M60 - History in life & gaming (Ahoy)

TheFreak says...

The M60 was my weapon in the light infantry. Not so easy to fire from the shoulder while standing and I can't imagine why you'd fire it from the hip. That's video game stuff.

When my 60 was replaced with a SAW in '92 I was sad to see it go. The SAW didn't have nearly the effective range of the M60 and the higher rate of fire and shorter timed burst made it less effective at walking rounds on target. I did, begrudgingly, have to admit that the improved portability and easier handling of the weapon made it more flexible overall. I believe it was a less rugged weapon but being in the light infantry, the lighter weight was welcome.

5 Gun Myths We Believe b/c of Movies

Jaer says...

Because if Cracked Magazine is anything, they're scientific!

"So their premise that fully automatic shooting only takes place in a matter of 4 seconds is bullshit. "
Technically the example they gave (the commando reference) it's a clip fed weapon, not belt fed, thus "4 second" example applies. Also, there's a reason why the 249 and M60, 50 cal etc have replaceable barrels, over time the barrel can bend due to high constant rate of fire.

Jesus, gun fanatics get so uptight..

Why Violent Video Games Don't Cause Violence | Today's Topic

JustSaying says...

I love the 2004 Punisher game. I love it.
You can "interrogate" people in it, meaning you outright torture them for information or gratuitous, explicit death scenes. You can shove people into woodchippers, drill holes in their skull with a powerdrill, chromeplating heads or smash their pelvis with a prison cell door to pieces. Additionally there are four basic "interrogations" that you can do anywhere from banging peoples head open on the floor to threatening them with a gun (that goes off a lot). And that goes on top off the usuall ultraviolence you find in such first and third person shooters.
However, the game mechanics reward you for not killing people during interrogations and using them as well as the human shields tactically. I started playing for points, not mayhem. Which is really hard to do if you hide in a coffin with an M60 during a mob burial. It's nice to see the Punisher impaling people on actual Rhinos or crushing them in giant gears in Tony Starks living room but I'm playing to get the gold medal on that level, I wanna take the flamethrower to the zoo.
The game mechanics were really great and rewarded strategy and restraint with unlockable stuff. You actually became less violent in exchange for concept art and additional gear. That game is awesome.
The only thing that ever made me want to be violent was the way certain people behaved towards me or others. Games just feed my morbid sense of entertainment.

But it's never more than a bonus. I do enjoy it for the sheer brutality of it (and that sound - like a popping balloon), but it's never the focus of the game for me. In fact, most of the time, despite the fact that the game is based on killing, I am mostly concerned with the basic mechanics of the game, and the constant competition I am in with myself.

Bradley (APC) Fighting Vehicle Hit and Run

My uncle was a driver... M60, I believe. He was stationed in Europe and I do remember him stating that the tanks would mangle the old cobblestone roads a bit.
arsenault, I thought the BFV was a hybrid of sorts. It carries a small group of infantry, doesn't it? But still provides a bit more firepower than the average APC?

Well the M60 is no longer in use by the active military. I believe, however, that a small amount of Reserve or Guard Armor units may still be using them, though i doubt it. Anyways, The M60 was BEAST. It is one of the few, if not the only MBT (main battle tank - hey MGR most civvies don't know these acronyms) that had a secondary INDEPENDENT turret on it. The top of the tracks on that sucker were about 5 or 6 feet. I still don't think its any bigger than the M88 though.

Anyways, cobblestone roads are nothing more than bricks in the dirt, and are usually very old, and were not built to withstand heavy traffic loads.

As far as the BFV begin a hybrid.. well your right and wrong. The BFV as itself could carry troops in the back, but was also capable of independently fighting. MOST are outfitted with a 7.62 coaxial machine gun, capable of 900 rounds a minute, and as a primary weapon, the 25MM (MM = millimeter) Bushmaster. AHhhhhhh what a beautiful thing that was... Oh, whats that? You want pictures? No problem. On the left is the 7.62 and on the right, the 25MM on the left. These are training rounds, as there are many different types of ammo, all far to expensive to train with.

Anywho, the version I was on was a BSFV (Bradley Stinger Fighting Vehicle) We had room in back for 2 soldiers (the reload / Stinger Missile team) the driver, Track Commander, and the Gunner. The infantry version carries the basic operation crew of three (driver TC and gunner) plus 6 troops in back. (that one is of My Bradley - you'll notice the other seat behind this slacker. Thats he only other seat back there. The other side is occupied by a Stinger missile rack.)

There is also what we call a fister. Don't ask me what the real acronym is, i couldn't tell you. It was a BFV outfitted with a slew of gadgetry for use by forward observers for people like my brother here^, (what we affectionately call cannon-cockers) the artillery.

Ok heres the M88 Lifting my Bradley as promised.

A-Team Van vs. VW Van

Payback says...

A-Team van is a DIESEL?????? not.

Try that again with a 350ci and 750lbs of weaponry over the rear wheels...

better yet... as the VW starts to pass, the ATeam van door slides open and out pops "Baby", Hannibal's M60, which proceeds to shoot up the VW with around 7,536 bullets, causing it to swerve, burning, towards the oddly placed bushes in the middle of the raceway, flying into the air, exploding, crashing to the ground, rolling over, exploding again, and then have a shot of the VW driver walking away shaking his head dazedly...

Canadian soldiers in Afghanistan raid Taliban stronghold

NordlichReiter says...

Watch closer, i saw an M4, the M16 M203 grenade launcher, and my mistake on the M249 it looked like a G3a3 with the way the camera cut the handle seemed to be part of the scope. Ok no scar either my mistake on both, their version of the M16 sounds a lot more dangerous than the U.S. version. I would rather see the Canadian variant in U.S. use because the M16 is not the most faithful of weapons. Now the SAW thats a good weapon, first called the mini, commonly confused with the Gatling gun, put into use in Vietnam but not noted do to the M60s prowess.

Personally they need to switch over to Kalashnikov's, now thats a very durable cheap weapon.

Sorry i made a mistake, but those boys did a helluva job.
