Standerd music Vidoes (Sift Talk Post)

I agree that it would be all or nothing, since people's tastes differ on what qualifies a quality vs "pop" song. Obviously, this would destroy the RnR collective.

I'm voting for keeping the music vids, as I think a policy of allowing things rather than disallowing them makes more sense. There are a LOT of videos here that I don't care for, but I don't mind sifting through them to find the stuff I like. If everyone cut out one thing from the sift, we wouldn't have anything left! I know there's plenty of people who are tired of all the kitty videos, some people don't like sports, some probably won't ever watch a "long" video. But everyone deals with everyone else's tastes, and I think that is really the power of the sift. Maybe we should crack down and define tagging a little better, so that it's easier to filter what you don't want. Like any music video should only have the music tag or something.

Joe, you sure you shouldn't go ahead and filter the cute stuff out? Sounds like you aren't a fan.

There is something so wrong about this trend. This is like the third of these group song videos I've seen from net-lebrities. It is so bizarre we have PR firms now hiring Numa Numa guys to do music vids for BNL.. Man that SWK really screwed up. He could be rich and famous by now.. milking his 5 mins like that sad, sad Numa Numa "I-reek-of-Subway-Jerrod-desperation' guy.

There's a good payoff at the end: watch what happens a few seconds after 1:15 - that might have clinched it for this guy.

I was tempted to make a blog post about this (and if this video does poorly - I'd say 50-50 odds, I just might send it there for that purpose), but I thought it was interesting to note that Toronto radio station 102.1 The Edge (CFNY) has yet another contest on their morning show (typical obnoxious morning show thing) - as long as listeners/contestants put the Edge 102.1 the logo somewhere in the vid (this one's just at the end), anything qualifies. Whatever the hosts enjoy most wins the $1000 weekly prize. There's a final grand prize of $5000. Technically anyone on Videosift can participate too.

Check out their contest site for details.

Returning to the topic of this video (the week two winner), they chose it for various reasons, not limited to the fact that the juxtaposition of "Afternoon Delight" with a 'vicious' beating was amusing, and that the guy managed to keep that cigarette in his mouth throughout the entire 'fight'. And he was doing it on a snowy deck too.

What I also found interesting was that overt "viral vids" - like this music vid - didn't win. I'd argue that inserting the station promo and logo repeatedly into the vid definitely hurt it. Sort of refreshing to see the "make free ads for us" aspect minimized, in favour of something more, I dunno, original? Or at least minimally commercial

Another phenomenon, I found while going through a few of the vids is that there are people with accomplished vids (say, a funny re-cut of a movie), who spliced in a 2 second clip of the station logo and then entered the contest. Worth a shot at free cash I suppose - would it be considered selling out though?

according to recent posts, the title of the track should be included in a 'music' vid. i didn't see much in the way of political images per se, but i guess it could be argued such. enjoyed it tho.

How do you watch videos on VideoSift? (Sift Talk Post)

Krupo says...

LOL, TVs are funny. We got a big screen last winter which I'm tempted to hook up to my system... except it's downstairs, so that's not happening.

I have a nice 17" NEC LCD but after playing with my work laptop at home this weekend I've fallen in love with the idea of using two monitors at the same time - it is so cool to have vids on one monitor and some other items on the other...

I usually open up a bunch of vids in tabs, and go through them in some order, and sometimes open up another window to read items while watching/listening to the music vids.

Emily Haines FTW!!!!

Beginning of the End for Videosift (Sift Talk Post)

joedirt says...

I think there is some valid points in this rant. I do feel VS queue has much more crap than normal. And even what does and doesn't make front page is lower than normal quality.

As I have been repeatedly saying, it's about categories and increasing the signal to noise ratio. If there was a queue for music vids, then quality music vids would make the front page, and people wouldn't mind slogging through the queue. If there was a tv show queue, etc. etc.

At some point this site does not scale, especially with the number of active queue surfers we currently have. Technically if there was 100 more queue surfer than nearly everything would make front page. If there was 100 more new users, then we would be swamped with too many queued videos to even get any of them out of the queue.

Some Music Video Love For Joedirt ;-)
