10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman

ChaosEngine says...

Did you miss the part where I quoted trance saying she should wear earbuds?

Also please quote the part where I said "there should be stricter limits on their speech". For what seems like the 7 millionth time, freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences of speech. These guys are free to make comments on her ass or whatever, and I am free to call them misogynist assholes for doing so.

And this whole thing about class and race is a bullshit smokescreen, by men desperate to paint this as anything other than what it clearly is.

Here's Jessica Williams talking about being harassed by "wall street douches". So that's a black woman being harrassed by rich white guys.

Still think it's about how "dark skinned men might rape your white woman"?

Meanwhile, tranceidiot is desperately trying to somehow make this about his retarded libertarian agenda.

Nobody is saying she needs to wear earbuds. She's welcome to tolerate assholes. You seem to be saying there should be stricter limits on their speech.

To me this video suggests a reverse power dynamic. It's about telling lower class folk to be comfortable being ignored by the privileged class. It's about telling them to only speak when spoken to. They should know their place.

It feels like Willie Horton ads all over again. It seeks to instill fear that dark skinned men might rape your white woman at a moments notice. That southern strategy, it gets you eyeballs.

Fuck #gamergate (Videogames Talk Post)

gorillaman says...

Anita Sarkeesian is the one who got what she wanted. Her actual job is to cry victimhood and harness the outrage it generates among her supporters to trick them into paying her to produce things of no value. She made a career out of becoming one of the damsels in distress she complains about. She's quite happy, of course, to exploit the same trick to confuse gullible morons into believing that all her critics are 'misogynist neanderthals'.

Fuck #gamergate (Videogames Talk Post)

ChaosEngine says...

@VoodooV yeah, gamergate pissed me off. It should piss you off too, unless you like being lumped in with a bunch of misogynist neanderthals. They are making it an embarrassment to be called a gamer.

Here's a link (which I meant to post in my original rant.. apologies)
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/10/15/sarkeesian-utah/

@speechless, this goes way beyond your average internet trolling. There have been specific threats made against people, including posting their addresses on twitter and then saying "I know where you live and I'm coming to get you" etc.

The worst part is that story from the link. This asshole threatened "the worst school shooting in American history" and he got what he wanted.

@gorillaman, you're either an idiot or you're trying to be funny. Either way, you fail.

Oh, and just in case anyone brings up the "ethics in games journalism" thing... even if gamergate ever was about that (which I don't believe for a second), it's certainly not now, and supporting it is akin to supporting the Nazis because of their stellar public transport....

racist, misogynistic, and trolling all in one post.

so very efficient.

What a bitch, know-it-all lawyer. She's obviously anti-cop. How does she know what the police are doing? She just jumps right in the middle of things, assuming she knows what a burglary suspect looks like, that the police are 'acting stupidly' gee where have I heard that before? She must takes her cues from the Duffer-in-chief.

She asked where the call came from...it came from another neighborhood. Does she know what time the burglary occurred? A person could come home, find a break-in, walk to the neighbor and say, hey did you see anyone? Yeah, i saw a black guy in front of your house 15 minutes ago. A person can walk quite a distance in 15 minutes.

I also didn't see the cops even touch this guy. Also, both officers appeared to be black, so they can't be racist, right? Only white cops are racist.

Yeah, this wonderful lady hates cops.

Tormenting girlfriend with Lord of the Rings quotes

Sagemind says...

Okay, maybe not Sexist, but then it's either Misogynist or someone has an incredibly low sense of self esteem and doesn't understand how a guy could possible have a relationship with a pretty woman.

I'm thinking either someone is jealous or has assumed themselves into a class they assume the woman is in - and is jealous.

Shit Steve Harvey says

ChaosEngine says...

Meh, I don't care if he doesn't want to talk to atheists; as I said, one more benefit to being an atheist.

As for my "sweet monkey jesus" comment... suck it up, Jesus (if he ever existed) was a monkey like the rest of us.

But his opinion of women is just fucking awful, and no I don't have any tolerance for that.

I don't really believe in tolerance as a virtue anyway; at least, not in the way you mean it.

I don't "tolerate" homosexuals or other races. That would imply that they are something I have to reluctantly put up with because I don't have a choice, that they somehow bother me.

But racists, homophobes, misogynists do bother me and I won't put up with that shit.

