An authority figure offers an intelligent rebuttal

newtboy says...

Clearly not.
Quit your job as a mind reader, you really suck at it.

No, you hate cops as do a lot of the posters on here. You have a problem with authority. Like these wankers, you'll stick up for and side with a complete arsehole who doesnt care if he kills your kids just because you hate the police and the laws that protect us from absolute cunts like this.

10 Hours of Walking in NYC as a Woman

Trancecoach says...

The reason why these campaigns will get nowhere: the subtleties asked for are sometimes too arbitrary and too subjective to expect large numbers to go along with it and because women are not always mind readers (contrary to what this one may think), and misinterpretations can easily occur. Some dangerous psychos and sociopaths actually come across as being quite "charming," while some friendly and innocuous comments may be interpreted as being rather creepy. So, campaigns like this will get nowhere in actually changing anything for the better.

The skills of understanding context will continue to devolve as communities break down (along with families and childhood education). Increasingly, we are living in a society of strangers, and this is yet another result of the statism that progressives continue to defend. See, it's all about feeling safe. And without community, contexts that feel safe become more scarce. A state-driven "society" is not a community.

Meanwhile, in reality, the very attempt to legislate behavior like this will serve to further develop two trends: the "catcall" culture they so dislike and something along the lines of what's going on in Japan, the other opposite. Despite what this video attempts to portray, I have already heard the complaint many many times from women that they either get harassment or they get no attention at all.

And this'll be yet another "I told you so" that they'll miss.

Amazing Mind Reader Reveals his Gift

Romney bragging about Bain Capital days and factory in China

Stormsinger says...

Wow! All that, and a mind reader too? You're awesome!

It takes a particularly high level of arrogance to tell someone you've never met, and haven't spent any significant amount of time interacting with, what they're actually thinking and how it's different from what they say they're thinking.

But sure...you're right, and everyone who disagrees with you is on the dark side. Whatever...>> ^swedishfriend:

Thinking in such absolutes has never led to anything good. It is a matter of degrees. The serial killer kills because that extreme of a thing is what it takes to feel anything. Without emotions you become passive. I am right about what I wrote. With some introspection on your end you will realize it too. Denying the dark side of yourself will force it to be expressed, which the tone of your comment clearly shows.
>> ^Stormsinger:
>> ^swedishfriend:
Yeah that is it exactly. He was telling himself and others that they really aren't bad guys because the workers want to be there. This shows that he does have empathy and does care. If he didn't care he wouldn't need to comfort himself like that. He is just really good at burying his empathetic feelings and making excuses to himself so that he will feel less bad about it. I am sure we can all relate to some degree. Everyone uses these tactics. We simply cannot help all the people in pain that we come across in our everyday lives. He has done it for so long, so much and regarding such serious situations that even desperately unfair conditions like these aren't enough to make him act properly. Not a good choice for a leader of anything.

I don't think there is any way to judge this comment unless we find out what Romney did with the factory after he bought it. I don't think he was bragging, and from what I've heard and read, his description of the fierce competition for jobs in China is accurate.

First off, you're previous comment, minus all the godly stuff, was quite beautiful and is how I strive to live my life - minus the godly stuff
In regards to Romney's comment -- from my vantage point it sounds more like he was expressing surprised relief that the slave labor factor he had just purchased was actually staffed by willing slave laborers rather than forced slave laborers and this somehow alleviates what ever remote feeling of guilt he might have had. It gave the appearance that either way he was going to work these poor women to the bone, it just made it easier on him now that he knew they were semi willing participants. Obviously this is all conjecture but I'm hard pressed to hear and sympathy or remorse in his voice, it was much more akin to "Did you know these mother fuckers actually WANT to work like this? So in reality we're doing good and turning a profit!" His voice has far more interest in that fact than disgust which is kinda the tipping point for me.
I try to remind myself that this can potentially happen to anyone. He was raised and has lived far away from what would be considered a working mans life and it is hard to feel empathy for someone if you are not able to relate to them or have never been taught it. I think it's pretty evident from his lifestyle that this holds true for him. He's not a bad person because he's evil, but because he's incredibly ignorant.

Seriously? You think his attempts to paint himself in a better light shows he has empathy?
No. It shows he realizes just how fucking sociopathic his behavior is, and he's trying to sell a "nicer, warmer" image of himself to his audience. He flat out does not care...he'd be just as willing to bleed those women dry, and profit from their blood. Because he's better than they are...they're just peons, and don't count for a thing, just like all of us. We're not him, so we don't count.

Atheism Shmatheism

shinyblurry says...

I'm no mind reader. There is just a certain light that I can see that identifies someone as Christian. I can usually tell before I even speak with someone. It doesn't mean I can tell what people believe beyond that. It's only a dichotomy between believers and nonbelievers.

Killing People Gets Applause: Welcome to Texas

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

The conservative agenda has systematically set up the economy over the last 50 years so that poor people are poorer and the middle class is disappearing.

