Big Think: Bill Nye on Rosetta comet landing

removing acute subdural hematoma

JiggaJonson says...

I almost force myself to look at things like this because I want to wrap my mind around the fact that I'm nothing more than a lump of tissue. Don't get me wrong, I understand << it. But, the difficulty I have is mostly in the acceptance of the evidence as a form of self realization.
I suppose, another way of putting it would be, I have a hard time deciding if these sorts of things about brains and brain functions make me feel more or less human.

american prison warden visits the norden in norway

enoch says...

@lucky760
um...what?
inmates are wild animals?

i guess i could get on board with your opinion if the parameters were exclusively directed toward extremely violent psycho/sociopaths.

otherwise your comment makes no sense.
2.4 million inmates in american prisons.the majority for non-violent offenses (think pot smokers),70% are non-white and to singularly lump them all as somehow being "wild animals" unworthy of participating in normal society, reveals a serious lack of understanding.

the american penal system dehumanizes and has zippo to do with rehabilitation OR corrections.
which is why i referenced the milgram experiment.

treat someone with humanity, even if they are paying a debt to society, and the results will always be a better outcome than what we do to prisoners here in the states.

the american penal system is a racket,a business.it commodifies the poor and those not deemed "of value" and its a travesty.something we should all be ashamed of,not celebrating.

Colbert interviews Anita Sarkeesian

gwiz665 says...

Yo damn right.

But seriously folks,
I care plenty about the 3-4 separate issues that GamerGate supposedly are, but I haven't been wanting to engage in it, because it just seems like a big pile of crap that all gets lumped together

Issues I've seen in it so far:
1) Girl developer sleeps with game journalist - ex boyfriend angry
2) Journalistic Ethics about being a "good ol boys club" but with hippie feminists instead.
3) Women being portrayed as weak in games; male dominated development world/market/gamer culture
4) Abuse against outspoken feminists within the gaming community - death, rape, violence threats etc for various reasons

1 lead into 2, but it doesn't seem to be any meat on that bone, it was just the ramblings of the ex boyfriend, so while we should be vigilant about any journalistic improprieties, it seems like what was revealed was all just personal; and the boyfriend seems to be a bit of a cunt on top of it, so that doesn't help.
3 is probably true, but I wouldn't say it's a general direction. There are certainly games with women being weak, but it's the same with movies. There's room for that kind of games too - they don't all have to be empowering or vice versa - the market can decide.
4 is obviously not alright and the people participating in this should be neutered asap.

Fuck #gamergate (Videogames Talk Post)

ChaosEngine says...

@VoodooV yeah, gamergate pissed me off. It should piss you off too, unless you like being lumped in with a bunch of misogynist neanderthals. They are making it an embarrassment to be called a gamer.

Here's a link (which I meant to post in my original rant.. apologies)
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/10/15/sarkeesian-utah/

@speechless, this goes way beyond your average internet trolling. There have been specific threats made against people, including posting their addresses on twitter and then saying "I know where you live and I'm coming to get you" etc.

The worst part is that story from the link. This asshole threatened "the worst school shooting in American history" and he got what he wanted.

@gorillaman, you're either an idiot or you're trying to be funny. Either way, you fail.

Oh, and just in case anyone brings up the "ethics in games journalism" thing... even if gamergate ever was about that (which I don't believe for a second), it's certainly not now, and supporting it is akin to supporting the Nazis because of their stellar public transport....

Real Time with Bill Maher - Racism in America

Kerotan says...

No lumping of racists was done.
I suggested that as a member of a group you can be complicit in racist attitudes (ever made a remark about asian's being good at math for example?)
It can be incredibly subtle, I'll admit I've done that sort of micro aggression shit before, I'm no angel.
As per my last response, if you are more upset by the phrase "white people often treat black people badly" because it implies that as a white person, you might often treat black people badly then I've got great news, you aren't a racist! But you do seem to care more about implicit, quite general remarks to your character than actual racial injustice, (ie: job discrimination and police brutality on the basis on skin colour) which might be food for thought.

Stormsinger said:

You can lump me in with the racists when, and only when, you see me doing something racist. My skin color does not qualify.

If you're attacking racism by being racist, your problem is clearly not racism. Your problem is being the target of racism...apparently it's fine if the target is someone else.

"I'm so upset by the relentless state mandated murder of black Americans, that I'm actually somehow more angry and personally hurt about the implication that I may actually be complicit in perpetuating racism and racist attitudes, than the actual problem!"

Racism is institutional first and foremost. Come back to me when white people have a history as being treated as slaves, come back to me when you are considered dirty on mass just for the colour of your skin, come back to me when you struggle to find a job just about anywhere, come back to me when the picture printed of you in a newspaper is one that depicts you as a victim at fault.
Come back to me after you've sat your arse down and listened to the lived experiences of people of colour.
Then you might realise that white people don't have all the answers, and we should shut the fuck up, sit the hell down and listen.

Hilarious Footage of an Edited Intersection

Stunningly real graphics

aimpoint says...

The problem of getting higher quality graphics is what held game design back. In order to scale up the visuals, console games had to scale down other items such as world size, view distance, field of view, number of npcs, artificial loading areas, and so on. Saying that "this" is achievable with a low end PC while console games are holding "this" back is ignoring that these demos are doing the very thing console games have been doing. Cutting back the depth of the image for the glossiness of it.

