Zombie Decomposition (Blog Entry by lucky760)

grinter says...

@KnivesOut . Yes. Just as today.. living people would be a problem. Some defense against pirates would be helpful, ala Swiss Family Robinson. The island would also have to be far enough from shore that any infected half dead would turn to full zombies before arriving.. the boat ride acts as a period of quarantine.
About zombies walking along the sea floor, or floating their bloated corpses across: Don't worry, the sharks, crabs, and hagfish would get them - microorganisms are not the only decomposers out there.

Ricky Gervais - Pwning the Golden Globes

It's almost like they have a sense of humor about themselves.

Heh - no they really don't. The room was literally gasping at what he was saying. Robert Downey Jr. looked like he was swallowing a live hagfish. Some were more OK with it than others of course, but clearly Gearvis was hitting them where it hurt and they didn't like it. The hollywood media is literally on fire right now with commentary about how 'over the top' he was. They are going on and on about how he was mean-spirited, unfair, and below the belt.

Meanwhile papers in UK, France, and Germany are saying he was brilliant. I think this quote sums it up quite nicely...

"By their own standards what Ricky Gervais did was a form of performance art. After all, we are talking about an industry that revels in the idea of pushing the boundaries of good taste and decency, that revels in the art of ridicule, shock and satirical character assassination. Except, obviously, when they find themselves on the wrong end of all that ”edgy” envelope pushing."

Porn distorts our view of sex. Porn separates sex from love and emotion.

Have you considered that there was never a connection to begin with? Sex with someone you love is a very different experience than sex alone, yes, but it's a big jump from that to saying that sex with love is right and sex without is wrong.

We wonder "Why-oh-why is child molestation increasing? Oh what can we do about it? Oh, no, porn couldn't make any difference, because I view porn! There's no way that there is anything bad about it! I get sexual release! If anything else, it KEEPS them from doing bad things!" and on and on and on. Porn DOES NOT decrease the need for sexual release, it increases it. The more you look at porn, the more often you want to, the more interesting you want it to be, and some people take it too far. Just because you don' doesn't mean that it isn't a disgusting an unnatural thing. Do you think sex crimes develop because a person's sexuality was kept under good regulation?

I've never wondered that, no, not least of all because I'm not aware of any such trend. Do you have statistics to back up that claim?

I'm not a fan of porn. It doesn't offend me or disgust me, I'm just not into it. Just because it offends and disgusts you doesn't make it an unnatural thing. Most of nature is offensive and disgusting. If you doubt, just look at the hagfish.

Regulating sexuality (your words) should be far more offensive and disgusting to you than anything consenting adults do behind closed doors with a director, camera (wo)man, stage hands and lighting specialists watching.

High-power slime from the hagfish - one of nature's miracles

djsunkid says...

from wikipedia:

It has also recently been discovered that the mucus excreted by the hagfish is unique in that it includes strong, threadlike fibres similar to spider silk. What is interesting about hagfish slime is that it is fibre-reinforced. No other slime secretion known is reinforced with fibres in the way Hagfish slime is. The fibres are about as fine as spider silk (averaging two micrometres), but can be twelve centimetres long. When the coiled fibres leave the Hagfishes' 'slime' gland, they unravel quickly to their full length without tangling. Research continues into potential uses for this or a similar synthetic gel or of the included fibres. Some possibilities include new biodegradable polymers, space-filling gels, and as a means of stopping blood flow in accident victims and surgery patients.

Pretty neat!

So? So, like .5g of hagfish goo has the ability to turn hundreds of times its own weight of water into slime immediately. We don't understand how to do this!
