Homeless Hero Sacrifies

enoch says...

@newtboy

see all those posts lawdeedaw pointed out to lucky?
that is what i was referring.
which i gather you felt was a red herring, though i was not making an argument, just an analogy.

people have their own reasons for coming to the sift, and their own reasons for posting.

if lawdeedaw's posting this video offends you (and others) then i guess be offended.just like lawdeedaw was offended by your remarks towards him..again..his choice how to proceed.

while i will always visit the sift and consider this place a home away from home.my visits have become less frequent.simply because the video content i seek is no longer prevalent here, nor is there much interest in the videos i wish to share.

still some great people here though, and that will always be attractive.

love ya fucker..now you and lawdeedaw make out!

New Comic Con Deadpool leaked trailer

mxxcon says...

The point of this trailer (at least for me) is not a good video quality, but good audio quality.
If you can hear the jokes, and kinda make out what's going on, it's good enough.
People won't go see Deadpool because of the quality of gfx.

I'm sure many people will appreciate the potato view of this trailer, instead of waiting until the actual proper trailer is available and then posting that.

Ronda Rousey's Thoughts on Fighting a Man and Equality

ChaosEngine says...

Sorry, but it's nowhere near as sex blind as she makes out.

Fine, I get that they don't want to have men fighting women. Personally, I don't have a problem with it (I train with women all the time). The important point is that it's not a man "beating up" a woman, it's a man "competing with" a woman where both parties are consenting.

But look at this page of weight classes.

BANTAMWEIGHT TJ DILLASHAW
WOMEN'S BANTAMWEIGHT RONDA ROUSEY

(emphasis mine)

If you have to have separate titles, why is one the "womens bantamweight" title and the other is just the plain old "bantamweight" title?

Sorry, but it's exactly the same as golf, tennis, or basketball. The men's competition is the "X/Y/Z champion" and the women's is the "women's X/Y/Z competition".

It might not seem like much, but omitting "Men's" from the bantamweight title makes it the default, "real" competition and the "women's" is the secondary.

lucky760 said:

@newtboy - There is a men's and a women's bantamweight *title* because the men and women don't fight each other, so they can't have just one title, but they aren't separated as different "men" and "women" divisions. Subtle difference, but still very meaningful I think.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Patent Trolls

RedSky says...

I don't imagine it'll be as easy as the video makes out (although I don't know the details of the law he talks about). There are surely genuine software (or otherwise non-physical) based innovations that should be protected as well as your standard notions of a patent.

Payback said:

I don't think anyone has a problem with someone with a product being protected. Patent law needs to be reformed to specifically exclude patents from non-producing entities.

Protecting and serving by automobile

Mordhaus says...

Sorry, the guy had been involved in violent crimes, was armed with a high powered rifle, fired the rifle in the air, pointed it at police, and one of the officers took a chance in taking him down before he hurt himself or others.

People don't understand that they could have simply shot him as soon as he pointed the gun at a cop, with just cause. The fact that the guy lived, and will most likely use this to sue the city and make out like a bandit, is pretty much a win win for him. His lawyer is just blowing it up to make more bank in the lawsuit.

Copy pasta of salient facts, remember, these are in addition to shooting the rifle and pointing it at a cop.

At 6:45 a.m., Valencia robbed a 7-Eleven in Tucson with a metal object in his hand. Authorities said he was dressed only in his underwear. He was charged with theft.

A little more than an hour later, police said, Valencia set a fire at a church for which he was charged with arson of an occupied structure.

Just after that he entered a home and stole a car, police said.

Authorities said he drove to a Walmart where he stole a .30-30 rifle and ammunition. He fled the store with Walmart employees in pursuit.

American Loving Redneck Has Some Thoughts On Racism

messenger says...

And that's stupid. We agree.

This isn't about guilt. This isn't about history. This is about the facts on the ground now. Now. Now. Not history. Now. Stop making out like this is only about history. That's a defence mechanism to avoid talking about now. Talk about now.