Here's Hitman Blood Money and its crowd dynamics

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNC2X9r0oGY

Notice how simplistic the crowd behaves. Rather than simulating individuals, the crowd is simulated in lumps. Also notice that the textures are a lot "flatter" and blander than a few other levels.

This is the simplest example of cutting back depth in order to gloss over the something else. In this case, gloss the crowd, shallow their brains.

Law Student Prevails Over State Robot Thug

artician says...

I stop to think about things all the time.

What he's representing and what it represents to the passerby are worlds apart. In this case, he's clearly in a neighborhood where the average citizen sees the police as a protection against a non-uniformed man with a gun, rather than an activist or educated individual upholding their rights.

Gather several hundred open-carriers and visit capitol hill, or go to the nearest politician-laden golf resort with your assault rifle. Don't march up and down neighborhoods (http://goo.gl/5lhLnG) looking for trouble.

From the mostly-benign situations such as this, to the people who've had their fill of shit and gun down a crowd of innocents: making openly aggressive statements in this way is addressing the wrong audience. This is not the way to make the point.

Lastly, even though I agree with you, you can't tell me I'm lumping someone into a perceived fairy land when you title videos "Student Prevails Over State Robot Thug".

chingalera says...

My problems with the person who called the police on the guy. My problems with the person who can't talk to all police like this. My problems with the police not being able to run the script to themselves and know that they are coercive, manipulative tools of a criminal organization whose job it is to ultimately fill prisons. My problems with anyone having a problem with anyone besides the police here, Thumper. In your above statement, you side with asshole A over asshole B, A being the cop, who is a criminal, working for a criminal organization. Who's the real asshole in your assessment?

Britney Spears - Alien (NO AUTOTUNE)

Sagemind says...

That being said. It's a terrible situation when the "Music" industry prefers image over the ability to sing or play instruments.

... And they are wondering why the music industry is dieing?

Music is ability, imagination, art and talent coming together in a cohesive lump which provokes emotions fused with a rhythm that lets you feel it inside.

That's not manufactured - it's Emoted.
"Lets try putting music first in the industry again!!!!!"

Emily's Abortion Video

BoneRemake says...

You people are all believers in euthanasia, aren't you

and euthanasia in what case ??

if you are terminal and are of somewhat age to understand what is going on why not ?? you seem to lump in the definition to killing children based on a parents response. that is just ludicrous an you know it.

people who get to a point where they want to die based on whatever personal troubles that I can not adaquatly list here, they should have that option. I would assume that you belive suicides go to hell. .. . that is their decision, if a mortal body that is conscious and wants to die but can not do it by their own means, should have that option. it is inhuman not to allow that in my opintion.

really all I have been responding to is the other side of the fences argument, which seems to trickles through the fence as ideology/bible/jesus/god/ that sort.

How can you justify your position, you seem to have one but you never actually list any scripture, so is it all based on bible or was this how you are raised ? people do not just come into that style or sort of belief. You want answers from others, I would not mind understanding you a bit more, I am somewhat confused now.

In my eyes you deny people, in my understanding you see them as not worthy of second though or rights.. but based on what ?

The REAL Reason You're Circumcised

Dumdeedum says...

As I recall the study that said circumcision reduces HIV was horribly flawed - the group that was circumcised was told to abstain from sex during healing and if not then to use a condom and taught in their use, while the uncircumcised group were just left to their own sexy devices.

Ultimately though this isn't a debate about science, I've been in multiple debates about it on the internet and it's always circumcised people saying it's good and uncircumcised people saying it's bad. Sure, there's occasionally lumps of science in the mud being hurled back and forth, but mostly it's just mud.

Colonel Sanders Explains Our Dire Overpopulation Problem

RedSky says...

@shveddy

Fair enough. I guess I see things from a different perspective, but ultimately neither of us can really know how the future will eventuate.

When I see China buying up land/investing in Africa, I see a system of inter-dependence being built such as the consumer / exporter relationship that underpins US/China that acts as a stabiliser in relationships with any potential conflict threatening both parties' interests and helping to ensure stability (although some could argue trade was heavily entrenched between Britain and Germany pre-WWI).

The baby boomer generation wasn't a blip, it was very much the defining moment of world population growth. Also, by definition, growth is no longer exponential. On average, it is regressive and at the most pessimistic estimates (which I think are completely unrealistic), it is linear.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_population

As more people come up to middle/high income levels, I think what that implies will fundamentally adjust. Just as a single income is no longer sufficient to sustain a nuclear sized family, I suspect adjustments in price will dictate that our entertainment and recreational activity will increasingly be virtual and computerized with a much smaller resource cost.

I think it's a frequent economic fallacy to assume aspects of society will remain fixed. Just like how there are not a fixed number of jobs that immigrants threaten (Lump of labour fallacy), high income lifestyles are not fixed.

@gorillaman

First paragraph is pretty much addressed above by my last two above.

I'm not denying that corporations pollute because of the competitive incentives of consumers. The alternative however, of targeting consumers to inform them of the costs of their actions (assuming that this would change their purchasing decisions) is a roundabout solution that I think we both realise would not be nearly as cost effective.

If you think tax/financial incentives are not the best way to curb environmental damage, then please suggest a more effective alternative.
