Texas Declares Sovereignty from U.S.

Here's how much Gov. Perry just HATES that Federal Gov:

So, apparently the Governor just can't stand that big, nasty government, except when he needs its help.

You tell 'em I'm comin' .. and HELL'S COMIN' WITH ME!

honestly, thanks for the grain of salt

it really just looks like a couple of nervy nitwits' "theories" ... with a cultured british accent thrown over that and stock video taken out of context and rather coincidentally rearranged

shouldn't be too hard for me to provide another "grain" for all of us to consider rubbing together with the former...

there you go...

something else just occurred to me from the video's mention of the "military-industrial complex" -- this being that we often don't consider much of the context of that particularly insightful eisenhower speech:

here's a gem that just precedes the now-iconic reference...

"Throughout America's adventure in free government, our basic purposes have been to keep the peace; to foster progress in human achievement, and to enhance liberty, dignity and integrity among people and among nations. To strive for less would be unworthy of a free and religious people. Any failure traceable to arrogance, or our lack of comprehension or readiness to sacrifice would inflict upon us grievous hurt both at home and abroad.

Progress toward these noble goals is persistently threatened by the conflict now engulfing the world. It commands our whole attention, absorbs our very beings. We face a hostile ideology -- global in scope, atheistic in character, ruthless in purpose, and insidious in method. Unhappily the danger it poses promises to be of indefinite duration. To meet it successfully, there is called for, not so much the emotional and transitory sacrifices of crisis, but rather those which enable us to carry forward steadily, surely, and without complaint the burdens of a prolonged and complex struggle -- with liberty the stake. Only thus shall we remain, despite every provocation, on our charted course toward permanent peace and human betterment."

http://coursesa.matrix.msu.edu/~hst306/documents/indust.html

now *that's* thought-provoking =)

expounding on that in a much-later newspaper editorial is ike's close friend and former naval aide to the president:

"The science community is paralyzed by a phony, egotistical self-
guilt, and the technophobes in academia have had a field day for a
generation, teaching our young people to scorn the sciences and feel
guilty for being Americans. Aided by a couple of administration in
which "social engineering" was more fashionable than science, techno-
logical leadership is passing from the United States to nations who
have struck a more rational balance."

heh heh, i think something really "got his goat"

anyway, i've always felt that the surest way of losing an argument is to overstate it... i guess i feel that that's exactly what the first video does

here's what we can take from it, at least overwhelmingly so (in the court of public opinion)

- america's "reaction" to the attacks of september 11th made al-qaeda both a household name *and* target #1 of the us government (durr)

- this most likely helped consolidate bin laden's organization, and surely polarized islamic radicalism ever further, thus increasing al-qaeda's magenetism to ends both in funding and recruiting

- prolonged military action in the "war on terror" is CONTINUING to make our "military-industrial complex" lots of money (do you really think that strong ties between "death merchantry" and government didn't exist before 2001... or even long before ike's speech??)

- america's (and the world's) "military-industrial complex" will continue to thrive until (ha) there is peace... and then probably a bit longer

- the "war on terror" probably won't end even if we get every member of al-qaeda into the same denny's restaurant and then nuke it (in a similar fashion as to arresting al capone not ending the fbi's war on organized crime)

- this will continue to make both you and me sad, and the "desth merchants" happy

...

but maybe, just maybe, we should take note of what ike first said we *should* be... STRONG ... and *then* consider our thinking on maintaining the BALANCE he warned us all should be sought in his now-pop-culture reference

Crazy Storm Footage From Brisbane

T-man says...

I sat through Ike a couple of months ago here in Houston. I thought it would be fun too but it scared the bejesus outta me! The wind was more intense than this video but not as much water (although it did flood the streets) and no hail. But imagine that for 8 hours! Eight hours with no power (we were without power for over a week), transformer explosions lighting the sky, the windows creaking, branches hitting the roof, trees being buffeted to the point I was amazed any of them were still standing.

The next time I know something like that is coming, I'm getting out of it's way. Man is no match for nature at it's most intense.

October surprise??!! (Election Talk Post)

joedirt says...

Oh, its "just a bridgade"... lol. Google what that entails.

Also, I was wrong about the Bush cancelling Posse Comitatus. Apparently, Leahy revoked the crappy Congressional Act with almost no mention in the news, so apparently Governors would still have final say about military assistance in their state.

To any asshats who claim this is about Katrina. It seems odd to me to wait how many years before trying to implement this!! It seems they would have done this in a month, maybe a year if the intent was disaster assistance. And clearly this is not in response to Ike. There is no way the Army would announce this as plans of this magnitude have been under way for months, well before Ike.

It is however nicely timed around the election, and who hasn't known for months about the economy going broke and a run on the banks. Freddie and Fannie have been known to be insolvent since way before last year. That's why all the fat cats have been dumping money into it gambling on gov't bailouts.

And for reference LHC is offline for two months at least.

October surprise??!! (Election Talk Post)

Lurch says...

