told you, "There are no moral absolutes. All values are equally valid."
Now 'you' don't have anything to bring out the best in humanity. There is no God and there are no angels, and therefore no "angels of our better nature".
Welcome to the world 'you' helped create.

There are no moral absolutes, but all values are certainly not equally valid.

God is the worst in humanity personified.

Oh, I see, this is Obama's fault, and the fault of everyone who voted for him.

Is this Bush's fault?

What about this?

Can we blame you for those incidents as well?>> ^quantumushroom:

Pornography Myths (Femme Talk Post)

Farhad2000 says...

In the meantime, try not to support the destruction of humanity's moral fabric too much.

Seriously?

Your comments tell me that you haven't really listened to a the people have been saying in the Dita and Femma threads. I think you just possess what all religious people possess, a conviction that others are living their lives in a improper fashion that you find immoral, you don't like it so you seek to change it.

Porn, murder, rape, pedophilia, violence, sexual abuse, drug use, alcohol abuse, war. None of that will ever change, because we are human beings are creatures of chaos born within a system of chaos. There are no angels, there are no demons. There is just people.

Buddy Holly - The Day The Music Died- American Pie

eric3579 says...

Verse 1
A long long time ago
I can still remember how that music used to make me smile
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And maybe they'd be happy for a while
But February made me shiver
With every paper I'd deliver
Bad news on the doorstep
I couldn't take one more step
I can't remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died

So, bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my chevy to the levee
But the levee was dry
And them good old boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day that I die
This'll be the day that I die

Verse 2
Did you write the Book of Love
And do you have faith in God above
If the Bible tells you so
Do you believe in rock n' roll
Can music save your mortal soul
And can you teach me how to dance real slow
Well, I know that you're in love with him
'Cause I saw you dancin' in the gym
You both kicked off your shoes
Man, I dig those rhythm & blues
I was a lonely, teenage broncin' buck
With a pink carnation and a pickup truck
But I knew I was out of luck
The day the music died
I started singin'

Verse 3
Now for ten years we've been on our own
And moss grows fat on a rollin' stone
But that's not how it used to be
When the Jester sang for the King and Queen
In a coat he borrowed from James Dean
In a voice that came from you and me
Oh, and while the King was looking down
The Jester stole his thorny crown
The courtroom was adjourned
No verdict was returned
And while Lenin read a book on Marx
The quartet practiced in the park
And we sang dirges in the dark
The day the music died
We were singin'

Verse 4
Helter Skelter in a summer swelter
The birds flew off with a fallout shelter
Eight miles high and falling fast
It landed foul on the grass
The players tried for a forward pass
With the Jester on the sidelines in a cast
Now the half-time air was sweet perfume
While the Sergeants played a marching tune
We all got up to dance
Oh but we never got the chance
'Cause the players tried to take the field
The marching band refused to yield
Do you recall what was revealed
The day the music died
We started singing

Verse 5
Oh, and there we were, all in one place
A generation lost in space
With no time left to start again
So come on, Jack, be nimble, Jack be quick
Jack Flash sat on a candlestick
'Cause fire is the devils only friend
Oh, and as I watched him on the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
No angel born in Hell
Could break that Satan's spell
And as flames climbed high into the night
To light the sacrificial rite
I saw Satan laughing with delight
The day the music died
He was singing

Verse 6
I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
I went down to the sacred store
Where I'd heard the music years before
But the man there said the music wouldn't play

And in the streets the children screamed
The lovers cried, and the poets dreamed
But not a word was spoken
The church bells all were broken
And the three men I admire most
The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the music died
And they were singin'

Bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my chevy to the levy
But the levy was dry
And them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this'll be the day that I die

They were singin'
Bye-bye, Miss American Pie
Drove my chevy to the levy
But the levy was dry
And them good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye
Singing this'll be the day that I die

We Don’t Have Homosexuals Like In Your Country

rougy says...

Columbia University was right to let him speak there, and the people who were against it should realize there can be no dialogue when only one side is heard.

Enzoblue brought up some good points - I'm curious to hear what Juan Cole has to say about it.

Regarding Hugo Chavez - maybe he's no angel, true, but he's a damned sight better than the crooks and liars they had in there before, the ones who are still there manipulating the media (like here in the USA), the rich who will never be rich enough and who want to privatize everything.

The Price is Right -- Cheaters Prosper

deathcow says...

Great to see this after so many years since I last watched it. It's been probably 25 years now since I would get home from elementary school and it would be on. The sounds of the show, and the voices of Bob handing off back and forth with his announcer are a real trip to hear again.

I remember thinking one of Bobs helper girls was a real hottie to my 6th grade brain. Looking at them all: http://www.tpir.tv/models/models.htm I recall it was Dian for a couple big reasons. I remember Bob liked her too.. she had a wardrobe malfunction one show that was making her fall out of her top, and Bob was suspiciously dropping the price tags on the floor in front of her a few times to make the most of it. He was no angel!
