I don't think he's doing something wrong - as you say, it's his choice, and it's not likely he's going to land on someone and kill them too. I'm OK with him taking a risk, and this specific person seems to have a good sense of the risks involved.

Again, what I don't like is this activity (climbing without being safety equipment) being promoted as the way to be a great climber. Whether he (the kid) is trying to inspire copycats or not, having a show about him is going to promote this practice, and further the dangerous idea that this is "the next level" (or something) that climbers should aim for. To be clear, I'm not saying you shouldn't be able to make a show like this or that they should be liable or something - I'm just saying I don't like it because it could have dangerous consequences, and to the extent this practice is promoted we'll see more dead climbers. There are a lot of people who climb, and if the idea gets established that "no ropes" is the cool way to go, people will be more likely to try it.

More people die in their kitchens each year. We accept that. Accidents happen.


Many more people die of heart attacks than AIDS, so why use a condom? This is specious.

But yes, you're right, accidents happen. And when they happen while you're mountain climbing, you're very glad if you've followed reasonable safety practice and you're tied to something (so it's a painful tug instead of certain death). Obviously rock climbing is never going to be perfectly safe (or even "very safe") - but companies like "North Face" (who are tied to this video) should, I think, be promoting the simple practices and equipment that make it significantly safer.

Again, I'm not trying to censor or something, and I think that - for example - Jackass is as harmless as America's Funniest Home Videos. But for an activity like climbing, people aren't always great at assessing risks and are very likely to take cues from "how the pros do it" - and are likely to feel pressure to "up their game" in doing the things other climbers do. Thus I think that no ropes climbing is a dangerous idea to promote.

These "Marines come home" videos never get old, but always get better with each one...

From my point of view:

* Yes, my second comment (the one that caused the furore) was what I felt when I watched the video, the way the guy was, his demeanour, everything about him just made me think of that type of man. And yeah I have no idea of the backstory of this, and yeah, maybe they all did think it was all in great fun, even her. I just don't think it's that clear cut, I have a feeling she is kinda sad that she let it happen... but again, it's what I FEEL/IMAGINE about the video, it's what I take from it, and I said it in the comment, it reminded me of those types of men. And that type of man doesn't just do it to women, he does it to anyone he thinks he can wield power over. Again, maybe he's not like that... but I have a suspicion he might be. And it was that feeling that the video left with me that made me make the comment and downvote.

* I think all nut hit videos are shithouse, I think Americas/Australias Funniest Home videos is a crapfest of low grade dribble. Yeah, I thought being hit in the nuts was funny up until, I dunno, probably the age of 9 or so, but don't any more. It's fine that other people do of course, but it saddens me that grown people can spend an entire show effectively just watching people hurt themselves... and do so every time it's on TV. And that so many people watch it, but then I feel the same way about UFC, Jackass and any number of things that are hugely popular because people are either beating the shit out of each other or hurting each other in the most extreme ways possible.

* I don't give a flying fuck if you call me boring, straight laced, dull. I know who I am, I know I have an awesome family, job, life. And I know that I don't need to pretend to like violence, sport or sexism just to be popular.

What is the reason many of you have a problem with this video? Is it because a guy is hitting a girl? Would you feel the same if it were a girl hitting a girl or a girl hitting a guy? It can't be just because they are doing something which seems crazy stupid. There's lots of that on the sift. It's also somewhat violent, but I've seen way worst unwanted and wanted horrific violence on the sift(fighting or someone getting KOed as an example), which I find way more offensive. I'm just not sure what people find so horrible. Is it an assumption being made by us about who these people are, and what they think? Someone throw me a bone.

Yes, I understand it's supposed to emulate the look of home video, but it doesn't. It does a better job emulating Katherine Hepburn if she were behind the camera.


In this case a locked off camera might make the subject appear preachy given the contents of the address.