Ummm... close, but no. The Posse Comitatus Act is a law signed in the late 1800's and is not included in the Constitution. There are also no specific guidlines governing the use of the military in disaster scenarios in the Constitution. Here is the current wording:

"Whoever, except in cases and under circumstances expressly authorized by the Constitution or Act of Congress, willfully uses any part of the Army or the Air Force as a posse comitatus or otherwise to execute the laws shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than two years, or both."
http://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/18/1385.html

Posse Comitatus means the power (or force) of the country. This refers to raising a militia. It was originally written to stop the government from grabbing able bodied citizens and forcing them into service, or a posse, for the purpose riot control, keeping the peace, arresting criminals, etc. This was part of English common law at the time. Prior to 1878 when the law was originally signed, it was a regular occurance to see the US Army enforcing law. The law was later amended to prohibit the US Army and Air Force from being used to execute law, but it's original purpose was to prevent local governments from forming a posse, or taking control of the military for purposes of law enforcement. Although it can be overridden in situations expressly authorized by the Constitution, or when authorized by Congress. This has happened many times before in the past in the case of disaster relief. For example, in the 1930's the Army Corp of Engineers performed disaster relief operations and aided communities in preventing and repairing flood damage.
http://www.lrp.usace.army.mil/pm/johnlfpp.htm

I'm still trying to find out more information on exactly how this whole dwell-time mission thing began and who is authorizing what. As of now, the article only references training in case they are called up for support. If it is approved by Congress, then they are legally allowed to deploy. Since this has happened in the past without incident, it is reasonable to assume it could happen again. Going on what I know from talking to the unit, they were ready to deploy for Ike, but were never called. I can only assume this means that since Congress didn't say they should go, they didn't go. It would be illegal if they just started deploying without approval since the changes were repealed from the Insurrection Act in January of 2008. I'm not exactly too happy with the idea myself, but I'm not seeing this as the doomsday scenario other people seem to be visualizing. It looks more like a response to continued reports and complaints about Federal shortcomings in aid during recent natural disasters.

October surprise??!! (Election Talk Post)

Lurch says...

Well, I suppose we need people like joedirt to be paranoid about these kinds of things. You are making most of your statements off of the assumption that everyone involved has ill intent and basically are picturing worst case fictional scenarios. Like soldiers running the streets subduing the general populace. That wasn't the point of the article at all. This is a result of inquiries into Katrina response problems and complaints that the National Guard was not enough for such extreme cases. I'll definitely find out more as time goes on since I still talk to everyone in my old unit, but the possibility of being used for anything other than emergency disaster relief has not even come up with them. In fact, they were told specifically that this was in response to recent failings in hurricane response and that they were getting ready at the time in case any serious problems arose when Ike hit. As far as the Constitution is concerned, if you can point to the article or amendment which covers active duty soldiers helping with disaster relief that would help some. All that I have ever seen regarding that is the 3rd Amendment which prohibits the quartering of soldiers without consent. The Army can be deployed for disaster relief without violating any constitutional rights, and they have done so already in the past.

Text of Draft Proposal for $700B Bailout Plan (Wtf Talk Post)

12980 says...

Why we are so exhausted...Our Historic Two Weeks.

Its been going so fast and furious that many of us may not really know what it is that makes us feel so drained right now. Alot of us have fought in campaigns before, but this seems like more than the usual 4th quarter blues.

Well, I gave it some it thought. Let's review.

I think it is safe to say that the Democratic party was generally happy and energized after their convention. Glowing, crying, hopeful.

Almost immediately after, Gustav was brewing out in the Caribbean and had already killed some people. The storm was bearing in on the coast of the U.S. and millions were evacuated. You couldn't be human, or part of the movement to elect Obama, if you didn't identify with all the unfortunate people that had to pack up, leave, and spend money just to find a space to sleep, find gas, etc.

Then, with that low lying anxiety, and with Ike on the way, Bush jumped out of the circle and ran to Texas as the Republican convention started to "oversee things from there." We were robbed of our ability to see the incumbent standing next to one of his biggest supporters, proving to everyone watching that McCain would be more of the same.

Instead, we got a surprise distraction and a rollercoaster ride. An unprecedented number of people started very actively arguing about politics. It wasn't a fair fight. They're shorter, so there were alot of low blows.

Then the nation watched as Ike began to bear down. Barack canceled what was to be his Saturday Night Live appearance. (Now that just wasn't fair! I was really looking forward to that). But it was o.k., we were doing the right thing. Ike was on its way and, in a rare natural metaphor, was the size of Texas. No matter where it hit the U.S., work was going to have to be done to help alot of people.

No details needed. Wipeout. Same time, Palin was doing her press junket, shaking hands, and making friends. Miraculously, the other team seemed to start to take the lead.

The weekend was sleepless for alot of us. I don't know about you guys, but at this point I was glued to my computer, reassuring friends the polls were going to prove wrong, feeling it in my gut, which was also full of coffee and fast food.

