inside monsanto-scientists talk about the truth

bcglorf says...

Thanks, I think we may be in more agreement than it seems too. I'm vehemently opposed to the majority of current patent and copyright law. Monsanto is one of the worst when it comes to 'making the most' of prosecuting people who by all rights should be able to do what they are doing were it not for existing patent law, and it should be stopped. I just don't see Monsanto stripping away choice from farmers in anywhere near the way as some describe. The only guys losing their lunch to Monsanto are the smaller seed developers/sellers, and those guys are going out of business not for Monsanto lawyers, but for having inferior products in the eyes of their customer(farmers). Sure, Monsanto has sued some guys growing/using their own seed, but those have been almost entirely guys like Percy who are deliberately looking for ways to grow Monsanto's seed without paying the patent tax. I'm of the opinion Monsanto is wrong to be doing even that, but these videos make out as though Monsanto is targeting a far broader range of people than it in fact is.

@bcglorf
thanks man.
that was a most excellent reply.

then we are in a fundamental disagreement on the practices of monsanto.
i was under the understanding that percy had been targeted by monsanto because of cross pollination coming from his neighbors farm.which then found its way into his crop.

monsanto claimed the genetic markers gave them property rights and that percy was liable.

maybe i misunderstood.

and most documentaries are trying to make a point and by its very nature will be biased.so i agree with your point there but i cannot agree that monsanto is somehow some benevolent multi-national corporation who has not enacted and used with extreme prejudice an army of lawyers to silence and intimidate those who would speak out against them.

they make scientology look like a bunch of bed wetters.

i guess my main problem, politics and corruption aside,is that we are talking about a basic necessity:food.

you cannot patent life.
if you change the fundamental nature of that life there should be open and transparent study and discussion.
in both of these cases the public is left in the dark and any questions or dissent is met with legal papers.

i mean.who besides a corporation would develop a "suicide gene"?

i am not saying this is a simple issue but the situation does deserve some serious scrutiny.

anyways.thanks for the great response my friend.

Secrets From The Potato Chip Factory

bcglorf says...

And the problem is largely mitigate by the price reduction in the goods the workers use to manufacture, but now are selling in retail. The bag of chips that used to cost $20 now cost $2, so even if their wages aren't the same, the buying power is better.

The real trick is distribution of the savings realized in the production line. If the company maintains the same price and volume of sales while cutting their staff, then it's the corporation making all the money. If the corporation though is forced to drive down their costs, then that is the republican's much beloved trickle down in action. In practice, both consumers and corporations end up pocketing a portion of the savings most of the time. The more competitive the market is, the better the consumers general make out.

All the people that have been made redundant by this process was the first thought that crossed my mind. But, really, I don't have a problem with what this company did. They reinvested their profits into technology and increased their efficiency. Additionally, I'm sure there are a lot more people working in marketing and administration than there used to be.

However, it is a fact that those people who used to work exclusively on the production line (in this company and many others) are no longer relevant in this service-based economy because of a lack of education and non-industrial skills. So where do those people go? They end up in retail, selling the very products they used to make but at a fraction of the wages and benefits.

This is progress; this is reducing the cost of production. But it has to be accompanied by real living wages to unskilled workers whose jobs have been replaced by machines. That is not the responsibility of this company but it is a problem that our society has to face up to.

Honest Trailers - Skyfall

vaire2ube says...

Skyfall made no sense.... the super villain has the power to complete his task, but his task is totally inconsequential to everything ... who cares if M dies she's retiring... Bond can't shoot anymore ... it would have been loads better if Bond DIED with the villain and got to go back to being dead. He has no need for the agency anymore, they cannot protect anyone let alone their own agents.

So much money wasted for effects that made no sense even MORE than the usual nonsense... the villain wasnt even a villain he was totally rational... I just wanted to see him and daniel craig make out already

Gun Control in the UK

robbersdog49 says...

The majority of brits do not feel like the video makes out. The majority of brits do not want any more guns in the country. It really was very selective about what it showed.

Regarding Tony Martin, the general feeling in the UK was that someone should be allowed to defend themselves in their own home, but that he crossed the line. There are all sorts of tall tales in the UK about how the law is massively bias toward the perpetrator, but I've personally found exactly the opposite, and funnily enough anyone who spouts off that the police are against the victims hasn't had that experience themselves, they've just heard that it's the case.

Obviously I can only speak for my circle of acquaintances but the overwhelming feeling is that Americans are gun crazy and that's a bad thing. It's not a 60/40 split, but more like a 99/1 or greater split. We don't want more guns, we want fewer guns. Simple.

