The Monkees - Daydream Believer
Marge: [voice over] The kids at school were even worse.
[young Marge gets on the bus, sits next to a girl]
Girl: [seeing her lunch pail] Ew! You like the Monkees? You know
they don't write their own songs.
Marge: They do so!
Girl: They don't even play their own instruments.
Marge: No...no!
Girl: That's not even Michael Nesmith's real hat.
Marge: Aah!

The Monkees - Daydream Believer
I beg to differ on the instrument playing...a quick check with wikipedia and at least two of them are well able to:
"Texan Michael Nesmith was a songwriter and guitarist who had recorded for Colpix under the name "Michael Blessing." He was the only Monkee who had come in to audition from seeing the original advertisement.
Peter Tork was recommended to Rafelson and Schneider by friend Stephen Stills.[2] Tork, a skilled multi-instrumentalist, had performed at various Greenwich Village folk clubs before moving west, where he was a dishwasher before becoming a Monkee.[2]"

Classic 90s? Try classic 60s. This is based on an old Monkees tune, "Zilch."
Theme song to the Monkees TV show.
Oof, I didn't see it in reruns either. I'm so old my piles have piles.
Damn I loved the Monkees-- I guess I liked being 5, though.
Theme song to the Monkees TV show.
I loved the Monkees! Except I didn't see it in reruns.
Michael Nesmith - Crusin' with Lucy, Ramona & Sunset Sam
Son of Bette Nesmith Graham, the inventor of Liquid Paper. Former Monkees member Michael Nesmith, inherited the $50+ million estate of Liquid Paper upon her death. Exploring the world of video production further, he created a television program called Pop Clips for the Nickelodeon cable network. The concept was sold to Time Warner/Amex, who developed it into the MTV network. He was the executive producer for the movie Repo Man.
Green Day: American Idiot (Playing Live 8 Concert in Berlin)
At least they wrote their own songs and played their own instruments, unlike the Monkees...
how to create a sexy pop star
I tend to think that that girl can actually sing and was deliberately sounding off key, since you can hear the vibrato applied at the end of some of the notes.
Of course, the point is certainly made, regardless... Though it was pretty obvious this sort of thing is going on. Look at the Britney Spears or Janet Jackson concerts where they're jumping around all over the place. You'd need vocal assistance there, no matter who you are.
It's not like this is breaking news either, as far as lyrics go. Look at the The Monkees...
The Monkee Beatles - Paperback Believer
Eh, the Monkees were a fabricated group of talented musicians. Their biggest songs were well-written, and they did record some of their own work, which is well-regarded by some.
The Monkee Beatles - Paperback Believer
Monkees have a couple nice songs... but overall they're a totally fabricated group. The Beatles are the best bad ever, and the most influential one as well. The Monkees were an american Beatles-wanna be band, trying to ride the Beatle mania wave
The Monkee Beatles - Paperback Believer
I still prefer the Monkees to the Beatles. Sue me.
Monkees: "Do I Have to Do This All Over Again?" from HEAD
In 1968, The Monkees put out a Psychedelic stream-of-conciousness movie called HEAD. It was written by then, Jack Nicholson, and Bob Rafelson. Predictably, it was a box-office flop, as their teenage fans were expecting more bubblegum. Instead, they got a demented, fairly subvursive,a dn quite dark film. Their careers were damaged pretty severly by it.
This is a fairly non-poppy acid-rock song from it, featuring a sequence of a Merry Pranksters style Acid Test party.

The Monkees - Cuddly Toy
I firmly believe the non-Monkee deserves a cute tag. The question is, do any of the Monkees deserve a cute tag to make the posting as a whole deserve one?