What you mistakenly blame on conservatives is actually caused by the increase in government and the centralization of power. Larger government in bed with industry results in crony capitalism that steers wealth to large government and large companies. This is not the conservative agenda. That is the LIBERAL agenda which is promulgated by both democrats and the GOP. Fiscal conservatives want nothing to do with it. That is what the Tea Party is all about. Do you want to improve income disparity? Join the Tea Party and elect more fiscal conservatives to pare down big government, and knee-cap the crony capitalism that results from it.

So Christ was just kidding about "turn the other cheek"? You can hold someone accountable without killing them in cold blood.

First off – no one is killing in cold blood. That’s just your bias talking.

Second - Christ teaching people to avoid anger and revenge in their personal lives has nothing to do with capital punishment. A person can follow the turn the other cheek philosophy in their personal lives, and yet still support capital punishment for society’s guilty. Capital punishment isn’t about revenge. It is about justice.

And you're being utterly disingenuous to pretend they're "cheering for justice". That is BS and you know it. They are cheering for vengeance.

Who are you to say that? Are you a mind reader? Do you have psychic powers? Of course not. You’re just another biased neolib who is projecting your own anger and hatred onto other people. You say its BS. Well, could not someone else say it is “BS” to claim that neolibs are cheering ‘free choice’ when they applaud the murdering of innocent children? See how that works? What’s good for the goose is good for the gander.

Bill Maher: Cheney is a Liar

curiousity says...

I should have phrased my initial comment better.

Umm... That wasn't really the point of the unrelated question.

Simply saying he's a pretentious asshole does explain the downvote. Maybe not to you. If you know that you aren't a mind reader, perhaps in the future you should seek clarification before jumping to conclusions.

^ Yeah, I think it's fair, AND it's the law. There's no statute of limitations on murder.

Simply stating he's a pretentious asshole does not explain the downvote, your second statement did. Perhaps you should have said "Downvoted because he's a pretentious asshole". (Hint: I'm not a fucking mind reader.)

Siftquisition of Member UsesProzac (Siftquisition by burdturgler)

lucky760 says...

The problem is, littlered, that you're comparing real life to Internet life. If you read two members sending sexual jokes back and forth to each other on their own profiles and you happened to read them and felt harassed, does that mean they should be banned for sexually harassing you? (If that's the case, some serious pipe-hitting motherfuckers should have gone medieval on blankfist's ass long ago.)

I didn't cast my vote based on who is involved in this situation. I voted very objectively and primarily based on the "victim's" feelings about the alleged offense.

If the offender has been attacking people for months, it's been kept a secret from me because I've never heard about it before now. If her past harassment was detailed as part of this SQ the results would likely have been different. (Do you have links to her past offenses?)

And if EDD has also been harassing people, I also haven't heard about that. I wonder if this harassment that you think no one cares about might be because no one else feels harassed by it? Why hasn't anyone else mentioned it before now? (Or maybe they have and I just haven't heard?)

I'm no mind reader. If someone says their situation should not be a public discussion and they don't need any assistance, I take their word for it. I'm not one to reinterpret someone's sentiments and project my own translation onto them. If someone insists they haven't been victimized, we can't force the victim role onto them because we have a personal opinion about the alleged offender.

Perhaps you need to take all the names out of it and just look at this specific situation objectively because it sounds like your preexisting disdain for UP is what's fueling your passion to see her punished, rather than considering just the circumstances at hand.

And please don't get me wrong. I'm not sitting here trying to defend UP, just my reasons for voting no. It may very well be that she deserves to be banned (either temporarily or permanently) for other reasons, but it seems that she shouldn't just for her comment to thepinky.

Take a Look and Tell Me This isn't Terrible? (Art Talk Post)

littledragon_79 says...

^I was being a bit facetious with the whole post, but I guess you took it a bit more literal than I intended. I didn't really explain my thoughts and you're not a mind reader so I can see where you're coming from.

I'm not sure if the "accusation" you mean is my claim that this is terrible or my *attempt* at a little (dark) humor. Obviously I don't know where the gold came from. For all I know it came from robots that mined it in the future and sent it back specifically for this purpose in order to save the world

Also, not really sure why you linked that paper other than to point out that South Africa is the largest producer of gold in Africa. But it is in Africa and I'm sure there are mines in other African countries. It also doesn't say anything about child labor, but I'm sure that stuff doesn't really get reported/doesn't exist...or maybe it does.

As far as it being terrible, I may not know art, but I know what I like (or don't). So I'm free to take a look at anything I want and say it's the greatest thing since sliced bread or whoever made it should be publically ridiculed...just as you are free to think what you will.

I do understand that art itself is kind of frivolous and wonderous and doesn't have to make any sense. I guess my thinking was it seems like a waste of gold (could be used for electronics, etc.) and for the love of Pete, why that pose?

He's dead, Jim