Let's talk about *Promote (Sift Talk Post)

PlayhousePals says...

I resemble that remark. I too miss the cheats and have no idea how to do them. I'm self taught ... no computer training ... just flyin' by the seat of my pants all these years [and they are purdy darn threadbare let me tell you]. There are sure to be those who hate it, but I like to type as I would speak. So sue me

I never minded having 10 promotes on display and I do feel cheated with just three. I am impressed with the comments others here have made regarding the more in-depth analysis of the Quality and Promote issues and have nothing more to add of any benefit.

Personally, I like the new [dark] colors and have no trouble viewing with the exception of my green PlayhousePals against a green comment box background [Sifty!]. I did have to change my colors around after the update as my fuchsia motif just wasn't suitable anymore.

I have no trouble with the access to comments and enjoy most of the new icons [once I got used to them]. I find them to be concise and unobtrusive. I do have some difficulty with the smallness of the channel designations however. They are difficult to make out.

Whatever happens, I'm glad to have found enjoyment here and want to thank you all for the opportunity, hospitality and, from a good many of you, encouragement and support. I hope I haven't stepped on many toes or offended too many sensibilities thus far ... that would be unfortunate, but ... what the hey? Live and let live, right? You're kind of stuck with me

Tree-climbing pro, Nat Geo photog gets shot of a lifetime

SpaceOddity says...

Well it's clearly Canon gear, but I can't make out the exact models.
If he shoots for NatGeo, it's bound to be all top shelf stuff, although it doesn't look like he went with a 1D variant. Probably to save weight and be able to conceal it easier. Definitely a fullframe though, so perhaps a 5D.

No clue on the lens, but it's an L prime between 200 and 400mm.

Contraception turns men... gay? Birth control fear mongering

ChaosEngine jokingly says...

>> ^bareboards2:

1. Birth control will make it so no man wants to have sex with you.
2. Contraception confuses men and has led to an exponential increase in sluttery.

Following that logic, I'm guessing birth control creates lesbians then! I mean, there are all these slutty women that no man will have sex with. And if the internet has thought me anything, it's that hot women will make out with each other if there isn't a man around to satisfy them....

MSNBC Caught Doctoring Clip From Romney/Ryan Rally

mtadd says...

Here's an unedited clip from the Vandalia, OH campaign stop by Romney and Ryan.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkWv2HZi8pk

You can clearly make out that MSNBC clipped an excerpt at the end of Ryan's speech, and can make out the chant for Ryan at that point. Note that at other points in the entire piece, there are louder chants for Romney, which I'm certain is what the lady on the radio was referring to. In this case, both sides are being their typical partisan selves and taking stuff out of context to appease their bases.

There's nothing new here. So go ahead and keep your respective rose-colored glasses on.

Silent Anti-Masturbation Message Dubbed Over With R Kelly

Doodling in Math Class (Vi Hart): Connecting Dots

The "Vus" explained: Deja vu, jamais vu, presque vu

swedishfriend says...

Do you see black or is it more like there is something missing? I get that sometimes. I might be reading and suddenly for some reason I cannot make out the words in the middle of my vision. But it isn't blurry or black or bright or anything. It is just missing. It feels truly weird and it is hard to explain because how can there be nothing in just part of my vision without there being a hole there or a dark spot or something! Like if you look at a painting that is missing a part you can see a shape around the hole, you can see something on the other side. Having part of what you see be just missing without any artifact, it just feels slippery in a way. Like my mind just cannot process that part right now and in its place there is nothing, not even a gap.
>> ^TheFreak:

Forget deja vu, that description of Blindsight might explain one of the strangest things I've ever experienced.
I suffer occular migraines periodically. Generally, when that happens I get a blind spot that grows until my entire vision is gone, then after several minutes it clears up. The process takes about 20-40 minutes from beginning to end.
Well...one day I'm playing Halo online with friends and between games I begin to get an occular migraine. So I let everyone know I might end up running into walls for the duration of the next game. By midpoint of the game I'm completely blind. When the game ends I'm chatting with my friends on my team about the experience of losing my sight like that when someone says, "well for a blind person you played awfully well". Huh? So I have them tell me my score and I was top scorer in the game. Which is when it occurs to me that, even though I was fully blinded for the majority of the game, I never stopped playing.
So at one level I'm perceiving myself as totally without sight, while at another level I'm still moving and reacting, with great precision, to visual input.
Go figure.