White people have a clear advantage over black people only because of the colour of our skin. Do you think that's good or bad or are you indifferent?

Payback said:

...and whites (as a generalization) are the only ones on the planet who feel guilty about their histories, even though bigotry and racism isn't even remotely a "white thing".

Kinda cool miniature shock absorber demo rig

oritteropo says...

On the front of the box it reads "Sind Ihre Stossdämpfer intakt?" (Are your shock absorbers intact?), and the brand on the bottom is Sachs (German auto parts manufacturer, they make dampers, shock absorbers etc.).

This is a rather cute demonstrator showing the effect of the difference between new and worn shock absorbers using RC car parts. I couldn't quite make out the written list of attributes for their defective vs perfect Stossdämpfer, but you can see for yourself

Happy 9th Siftiversary (Sift Talk Post)

Now stop gawking and make out with me already would ya.

Happy Siftiversary!

"Stupidity of American Voter," critical to passing Obamacare

Once again, I need to see that notarized release from my wife before I make out with anyone! ;-)
Progress is good, but needs to continue.
Yes, scripture is political propaganda, not fact. It will NEVER convince me of anything other than of a person's faith in stories that have been proven to be fables at BEST. (If they were read that way by more people, as fables, there would be less trouble with 'religion' and it's followers IMO).
EDIT: I only wish 'Christians' could see that non-Christians give the bible as much credence as we give dianetic's-the Scientologist bible, and stop trying to use it to convince those who don't believe in it.

Now that I've hijacked another thread, I'm taking this one to New Zealand....I fear it's the only way I'll ever get to go there again.

are you guys going to make out?
because if you are,let me grab my camera!

do not confuse faith with religion, they are not synonymous, though they can be in the context of someone who bases their faith on scripture.which is where shiny is coming from.

i will admit to a certain joy in seeing the progression of shiny from years ago where all he would do is copy/paste scripture with little understanding, but as somehow being a rebuttal argument.

now when he posts scripture it is always accompanied with HIS understanding of that very scripture.i am not saying he is right,i am just admiring his continued progress in his seeking to understand and formulating his arguments from HIS understandings, not just words.

so..bravo to you shiny.

but here is a hint:no way scripture is going to convince newt of..well..anything.

so,i got the camera.lets get to that making out!

*side note* has anybody ever seen a thread so derailed?
i think this one takes the gold.

CNN anchors taken to school over bill mahers commentary

Asmo says...

You are empirically incorrect. You are proposing an impossible scenario, that somehow 1.5bn world wide are perfectly aligned, have some say over the actions of all the other people simultaneously and ergo bear some responsibility for any actions committed under the broad umbrella of "Islam"...

http://enews.fergananews.com/articles/2698

To speak of “Islam” as a homogenous phenomenon is analogous to speaking of “Christianity” as a single whole that includes Catholics and Orthodox, Protestants and Copts, and countless other sects, including such marginal ones as the Mormons, the Scientologists, and Jehovah’s Witnesses. Of course, we never do so, because we intuitively recognize that the label loses all meaning when forced on to such a diverse group. We seldom have such qualms, however, when it comes to Islam, even though the label “Islam” covers just as wide a spectrum of geographic, cultural, and sectarian diversity as the label “Christianity.” If anything, it is even more internally diverse than Christianity, which crystallized around an institutionalized Church from the very beginning. In Islam, such an institution never developed. There is no religious hierarchy and no single individual qualified to pass final judgment on questions of belief or practice. Within thirty years of the death of the Prophet, the Muslim community had split on matters of doctrine. Since then, there have been multiple and simultaneous sources of authority among Muslims. Authority is located not in church councils and such, but in individuals who derive their legitimacy from their learning, piety, lineage, and reputation among peers. This gives Islam a slightly anarchic quality: authoritative opinions (fatwa) of one expert or one group can be countered with equally authoritative opinions, derived from the same sources, of another group, or one set of practices devotional practices held dear by one group can be denounced as impermissible by another. In more extreme cases, such conflict of opinion can turn into a “war of fatwas,” fought out, in the modern age, in the press or in cyberspace. (If Islam were held in a more positive light in the West today, this diversity would be described as a “free market of ideas”!) To speak of Islam as a homogeneous entity ignores this fundamental dynamic of its tradition.

