Versengold - Frühlingsgruß (German Folk)

Lilithia says...

Raping and eating children? What do you think of German folk musicians?! He's just singing about picking flowers, of course.

newtboy said:

He's got a nice, calming voice. He managed to make German sound less than harsh.
This needs a translation. Those of us that don't speak German have no idea, he might be singing about raping children and eating them. I just can't vote either way until I know. ;-)

Prince - Let's go Crazy (Live 2007)

moonsammy says...

I've been trying to find a high def version of the entire 2007 halftime performance (of which this is the first part) and have failed. Aside from being an astounding musician and performer, he was ludicrously skilled at getting recordings of his material removed from the internet.

Florida Governor Rick Scott Gets Served

NOX says...

But musicians or movie stars aren't the ones cutting your health care while politicians are personally responsible for things that affect your everyday life.

To me, it's the same as a musician or movie star being able to walk down the street without being harassed for autographs or selfies.

Florida Governor Rick Scott Gets Served

ChaosEngine says...

Yeah, that's a fair point from both you and @eric3579.

I'm just not entirely comfortable with the concept that any public figure is 100% available just because they happen to be in public.

To me, it's the same as a musician or movie star being able to walk down the street without being harassed for autographs or selfies.

Mordhaus said:

I would say that, as Governor, if he is out mingling with the public it is in an official capacity. He has guards, lackeys, and others that could have ran in and got the coffee if he didn't want to be exposed to praise (or criticism).

It may also have been the only venue available, ever, to that lady to say something to him. She could have protested outside his offices or complained via email, but those things are easily ignored. Now if she had thrown something or attacked him, I would say it wasn't appropriate.

Woman Accuses White Male of Stealing Her Cultural Hairstyle

Babymech says...

No, it's just a very poorly implemented idea in today's culture. Cultural appropriation is real, but it's not just a question of copying someone else's style. There's obviously a problem when, for example, enormously talented black musicians develop new music styles and cultural expressions which are dismissed and marginalized until a white person takes after their styles and makes it acceptable to like them. If white people are given all the credit for jazz or soul or rock or blues or rap, it diminishes the rightful cultural accomplishments of some amazing musical pioneers. That's cultural appropriation because the powerful are unfairly appropriating all the benefits of the less powerful, original creators. If some 15-year old white girl wants to call herself a ratched ho and wear dreads, on the other hand, that's not appropriation, it's admiration. The problem arises when well-intentioned people forget to consider the power dynamic, and instead just translate 'cultural appropriation' into a series of racially permitted dress codes. Which is what the bully in the video was doing.

gorillaman said:

Cultural appropriation has to be the most moronic idea to gain traction in all of human history. Big claim, I know, but consider this: Culture IS appropriation. If other people don't pick up on your ideas and make use of them, then you DON'T HAVE A CULTURE; that's how it spreads; that's the only way it can EXIST. It's also, hey, fundamental to our success as a species. Better put a stop to it then.

CA is literally a null concept. It's like accusing a mathematician of 'cumulative addition'.

great gig in the sky-fantastic pink floyd cover

diggum317 says...

I agree. While I enjoy covers, I also enjoy hearing what the musicians who are performing the cover bring to the song...their own unique style that adds to the original, making it "new".

On one hand, that is an amazingly faithful cover. By god, that girl's got one hell of a voice.

My only criticism is that it's TOO similar. It sounds so much like the original that you may as well just listen to that.

Japanese Girl Is A Better Drummer Than You

ulysses1904 says...

My first instrument was the drums and I would rather listen to my neighbor's dog bark all day then hear most drum solos. She's competent and has done her homework but it's still as formulaic and predictable as most drum solos are.

Now THIS is a drum solo, Dennis Davis was Bowie's drummer for a number of years and I still crank this 8 minute solo 40 years after it was recorded in 1976. I have yet to hear any musician top this solo on any instrument, for my money.

Japanese Girl Is A Better Drummer Than You

ChaosEngine says...

Talent will get you so far.
So will hard work and practice.

Want to be great? you need both.

Talent is meaningless without the dedication to build on it. Likewise (sadly) you can practice til you bleed, but you'll never overcome your innate lack of ability (I know, I've tried).

This girl clearly has both. Now, she just needs to dial it back a notch on the fills and let her groove show. Remember, the musicians serve the song, not the other way round.

The Last Audio Cassette Factory

Sagemind says...

Absolute worst part about MP3s is the death of the album.
You can't just sit down and listen to the album any more.
Everything is about the Single. A musician's music is best understood as a whole piece not just a sectional.
To this end, new songs being released these days are all about the short 3 minute song and leaves the listening experience behind.
I miss the album, the B-side, and the other songs that came with that one single.

The Trooper Believer

poolcleaner says...

This clip from Spinal Tap is apropos, because it's a lampoon of the Monkees video, but they were also lampooning Maiden, Sabbath, Priest, Saxon, Randy Rhoads, Ian Gillan, etc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-BYzaDwNoE

This is an interesting interview with Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, because it addresses a rumor that they had walked out of Spinal Tap because they believed the band was making fun of them (which was untrue): http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/moslive/article-1022475/He-aint-heavy-hes-captain----Iron-Maiden-rocker.html

It's important to note that the members of Spinal Tap were all musicians and played their own music from the get go, whereas the Monkees only recorded their vocals and had other people play the instruments. Of course, in time the Monkees learned to play, even if there was so much wasted recording time they had to bring in other musicians to fill in. They eventually improved enough to play live shows with their own instrument play.

I gotta do my best to defend the Monkees, Iron Maiden, and Spinal Tap, because they ARE all great acts and entertainers. I say ARE because, as of 2016, The Monkees, Iron Maiden, AND Spinal Tap are all touring to this day. Not together, of course. That would be too awesome.

Big Think: John Cleese on Being Offended

poolcleaner says...

I think the problem is more a general attitude of PC nonsense like making a crusade out of people dressing up like people of other races for halloween. Well, I guess that means only people from fuckin Transylvania can dress up like Dracula and tell the black girl she can't be Cinderella -- that's fucked up. And that's what's generally fucking wrong with PC: it's just one sided shit. I come from a family with a long line of racist beliefs so I can tell you there is a HUGE difference between edgy behavior and actual racism. And people should know the difference.

I can just tell when a conversation is going to be a quick hello and goodbye when it's impossible to speak my mind. I can just walk away without offending someone, a comedian cannot. Praise Elune I only spend time with pot smoking trannies, angry gamers and booze guzzling musicians. I would probably murder myself before it ever got close to 1984. You can take my life but I'm taking my good genes with me and the Chosen One will never be born.

Imagoamin said:

Comedians who thrive on being edgy and pushing those boundaries, yet get upset that sometimes people get offended by that pushing are way more annoying IMO.

"PC" isn't anyone stopping you from telling your edgy joke. But your jokes would no longer be edgy if everyone stopped giving a fuck or occasionally pushing back. You'd just be another Jeff Dunham, even if you see yourself as Bill Hicks.

Tell your edgy jokes, realize people will push back, and say "Oh, good. I'm not some boring nobody." rather than get way more offended at their "offense".
