John Oliver Trashes Whole Foods

AeroMechanical says...

Grocery shopping has become too complicated lately it seems to me. Used to be not all that long ago that you just got what looked good at the big chain grocery store and then made the odd trip to specialist shops for particular things on occasion. Whole Foods does have some good stuff, but it's way too expensive to just buy everything there. Trader Joe's has decent quality and prices but very limited selection. The local hippy organic grocery store/coop is in a similar situation to Whole Foods but with different stuff, and then there is the still the big chain grocery store with good prices on things that don't really vary much in quality. Oh, and of course there are still the delis and butcher shops and whatever else for the particular things they do well. Also, they went and knocked down the Pick 'n' Save that was three blocks away and are building a Metro Mart, which in my experience is exactly the same thing but with fancier decor and higher prices.

I have like five different grocery lists now. So, the end result is that I actually have access to much higher quality food at not unreasonable prices and yet somehow I'm ending up eating frozen pizza a lot more than I used to when it was Pick and Save or nothing.

It happens only in India !!!

Cannabis is a huge part of Indian culture is my point. The world is full of people doing amazing feats with cannabis in their bodies.

i can't microwave a frozen pizza while high, let alone do something that requires this much precision.

Clearly those people aren't doing it right, then.

Jon Stewart is angry at Rick Santelli and CNBC

i would have no problem making less money or paying higher taxes if it actually bought anything. and thanks to my house and my two precious little tax credits, i barely pay any taxes anyway.

the problem with the american health care system isnt completely economic anyhow. there is a culture of abuse in our attitudes towards health. i am certainly not saying this applies to all americans. but i have spent the last 7 years of my life working in an ER and watching the system be ritualisitcally abused, mostly by people ignorant of how to treat or prevent minor illnesses without jacking up a $10,000 ER bill or by dr's needing to make some extra money and ordering needless exams. or by the hospital administration saying "we want to buy a new MRI, order more MRI's so we can justify it!" oh, also when you earn less than you need to take care of yourself, diet, exercise and preventative applications fall by the wayside. its far cheaper to eat cheetos and frozen pizza than it is to eat fruits and vegetables. hooray obesity related illnesses! and besides think of all the money there is too be made off of diabetes and blood pressure medication. and in every town some dr is making a killing off bariatric surgery. fuck it, lets eat our way out of this mess. its time we experimented with an economy based in potato chip and lipitor sales.

KBR Electrocutes a Dozen U.S. Troops, One Green Beret Dead

MarineGunrock says...

Actually, calvados, electrocution = death by electricity. Anything less is being shocked.

But My base had the same problem - only no one was seriously hurt. Of course, My base also was not serviced by anyone. I was there in the relative beginning of the latter half of 2004. My base was hardly anything more than hooches and tents.

Out shower trailers, though, were fed by tanks of water (no pumps) that were elevated above the showers. Those tanks were filled by taking water out of a stream that ran through the base and filtering the water.
But we did have one trailer that shocked you when you touched it from the outside. I never could figure out why - but the electrical systems in that whole base were shoddy at best. I was constantly repairing them in my down time - often to the reward from VERY grateful Marines.

To clarify: My base had zero support personnel. It was Infantry, us (artillery) and the cooks. Sure, there were the water dogs (the guys that pumped and filtered water), ammo techs and medical support - but there were no Marines there for facility repair and construction.
During the day time, we had electricians (Iraqi Locals) that would come in and repair broken systems, but they only stayed during the day - and they could only fix so much shit at once - there were only two of them.

Word got around somehow that I was did electrical work before I joined. I would have people come to my hooch at night asking me to fix their lights or air conditioner. I would do it every time, mostly because there was no one else that would do it, and partly because they would "pay" me with shit they had like candy bars, Playboys, or whatever else.

It's pretty sweet what you can get when you hook up the chow hall guys with A/C, though. I was eating stuff I never knew the base had, like frozen pizzas.

have u looked into eating out?

This is the cooking channel, lol.

I have oatmeal for breakfast, and eat out for lunch, but cooking dinner saves money.

Eating a meal out: $7.40
1 month's supply of oatmeal: $6
25 pound bag of rice: $9
4 pounds of good frozen chicken: $10
Frozen pizza: $3
etc...

oatmeal + lunch out + dinner out = $450/month
oatmeal + lunch out + dinner at home = $300/month.

So every day I save $3 by doing like 15 minutes of cooking/dishcleaning at home.

Cooking chicken takes only a few seconds of actual work; the rest of the time is surfing the web on my computer while I wait. Cleanup is the real work. Hence, I want to get baking dishes that are ridiculously easy to clean like my teflon frying pans. Besides, there's nowhere close I could go if I get hungry at 5am.