So fuck Steve Harvey.

lantern53 said:

Wow, everyone making comments here (except voodoo, cause i blocked his comment so i don't know what he's on about) are just as opinionated and obnoxious as they think Steve is.

Absolute intolerance of an opposing opinion is what is on display.

At least Harvey likes Obama! He thinks people who don't like Obama are racists!

But it is interesting to see the abuse heaped on this guy because he is politically incorrect, and the abuse heaped on anyone who might call themselves a believer in a God.

You say things like 'asshole' and 'sweet monkey jesus' and you don't give one shit who you offend.

You think he is the epitome of offensiveness, then you do your damnedest to be offensive in your criticism.

Ray Rice Elevator Knock Out of his Fiance

Jerykk says...

Chaucer, don't be a misogynist. There's NEVER any justification for hitting a woman. It doesn't matter if she's slapping you, punching you, charging you, strangling you, stabbing you or shooting at you. There's no such thing as self-defense when the victim is a man and the attacker is a woman. Clearly women pose no threat to men so there's no need to respond to their physical attacks. Take it like a man and then beg for forgiveness when she's finished with you.

Speaking Out On Street Harassment

I found that especially funny because of these "dress like a slut, get treated like one" type of responses here.
I know, the word "slut" isn't nice and I'm not good a political correctness (I actually loathe it) but maybe the problem is not with the word but with our associations with it.
You see, the problem I have starts with the idea that there's something wrong with sluts. As a man (and therefore certainly a pig, at least in my case) I enjoy sluts tremendously. They are women who share, at least in general terms, my sexual morals and enjoy their sexuality as much as I do (theirs and mine). I see nothing wrong with that. Sure, I dislike STDs as much as anybody but being slutty doesn't mean automatically being careless, just more at risk. Maybe I just don't understand men who like their female sex partners to be well behaved little princesses. They either prefer very conservative sex (you know, when blowjobs seem kinky) or they are strangely rapey. Maybe it's just our manly discomfort of loosing control over female sexuality.
Then there is this notion of dressing "like a slut". Sure, there is unappropriate clothing. I wouldn't go to a funeral in my Spongebob Squarepants pyjamas. But why is it in todays times, in the western world that is covered in billboards full of women in bikinis, so wrong to walk the street dressed in your best "sexy hooker" halloween costume? Are these women on the billboards, the ones who strike sexualized poses to sell me beer, dressed like sluts too? Is a bikini "slutty clothing"? I'm pretty sure my mom once wore one and yours probably too. As long as the important parts are covered, it should be fine.
The real issue, though, is the idea that anybody has a right to comment on that. Loudly.
If I have a right to comment sluttly clothing, can I also comment on other clothing that isn't the percieved norm? Do I get to shout ghost and terrorism related jokes at women in burkas? Can I yell at cops to come and strip-search me because I have a thing for uniforms? Should I yell at anyone with unfortunate clothing choices? "Hey lady, don't shake that ass, it's too fat for these pants! I don't want the Blob to escape!"
No, it's only sexually provocative clothing that gets these reactions. And that's why I like the video above so much, because it shows what kind of comments you get. It's never "young lady, I disagree with your clothing choice and insist you put on something decent!" nor "What a beautiful skirt, is it silk?"
It is always amused, approving and at the same time disrespectful and sexually dominant. Often gleefull and too often actually misogynistic.
These are never positive comments and even if the words seem positive, they're harassment. It's nothing but sexual harassment. Otherwise these men would be yelling "Young lady, I disagree with your clothing choice and insist you put on something decent!"
Dress like a slut, get treated like one, that's just a lame excuse for men trying to control female sexuality.
Personally, I think if you dress like a slut, I should treat you with respect and kindness. Because I want sluts to like me. I'm a pig.

The "Throw Like a Girl" Myth | MythBusters

ChaosEngine says...

I agree with pretty much everything else you've said. The problem is that any kind of mens "liberation" movement has been hijacked by the idiotic "mens rights" groups. It's not that there isn't some inequality against men that needs to be addressed (specifically around things like child custody), but more often these groups have confused not getting their way 100% of the time with being oppressed.

Regarding assault (sexual or otherwise), I think the overwhelming point there is that we should view from a gender blind perspective. It's feels ridiculous to even have to say this, but assault is bad, mmm'kay? The gender of those involved is irrelevant.