Monday morning we woke to the news that Wall Street had lost two of its major brokerage firms. Lehman Brothers filed for bankruptcy after the government refused to bail it out, and Merrill Lynch employees bit their nails.

Barack had to swat some flies away (literally and figuratively), but the tables were turning.

Then, Bank of America bought Merril Lynch in a quickee deal and the stock market responded with a huge sell off, down 504 points for the day. There were fears about Washington Mutual, Morgan Stanley and other firms, so financial stocks tanked. Markets around the world took a beating. If you didn't know, trust me, we really wiped out everybody. Some of the markets weren't even able to reopen. AIG was on the precipice, looking out over the lemming Lehman's below, and they are huge in almost every world market, so this was going to be bad. If you watched the BBC, or any other major world news agency, THEY used the words 'earthquake, The Great Depression, Black Tuesday, and devastating emergency' to describe what was happening everywhere. I actually made the mistake of tivoing some shows from Fox News to get the other perspective and boy, there is no way for me to get those hours back.

But we rallied. We picked up. We really did folks. The more she spoke, the stupider she sounded. The more McCain spoke, the more he got things wrong in a pretty visible way. What went up, was starting to go down. Who had time for lipstick, when the house was on fire?

First, those who cared (wearing both red and blue) sat around a big table in Washington and someone said something, and someone else agreed, and someone took out a checkbook.

*The federal government jumped in Tuesday night and bailed out AIG to the tune of an $85 billion loan.
*The FCC put a ban on shortselling.
*The world's central banks took action, injecting $180 billion into the financial system to stem the losses.
*The market rallied, bounced, went back up.
*Even the government's #1 Deregulator was screaming for regulation!

So if you feel exhausted, it's not the election, it's not this fight we are in. Its all the unbelievable distractions, regrettable as they were, that hit the world the last two weeks.

Good news?

1. Their numbers are down, ours are up.

2. The judge in the Cheney lawsuit ordered Cheney to preserve a wide range of the records from his time as vice president. Oh, you didn't know he had a lawsuit against him? Well, the lawsuit alleges that the Bush administration's actions over the past 7 1/2 years raise questions over whether the White House will turn over records created by Cheney and his staff to the National Archives in January. And Cheney lost.

3. Alaska's state Senator Hollis French said the retired prosecutor hired by the Alaska Legislature to investigate Palin (aka Troopergate), Stephen Branchflower, will conclude his investigation by Oct. 10. So they aren't giving up. And it will be in time for the election.

4. The other team's lies are getting so transparent that incredible people like that female reporter on FOX, Carl Rove, and even Hardball has to call them out on it, daily.

Bottom line, this is where we stand,

COSTS OVER THIS LAST YEAR
Status: Inflation up 5.4%
Average Salaries: Down 3.3%
Gasoline: Up 35.6%
Household Energy costs: Up 17.3%
Food: Up 7.5%

Its bad, but not unfixable. I think we generally rode it out well, and it looks like everything is going to be o.k. At least through the election. We will have alot of work to do, but we'll have to do it from the Oval Office.

So, take a deep breath.... Right now. Breathe in, and then out.

Make a bubble bath, catch a rerun of The Daily Show from their website, catch a sunset, or see the funny short: 'Its time for some campaignin'

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr on Governor Palin's Reading List (Election Talk Post)

chilaxe says...

"Following the Palin acceptance speech New York Times columnist Frank Rich elucidated the political significance of quoting Pegler.

Mr. Rich noted that "Pegler was a rabid Joe McCarthyite who loathed F.D.R. and Ike and tirelessly advanced the theory that American Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe ("geese", he called them) were all likely Communists."[6]

He pointed out that Palin's use of a quote from "once powerful right-wing Hearst columnist Westbrook Pegler" was intended to send a subtle but unmistakable signal to far right wing supporters."

Interesting argument, though I don't think Palin has too much in common with the hate-filled breed of fundamentalists.

- Not to mention the massive new cost from Hurricane Ike and the raising price of oil again due to the closed pipelines.

Shame on you. Thats an insult to the people who are truely suffering across america.
Rebulicans go on and on about patriotism and loving their country...
But don't give a damn about their countrymen, just their own pockets and politics.

Massive banks failing are due to corporate greed. Foreclosing homes are due to morons living beyond their means with variable-rate loans, which are now catching up with them. Hurricane Ike is a natural disaster. None of these issues are the fault of "Republicans who don't care about their countrymen."
And liberals care more about their fellow man than conservatives, I'm sure.

BillO, you may be right about why those things are failing, but as a result of their failures and the impact that will have and more importantly, the cause of those failures, for McCain to suggest that the fundamentals are strong, really does suggest he's out of touch with reailty.

Analysts can be nobs for their fortune telling, but they and economists like to talk up the market to keep mum and dad thinking that investing in the stock market is a good thing. I don't think you'd find one of them suggesting that the fundamentals of the US economy are strong...

What this has to do with Ike, Lansing or "liberals" I'll never understand. SO please BillO, give us all a break.
