Who Needs Wingsuits?

newtboy says...

No, sorry, ditching meat and dairy didn't cure his arthritis. It's likely that swimming and training to freedive relieved his symptoms by effectively oxygenating his blood more efficiently and to higher levels. There is no cure for arthritis.

Free diving requires excessively high iron levels in your blood, which is exceptionally difficult to achieve on a vegetarian or vegan diet. That's why very few top ranked freedivers (or other top ranked athletes) are vegan instead of all of them.

True, vegetables don't have cholesterol, but poly and monounsaturated fats they do contain can still raise human cholesterol levels when over consumed. It's just not as simple as plant good, meat bad.

No clue where you get this 20% boost of O2 use efficiency claim....have any references or even explanations? It contradicts everything I find that shows only around 1/2 the iron found in those few vegetables that contain iron is useable by the body unlike iron found in dark and red meats.

Interesting backstory to this diver Stig Pryds - like many other people , he cured his arthritis by ditching meat and dairy.

He's supposed to be in a wheelchair and on medication.

He started swimming as therapy for his arthritis too, and turns out he's the worlds best freediver......which no doubt makes him talented, but when you think about how not eating cholesterol (only in meat/dairy/eggs/fish) will clean out your arteries, it's no wonder his blood is able to stay oxygenated for longer periods. Along with eating greens, he'll be around 20% more efficient at utilizing oxygen and creating energy.

I wonder if he'll be in the upcoming James Cameron's Game Changers documentary.

I said boring dive site, and I stand by it. Featureless, lifeless rock is not exactly my idea of an interesting dive site.

And taking a lungful from the cameraman's octopus would be a really bad idea.

If you're free diving, you don't inhale compressed air at depth unless it's an emergency, and you're going to resurface with the safety diver very slowly.

@Curious, the diver is Guillaume Néry. He's real and he's done this kinda thing before.

You guys must be kidding. That video was fantastic; boring dive my ass!

Also I figured that while it looks like free diving, but each shot is not really that long. Take another lungful from the cameraman's spare respirator and continue floating along. Doesn't take anything away from the producers, I just usually like to try to figure out "HOW IT'S MADE".

I supposes that I haven't seen the figures on risk to people directly harassing great whites while free diving...
Although, if you were to tell me that no one has ever been attacked while doing this, I wouldn't be surprised.
..I also wouldn't believe that it was anywhere near comparable to the risks of surfing.

I know some of you are joking, but I think you're overstating the risk here. Shark attacks against humans are rare. Shark attacks against divers are even rarer. Shark attacks against divers underwater are practically nil.

The risk of doing this vs (for example) surfing at dusk are much lower. Personally, I'd say it's worth the risk for the chance to interact with one of the most amazing creatures on the planet.

Underwater Base Jumping

Skeeve says...

What part about it isn't real? The footage is real, as far as him doing all that stuff underwater goes. As was said, he didn't actually reach the bottom without flippers and a rope, but there wasn't any trick photography or anything.

What happens to the human body while quickly rising and lowering in deep water? Nothing if you are free diving. You get "the bends" if you are using compressed oxygen but if you are holding your breath you can rise to the surface as fast as you want.

As far as human body density goes, yes, in general, it is very close to that of water. More fat makes you less dense, more muscle makes you more dense. Going deeper will make you less buoyant. Wearing a weight belt (as the guy in the video is) will make you sink even further/faster.

And some people can't swim so are afraid of deep water, give them a break - not everyone can be full of hot air.

>> ^Chinspinigcra:

Anybody else annoyed at the fact that some people think this is real? Learn about what happens to the human body while quickly rising and lowering in deep water. Look up human body density and how close it is to water. Then you simply must say eureka as you uncover the workings of flotation. Honest to god, just being afraid of swimming in water, at all, is complete nonsense. That is like a bird being afraid to hop around on the ground.
