Someone should probably be looking after the *Viral channel (Viral Talk Post)

xxovercastxx says...

Some way to make the descriptions more visible would certainly be good, but ultimately people need to take responsibility for their invocations. If someone can't be bothered to know what the channels are for, then they shouldn't be assigning any.

You can't always count on people reading those descriptions, so the name has to be as descriptive as possible. That's the same reason I'm raggin on deano, because bravo is a misleading name.
So yeah, it would be nice, but so would a million dollars for number 1 video.
>> ^xxovercastxx:
Perh
aps a good place to start would be to have people read the channel descriptions. Viral's description clearly states, twice, that it's for viral ads.
>> ^gwiz665:
There is a bit of overlap in viral and meme. Viral does not only mean "viral ads". A video can also "go viral", which is basically that it's popular and shown on all sorts of sites.
Meme is sorta the same thing, but usually with remixes, recreations and such.
There are plenty of channels which are pretty rarely used, but I think it would be a shame to outright delete them: mystery, grindhouse, islam, travel, election08; these are channels that aren't really used much that know of (pretty narrow definitions), but it would still be a shame to just remove them, because those videos that do use it would lose out.
If you wanna see a channel that's often mis-invoked, I point to bravo - which have gotten better, though.
I don't think we can "fix" the channels with band-aids and gum, if we need to change it, we need to do it majorly.

When Bravo is used poorly I am totally all over it! Thanks to the power of RSS.

Clean Up The Channels (Election Talk Post)

Clean Up The Channels (Election Talk Post)

Crake says...

Just for the, admittedly rare, cases where "election08" is the only tag for a video, it would be harder to find again. subchannels would solve this problem, but afaik, the channels aren't currently nested like that.
>> ^campionidelmondo:
Wouldn't "elections" just be an unnecessary subchannel of "politics"?
So all the videos in that channel would still be in the politics channel, no? I don't understand what you mean by letting them loose, or why they'd have to be discarded>> ^Crake:
instead of deleting the channel and letting all those videos loose (or discarding them), couldn't we just have "defunct" channels, which still showed up next to the videos in question, but were taken off the submission menu?

The EIA channel should be... (User Poll by xxovercastxx)

xxovercastxx says...

^It just feels sloppy to me, but clearly I'm in the minority.

I still think some channels could use tweaking. I think all channels should have a clear channel description no matter how obvious we might think they are. It also makes sense to me to consider redefining channels that might not have worked out as originally planned. That doesn't mean a complete change of the channel's definition, just a shift. #election08, for example, is pretty much a dead channel at this point. Why not change it to #elections?

B). Delete a bunch of the channels and slim it down - doing this creates 2 problems:
a). you would have to create an "Other" channel (bad idea).
b). you would have to remove the Ruby reward of being able to create and run a new channel (also a bad idea).

Neither of these things logically follow the choice to trim the channels back. If anything, I think we'd be more likely to stop making new channels if we don't clean up from time to time.
Creating an "other" channel is a bad idea. Why did you come up with it?
I think a combination of cleanup (your option B) and organization (your option A) is the best solution.

Remember that the channels we have were created because we saw a need. If we remove a bunch of them, then there "WILL" be those videos that no longer suit the remaining channels. Which is why I brought up the "Other" tag (a particularly bad idea) because there has to be an option for those videos. (I for one, would never want to see an Other channel.)

I'm sure I can up with channels that can be deleted too but they aren't going to be the same as the next guy that uses those channels. (Cinema, Election08, Future, Humanitarian, Mystery, Obscure, Travel, Woohoo). These were created by people that saw a need for these channels. Categorize the channels, but be careful what you want to remove, cause like I said, I like the channels, as many other do.

Back to the point of this post: EIA and FAIL are different. I suggest the moderators define, judge and remove posts that don't belong. There will always be overlap.

Sort of like the overlap between Animation & Woohoo, Comedy & Happy, Standup & Talks, Music & Livemusic, Conspiracy & Lies...

Overlap doesn't have to mean "the same thing" they are more like adjectives, they help to define.

Getting Ready for VideoSift 4.1 (Sift Talk Post)

I think most of us can agree that the number of channels can be overwhelming, even to experienced sifters. I propose that we categorize some of them, if we can. I've tinkered a bit with it, but some categories are near impossible, because they are pretty subjective, but others like "time/period" or "area" are pretty general. Here are some of the stuff I've mulled with (sorry for the wall of text):

Uncategorized (for now)
Art - Books - Bravo - Catsanddogs - Comics - Conspiracy - Controversy - Cooking - Drugs - Eco - Fail - Howto - Law - Military - Money - Magic - Meme - Nature - Sports - Spacy - Timeshift - Terrible - Travel - Waronterror - Wheels - Wings
