When entering into the USAF back in the mid-90's, I was advised not to put down my denomination as Atheist. The SSgt wouldn't go into details as to why, other than if I happened to be in a life threatening situation with others, it may be impressed upon those of religious persuasion to save their brethren before making the attempt for me. It would be easier for "everyone" if I just put "non-denominational" instead. Throughout basic training and tech school, I also had the luxury of additional detail (labor) because I wasn't comfortable attending church services. Later, as I gained rank, it was also impressed upon me that to further my career, organizations, such as Toastmasters, would be enthusiastically encouraged from my leadership chain.
If things have changed since then, fantastic, but I was never given the impression that the armed forces were the enlightenment of civilization in regards to secularism, "all walks of life" withstanding.

And for @Gamble... I know your movies like "Full Metal Jacket" does exactly what's being described, but have you guys (or anyone in the armed services) ever seen/had/heard a Atheist Sergeant ? It seems to me that besides on the death bed and when you are in a "peaceful" defensive setup that only then would religion (and only then) be allowed to function full strength.

It seems incredibly counter-intuitive to have instilled or given religious Christians (the ability to countermand--without a court-marshal & on-site kick to the groin and punch in the face--[ I know they don't have the ability--they just have people that are willing to be unscrupulous for them to cover anything up--how very Christian of... yadda, yadda, yadda...]), to ever (I know the point was that he was a crappy Sergeant, but they're are many like him ; but this one example is mine ) have a Sergeant teach at basic and later on for specialists (marines/rangers/etc...) that creates a not only a physical division within the ranks, but a mental one.

If actually acted upon or even used in the normal functions of combat you put: the mission, the soldiers, civilians, allies, and more like completely missing/noticing any opportunities to get the enemy. Tactics and doing your job should always be priority number one. If religion is in any of these top priorities, except for morality (as it is altruistically linked to religion and life, even Atheists; morality is being linked more and more as a intrinsic property of our evolution and all mammals in general; even bee colonies work together "through Christ" though?...), but morality is a near fully physical psychological manifestation due to instincts and evolution (and religion; especially when you fear dying and going to a lake of fire; this could be considered a "psychotic" attribute, especially when it concerns *this, present, reality*).

As state and religion are compelled to stay apart due to the constitution and how it relates the two and law in the First Amendment; so should religion and military as they have the same correlated negative qualities as what comes from not following the First Amendment. (Yes I know it never says it, but: Thomas Jefferson did, the Supreme Court has used it many time (making it essentially a law, regardless), and the First Amendment if understood correctly (look at the Supreme Court cases involved and how they interpreted it) creates a literal gap between the State (the State can't make a law concerning Religion, whatsoever) and Religion ( Religion like the State must never become entwined in any fashion with the State; if it does it isn't considered a Religion by the State and loses all it's protections, like the notion of organization tax exemption, which unlike a typical organization can make money [this is why so many people hate Scientology as it's literally at the line that shouldn't be crossed and is considered a tax haven by many]).

Only more lives will be at risk. Giving yourself a moral boost using religion can be done silently; I know I used to be heavily religious.
Keep your mind at task; this is life and death. It's also not just your life on the line.

Corporations and 'market forces' are how we got here. I know that by admitting that, you'd have to tear down your entire belief system and start over from scratch, and that's a lot to ask of anyone. I've got no problems attempting to treat the numerous symptoms, but this kind of shit is going to continue as long as big business is in the drivers seat.

Who said anything about them being the "brainchild" of Obama? You're stuck in that fallacious bipartisan thinking. Just because I've got a beef with Obama doesn't mean I an absolving Bush of his atrocities. But he's not "in charge" anymore, so to insinuate that these porno-scanners are in place now because of Bush's Administration is a fallacious and disingenuous argument. Let's go over the finer points:

First, the TSA today is under the purview of the Obama Administration, so anything it does is the fault of that administration. Period. The chain of command works like this: TSA > Department of Homeland Security (DHS) > Janet Napolitano > Obama. When Obama is no longer the president, then the TSA will be the responsibility of the new Administration... and so on.

Second, more porno-scanners are being added under Obama.

Third, the "enhanced security procedures" are being added under Obama. This includes touching of groins and the added frequency of the porno-scanners.

Fourth, Obama even admits the buck stops with him.

Lastly, Obama ran on a platform of "change". That change was meant to "correct" the ills of the previous administration, including the Bush Doctrine, FISA, the Patriot Act, and domestically the DHS. It hasn't been corrected. It's gotten worse.

