WKRP in Cincinnati Turkey Drop

The flight that almost killed me

newtboy says...

When I was 17, my dad took me to some cliffs south of San Francisco to learn how to hang glide. The class met at a cliff to watch experienced pilots take off before going to a practice slope. The first launch we watched took off, made a smooth arcing turn, and crashed at full speed directly into the vertical cliff about 150' high and fell. He broke both legs at the least, but survived at least long enough for the ambulance to get there.

Dad cancelled my class, I never learned to fly.

When you forget to strap in your hang gliding passenger

Sniper007 says...

Labeling the pilot as an idiot may not be a good way to ensure things like this don't happen again. As mentioned above, the same exact thing happened to a highly experienced, highly decorated hang gliding trainer. It seems to be a momentary lapse in judgement in what (to them) is a routine so ingrained as to be automatic.

Maybe they should implement written checklists like pilots. For hang gliding, it could be something both the instructor and the passenger need to physically sign off on. I imagine it wouldn't be too burdensome since it is likely to be very short (at least compared to pilot checklists).

Baring checklists, the safest hang gliding instructor in the world is likely to be this gentlemen following this incident. I recon his vigilance is sky high at the moment. (Assuming he didn't quit altogether like his BC counterpart.)

Ducks in Germany wait for the green signal at a crossing

Animation let it down. They almost look like they're gliding on little wheels rather than walking. Next time at least make the animators watch the way ducks walk.

QUAKE: Forefather of the Online Deathmatch-LORE in a Minute

I got a 4mb Voodoo 1 passthrough card when they first came out and to this day still think it was the most "holy shit!" game changer I have ever seen. 800x600 using Glide was unreal. I also had a GF 256 and while it certainly smoked the Voodoos in performance, the difference between software rendering and the Glide API was mindblowing.

Pfft. Bird of prey might be sexier, but I reckon real props for speed should go to ducks or pigeons. You ever see a duck gliding? No, nor me.

LGR Tech Tales - 3Dfx & Voodoo's Self-Destruction

I owned 3 total 3dfx cards, including the last one, the 5500. They were great and glide was better than direct 3d for a long time. I was sad to see them go.
