Marvin Gaye - "What's Going On / What's Happening Brother"

gwaan says...

This live 1972 performance is probably the greatest that Marvin ever recorded to video. It comes from the long out-of-circulation 1973 film, "Save The Children". The performance is quite simply transcendent, and features the great James Jamerson on bass and a middle section featuring just Gaye's voice and piano with conga backing.

Make It Funky (excellent Japanese documentary, part 1 of 6)

benjee says...

An incredible Japanese documentary on the history of Funk (voice over & subtitles in Japanese, interviews etc in English) - obviously firstly focusing on it's godfather...James Brown, and then:

Part Two - Bootsy Collins
Part Three - Sly & The Family Stone plus
Part Four - Marvin Gaye & P-Funk
Part Five - The Bluenotes, David Bowie!? & Jackson 5
Part Six - Donna Summer, P-Funk's Mothership! & Public Enemy

Plus: prizes for any Sifter who can find James Browns' Funky Drummer...my favourite (and what I was originally looking for when finding all these Funky Sifts!)

Weird Anti-Eisenhower Ad from 1952

winkler1 says...

"Ike is Ike and Bob is Bob Taft. Taft was a conservative and Ike was a moderate. This was an attempt by Stevenson to corrode Ike moderate credentials." - youtube commenter

Anyone else think Bob sounds like Marvin Martian?

Rockestra.

therealblankman says...

From the Metafilter posting... In 1979 Paul McCartney asked a few friends, namely John Paul Jones, David Gilmour, Ronnie Lane, John Bonham, Kenney Jones, Hank Marvin and Pete Townshend to stop by the studio for a bit of a jam. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Rockestra.