Sorry if you confused my unapologetic charges against Obama as something else, but he's a terrible, terrible, terrible President, and I'm not about to cower into submission when discussing his political failures. Throwing corporations and "markets" into the mix is a straw man of epic proportions.

These things were not the brainchild of Obama, and for you to imply they were is dishonest. If you want to talk about corruption, and Obama getting cozy with scanner CEO's, I'm down with that. My big problem with you is that you are either unwilling or unable to see these same corrupting market forces in your own ideology. Over the last few decades of deregulation and increased market influence over our politics, things have only gotten worse. Markets have proven that they are neither efficient or just, and they have zero to do with liberty.

Soccer played with 3rd leg ... Is there a rule for that...

mkknyr says...

Well, it seems like in the first shot of the goal, he is running toward the goal when he meets the ball in a sliding motion, ending up on the ground. In the reverse angle replay, he is simply standing still, there is no sliding motion, just a groin to ball thrust. Then, the ending is just too ridiculous. Definitely staged.

Upvote for the brave actor taking countless soccer balls to the twins for the sake of comedy.

Police Brutality: Cops Taser Senior Citizen In Own Home

Blame it on America's unyelding sense of justice. All must be punished. We are like the borg and we raise borg police officers. Our society (and many like ours) dole out punishment to placate everyone's need for hypocritical retribution.

Pot? Go to jail! Fight? Go to jail. Accident? Go to jail. Have to pee, public? Go to jail. Accidentally kick a paramedic in the face due to medical condition, which is still agaianst the law? Go to jail. Sick.

About five years ago I woke up in the middle of the night with severe pain in my groin and lower back/abdomen. I had my wife call an ambulance because I was afraid my appendix was about too burst or something. Fast forward 30 minutes later. The ambulance has arrived and I am on the gurney behind the ambulance in my yard. thats when the cops rolled in. In a case such as this it is common for the paramedic to do a test to see if it is indeed appendicitis or something less severe such as a kidney stone. The test is that they lift one leg (the affected side) and bend the kne, raising the knee as close to the torso as possible...if it is your appendix you will feel an intense but brief shock of pain and instinctively kick hard to straighten your leg. it was indeed my appendix and when he bent my leg I kicked, the paramedic lost control of my leg and I ended up bloodying the paramedics lip. he laughed it off since it is common (I learned later)
The two county sheriff deputies drew their tasers and commanded me to stand down. I was writing in pain strapped to a gurney. there was alot of shouting, one of the officers starting chanting his mantra of "lay still or I will tase you!" I couldn't lay still, I was in agony. the paramedic actually put himself between the sheriff and myself saving me from getting tased. Off we went to the hospital, My wife had to stay home because we have small children and couldn't get anyone to stay with them at 3am. later I learned that the officers had entered my home and performed a search without my wifes consent. she finally relented when they threatened to tase her and charge her with obstruction...this would have led to her arrest and the children being placed into police care shudder The police left when they couldnt find anything damning.
a few days later as I was recovering in the hospital from the surgery I received a notice that assault charges had been filed on me ON BEHALF of the paramedic I had "Assaulted" after getting home from the hospital I contacted the EMS service and was notified that the paramedic had refused to file charges even after being threatened by the two officers...so they went and filed charges on his behalf (perfectly legal for them to do I guess)
three court appearances and almost a year later I was finally cleared of this charge of assaulting an emergency responder (a felony) when the paramedic took the stand and explained to the judge just how everything had went down. since I had obviously plead not guilty I was liable for all the court fees on the defense. a few grand.
I have never had a criminal record, and a well established successful member of my community and I was almost raped by the people who are supposedly there to serve and protect...so yeah..cops can go suck a dick, every last one of them.

Who's Got The Gun Now Bitch? (Surveillance Video)

Toronto Police punch reporter in the face twice at G20

spoco2 says...

@shogunkai : Oh you're so tough, you think being punched in the face is nothing... that does not diminish how wrong this is in any way. A police officer should NOT punch a reporter who is doing NOTHING but filming what is going on. PERIOD. So, it's ok that they punched him in the face, but maybe a kick to the groin would be too much? Where is your line.

Retarded.

And you can see with the horse video that he was already on the path and the horses rode over him.

Gotta love the people here standing up for this sort of shit behaviour.

However, I dislike the tone the video took in regards to the black bloc behaviour, that's just bullshit, that doesn't help anything or anyone. That's outright thuggish bullshit that shouldn't be condoned (which the video pretty much did).