This pluralism extends to the most basic level of belief. The major sectarian divide in Islam, between Sunnis and Shi‘is, goes back to the very origins of Islam. The two doctrines evolved in parallel, and therefore it is incorrect to see in them an orthodox/heterodox divide. All Muslims share a number of key reference points (the oneness of God, loyalty to the Prophet and his progeny, the need to prepare for the Hereafter, to take a few examples), but they have been played upon in different ways by different sects and movements. Nor do the two sects exhaust the diversity, for they both have many branches and various theological and legal schools within them, while many modern ideological groups straddle the divide between the two sects.

Or
http://wasalaam.wordpress.com/2007/02/06/the-myth-of-homogeny-in-islam/

I could provide link after link, discuss Sunni vs Shia, or any one of the innumerable other sects (70+ iirc), discuss Islams war with itself throughout history etc, all demonstrating that you are wrong.

You are portraying (demonising actually) Islam in the same way the two morons in the video are, by making all Muslims responsible for any action committed by a Muslim. You talk about enlightenment, but your post reeks of bigotry, hardly the hallmark of an enlightened person, right?

Incidentally, the "popular" view of Islam is of a homogenous group of people, us vs them, a group to be afraid of, or to attack. The average person on the street (ie. plumb ignorant, much like yourself) would not be aware of just how complex it is, far more so than Christianity. It's exactly why the talking heads who got schooled kept trying to make out that Islam was homogenous, and were proved wrong...

But give it your best shot trying to shoot down the considered opinions of Phd's, scholars, philosophers etc if you want to continue to make a fool of yourself.

gorillaman said:

It would be more correct to consider religion one of many paths leading away from enlightenment than secularism as one leading toward it. That would usefully sidestep the sophistry involved in the rebranding of oppressive but secular ideologies as a special kind of religion. Secularists don't need to account for the actions of other secularists any more than people who aren't thieves need to answer for arsons committed by other non-thieves. Muslims, conversely, have signed up for a particular club with a particular set of club rules and practices; they are accountable.

Islam is a homogeneous whole, as much as a global movement can be. Its foundational text is intact and whole, not arbitrarily selected from masses of contradictory documents of dubious provenance. That text explicitly rejects the possibility of interpretation or allegory and there's an established, foolproof mechanism for resolving contradictions. It has a single author, really a single author rather than the fiction of the will of god being channelled through the accounts of various liars, a single founder, and a single exemplar.

The popular view of islam as "a religion that is as varied as any other in the world" is unarguably born from ignorance. It's about as variable as scientology, and substantially less reputable.

dad takes some pictures of his daughter-then that happened

robbersdog49 says...

As a father of a young child and also a professional photographer, this is really close to my heart.

I really hate that people associate nudity with sexuality. Of course nudity can be sexual, but that's not the same as saying all nudity is sexual. Running around with nothing on is just something kids do. They aren't body aware and at that age they shouldn't be.

If we're going to make something illegal or think of it as wrong because some weirdo finds it sexual, well where the hell does that end? A lot of people have a foot fetish, so are we all to keep our socks on at all times? Really?

The photo of the little girl jumping on the bed is a great shot. It shows the carefree abandon of a little kid trying to amuse herself. To me it speaks to my inner child and makes me realise how much we've lost as adults. The nudity is important in this shot, but not for any sexual reason. When was the last time you just didn't care? When was the last time you thought it could be OK to jump on the bed naked? More to the point when was the last time that you didn't even have to think that and just did it, just because?

It makes the shot interesting that her naked body is not sexual. It's the opposite. It's innocent, there's nothing more to it. She's not at an age where all of these rules and restrictions should apply to her because they are meaningless to a toddler.

