Yeah, there's no way that's an optical effect. I agree with garsh and BoneyD. There would be major blurring on the blades, and the rotation would be pretty obvious and steady as the throttle changes, like it does when you look at wheels on a car.

However, I'm don't know if I buy the other options proposed... I'm going with Magneto having a fun day.

Yes this was a novel, true-to-canon and apropriately diabolical use of Magneto's mutant powers. This is one of my favourite moments in these movies, but my number one favourite is Wolverine's berzerker rage when the military unit storms Xavier's mansion. The biggest disappointment for me was never seeing Iceman do his ice-ramp trick.

no doubt, the mall dash with magneto taggies and McDonald's stop game is the bomb.....