But there are some fairly deeply ingrained societal attitudes that will have to change. Picture the following scenarios:

Bob says something misogynistic to Alice. She slaps him.

Dave the evil kidnapper is finally caught and sent to jail. Someone makes a remark about not dropping the soap.

Both of those are stock standard fictional comedy tropes. The first is that when a man gets hit by a woman, he deserves it. The second is that male prison rape is implicitly funny, because the guy in prison deserves it. Can you imagine the outcry if a writer reversed those roles?

#LikeAGirl -- attitudes exposed and transformed

dannym3141 says...

@bareboards2 I am utterly stupefied by your ability to dismiss my argument whilst at the same time not addressing any single part of it. Without so much as questioning my reasoning, you've labelled me, stuck me in a box and judged me, calling on others to hear of your sadness at.....what? Detailed, thoughtful and politely delivered criticism?

The worst thing here is that if i were to suggest that your reply, or the content of this video, was "femscaping" or something similarly derogatory then you would have lynched me up on the nearest tree for sexism - the thing you want to stop. Yet when you dismiss a comment i make as something equally sexist and based entirely on my gender (because you sure as shit never once mentioned any part of my argument), that's absolutely fine.

Is it really beneficial to your cause to attempt to censor people who question the content of the message; label them, dismiss them and profess your sadness for the human tragedy of ignorance like a scientologist? A good conclusion with good evidence would not need your protection from my scrutiny.

If you think i'm on some sort of misogynist bandwagon, then you're dead wrong about me. I've criticised a couple of videos recently because i considered them to be supplying dodgy data or trickery. Whenever a video wants to make evidence based claims, i reserve the right to question their methodology and that is fundamental to any kind of evidence. The topic is entirely coincidental.

If you have a problem with my argument then by all means i welcome your criticism, but criticise the argument rather than calling me sexist names. What you did to me is no different to if i had simply commented "militant-feminist bullshit" without addressing any of the video, at which point you would have highlighted your plight and appealed to sympathy. But no, i offered a thorough explanation of my feelings, and i'm still the horrible mansplainer. No - i'm analytical, and i make no apologies for the damage that does to your cause.

Of all the people who offered detailed criticism of this video, one of them sided with you and the other didn't. Guess which one you engaged in discussion? I even offered you examples and reasoning, but no, i get just sexism.

Street Harassment Of Women In New York - An Art Project

Engels says...

There's just two different ways of saying 'smile'. One's a seemingly avuncular and friendly 'cheer up' and the other's the one these women are talking about, the one that says 'I want you as a sex object, how dare you have an expression on your face other than that which please me?'

Misogynists get away with it for the very reason you are all here defending men's right to tell a total fucking stranger across the damned street to have a specific facial expression. When you say it you want them to not look so down so that YOUR world has more color. It shows no sympathy for whatever the stranger's going through. Its pigheaded ignorant, but not misogynistic, just self centered, but its also a disguise for those who treat women like shit.

Open Letter to Ellen Degeneres: Don't Promote A Psychic

VoodooV says...

and this is what happens when you promote people who really are no better than you and I up to celebrity status. Im sure Ellen and Oprah are really nice people, but I will never understand the adulation bestowed upon them that allows them to make shitty decisions like promoting con artists and the like.

and before some of the trolls of the sift are tempted to turn what I said into something misogynistic. I feel the same way about actors/actresses, sports celebrities, or anyone who's opinion is automatically uprated merely because they're on TV or movies or have a lot of money. Luck, more than skill probably got them where they are today.

Aussie builders shock public with loud empowering statements

lucky760 says...

"Hahaha. It's so funny that these guys are making enlightened, meaningful statements that appeal to a greater society and make other people feel encouraged, because it's all bullshit because they're hungry, and really they're a bunch of sexist misogynist pigs."

That's definitely how it's most easily interpreted and how I interpreted it, but @harlequinn is probably right that Snickers intended the message to be:

"Normally these kind, broad-minded, gentle fellows are considerate and thoughtful like this, but you don't want to know how they are when they haven't had a Snickers."

If that's really their message, they need to make it a fuck of a lot more obvious.

Or maybe they meant for it to be ambiguous so they can appeal to both kinds of people. Quite the politicians you are, Snickers.