The problem comes when people take innocent shots like this and try to make out that they are sexual. That's when the damage happens. That's when the little girl is sexualised. Not by the photographer, but by the people who claim to be trying to protect the kids.

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros - I Don't Wanna Pray

RFlagg says...

@eric3579 and any others:

I think the lyrics of what the band members sing are improvised on the spot. The official lyrics are at http://songmeanings.com/songs/view/3530822107859433424/ and lots of the stuff I can make out are clearly not in that version, though it matches the video in my one comment, save the improvised bit the one band member does.

So my best guess based on listening to it many times (time stamps of improvised bits in {}):

I love my god, god made love
I love my god, god made love
I love my god, god made good
I love my god, god made hate
I love my god, god made bad
I love my god, god made me

I don't wanna pray to my maker
[whoa]I just wanna be what I see
Not just who I am, but the pink in golden land
And that wide wild sky over me
Help me to the sun, hey I'm looking everywhere

Pardon god and mom, if what I'm sayin' isn't fair
Hey I'm looking to become, not the prayer but the prayer
And now I don't want to pray
[No] I say I don't wanna pray
[No] I don't wanna pray
Who don't wanna pray

(but still)
I love my god, god made love
I love my god, god made love
I love my god, god made good
I love my god, god made hate
I love my god, god made bad
I love my god, god made me

(but still)
I don't wanna pray to my maker
[No] I just wanna be feelin' free
Not like in a book, or the leaves of trees that shook
From a word that means only not a thing

Pardon god and mom, if what I'm sayin' isn't fair
Hey I'm looking to become, not the prayer but the prayer
And now I don't want to pray
[No] I say I don't wanna pray
[No] I don't wanna pray
Who don't wanna pray

{2:21}(alright Seth)
God ain't some man way high above me
[No] I think god is in the earth and in the land
I love by what I do
So for me I think that its true
That's its hard to worship when I'm on my knees

Pardon god and mom, if what I'm sayin' isn't fair
Hey I'm looking to become, not the prayer but the prayer
And now I don't want to pray
[No] I say I don't wanna pray
[No] I don't wanna pray
Who don't wanna pray

{3:04}(Christian)
When I was a boy my daddy made me
[Whoa] Read a story to him every night
Took me 'till it hurt, that stupid shirt shit don't work
[garbled] tell me to try

Pardon god and mom, if what I'm sayin' isn't fair
Hey I'm looking to become, not the prayer but the prayer
And now I don't want to pray
[No] I say I don't wanna pray
[No] I don't wanna pray
Who don't wanna pray

{3:48}(now Sash(?))
I don't wanna pray to my maker
[No] [Don't let me be a servant?] won't you please
Not like greasy crook or those thevin smiley looks
I just want to be of helpin' if you need

Pardon god and mom, if what I'm sayin' isn't fair
Hey I'm looking to become, not the prayer but the prayer
And now I don't want to pray
[No] I say I don't wanna pray
[No] I don't wanna pray
Who don't wanna pray

{4:35}Now I've seen her in the shadow
I have seen her in the tree
I don't even need to get down on my knees
[garbled followed by laugh]

Pardon god and mom, if what I'm sayin' isn't fair
Hey I'm looking to become, not the prayer but the prayer
And now I don't want to pray
[No] I say I don't wanna pray
[No] I don't wanna pray
Who don't wanna pray

{5:20 slight improv of the normal lines}Well it's alright to talk, long as you are walkin'
And it's alright to take, long as you give
But some say we forgiven and forgotten of our sins
Either way I know for sure, that we all will live again

Pardon god and mom, if what I'm sayin' isn't fair
Hey I'm looking to become, not the prayer but the prayer
And now I don't want to pray
[No] I say I don't wanna pray
[No] I don't wanna pray
Who don't wanna pray

(but still)
I love my god, god made love
I love my god, god made love
I love my god, god made good
I love my god, god made hate
I love my god, god made bad
I love my god, god made me
