Henry Ford’s Water Powered Gristmill: An Unexpected Story

newtboy says...

I thought outward bound was for “troubled teens”….getting them away from the bad influences in their daily life and into nature where they can’t do drugs or steal anything under strict rules enforced by tough drill sergeant types.….no?

police detaining a person for no reason

newtboy says...

I must say, I wish it was alien to me as well. It is a disturbing thing to have to fear any interaction with those charged with my safety, but it's the only reasonable reaction when you have had the types of disrespectful interactions I've consistently had with police, no matter how compliant and respectful I was, invariably they are disrespectful, angry, and dishonest.

I grew up believing that cops were there to help citizens and that telling the truth to them is always the best thing to do. Personal and familial experience has dissuaded me of that belief thoroughly.

I'm also a middle-class, middle-aged, straight, white dude, but because I've lived in poor (largely black) areas I have been repeatedly targeted by police for 'sticking out'.

I've seen numerous close family members believe cop's lies, say too much trying to be helpful and/or truthful, and charged with crimes for what they revealed, or in some cases what the cop SAID they revealed. I've personally had cops lie on the stand about what I've said and/or done in their presence, and had them caught by the judge (lucky me) in the lies. Friends and family were not so lucky, and some of them did serious time for things they either did not do or things they were told would be ignored if they just told the nice friendly cops where the fireworks/pot/beer/anything they need to know about/etc. was, then when they tell the truth, officer friendly morphs into angry drill sergeant who charges them with any possible infraction he can think of and off to jail they go charged with the crimes they were promised would be ignored or crimes the officers created by lying.

When you see this behavior repeated time and time again, directed towards quite different people, one must conclude that it's an issue with those in the profession, not any personal issue by the victims. It's quite sad.

I have to admit, this kind of thinking is alien to me.

Maybe it's because I don't live in the US, maybe it's because I'm a middle-class, middle-aged, straight, white dude, but I simply don't have this kind of adversarial relationship with cops.

Even in the last few times I was in the US, every interaction I've had with police was courteous and respectful, even when I was in the wrong (like when I was pulled over for speeding).

Same in NZ. I don't have many official interactions with cops, a few random alcohol breath tests, pulled over once for speeding, but again they've always been fine.

Now, I absolutely would take this line if I encountered a situation like the one portrayed here, but as a general rule, I don't think most cops are out to get me, and again, maybe that's just because I'm not their target demographic.

The 10 Stages of Having to Pee

artician jokingly says...

<quote>The ability to hold my bladder until my drill sergeant authorized me to evacuate is one of the many things I learned while I was enlisted in the US Army. It is also probably the most useful thing I learned as far as I am concerned.</quote>

See, I always try to tell people the Army is good for something, and here's proof.

Watching the movie now.

That drill sergeant is something else, reading on some background on Kubrick working with him, he came up with most all the insults off the cuff. Whats that word when you go off script ?

Old Crow Medicine Show "Big Time In The Jungle"

calvados says...

http://www.lyricstime.com/old-crow-medicine-show-big-time-in-the-jungle-lyrics.html

Down in Eutaw, Alabama in 1965
A young man ‘bout 21, no different than you or I
He’s catchin’ catfish, and gettin’ drunk
But Uncle Sam called, he called him up
Sent him out to Vietnam
That young man
Got his life turned upside down
Turned his smile into a frown
Robbed that king of his crown
For an ideal he didn’t even know about

He was gamblin’ at the wagon when that army man showed up
And he flashed that pen and paper
And ol’ Flukie he signed up
There’s gonna be a big time in the jungle
Gonna be a firefight
Gonna be a rumble
Send me out to Vietnam
I’ll fight ten men
I got nothin’ left in the States for me
I wanna see the world you see
I know that Uncle Sam needs me
To fight for an ideal I know nothing about

Oh the drop point was dusty and the drill sergeant was loud
And he could not see the corpses for the ragin’ dust cloud
Grab your duffle bags, head to the checkpoint
Welcome to Vietnam, boys, you’re in for a hell of a fight
Take it from the ones who know
The army moves slow
Hurry up and wait, don’t sleep late
And learn to hate your brother
Before you hate your foe

On patrol out in the rice fields, them choppers flew low
Glancing for the hand signal to tell you where to go
Then the bombs started fallin’
And they pounded his brain
And he thought about Eutaw and who was to blame
For sendin’ him to Vietnam

I'm impressed with how the drill Sergeant gave them a chance before dismissing them.

That guy was a bit of a freak but shooting a gun for the first time is a bit of a surprise - movies don't prepare you for how LOUD they are!

Scorpion vs. Black Widow ~ Intense, sheesh!!!

MarineGunrock says...

"However, none of this places you above us."

Of course it doesn't. To think it would is absolute insanity.

"I realize that you've been brainwashed to believe that you are the ultimate form of human..."

Eh, you're close. They want you to think that you are a better citizen than most people, because it keeps your behavior up. But to say that I think I'm the ultimate form of human, or that I think I'm better than anyone else? That's just absurd.
All I was offering is that my experiences would enable me to see humanity from a side that most people can not.

"top trying to be everyone's drill sergeant and just have a discussion. You're not impressing anyone."

I'm really not even sure what that was supposed to mean. Besides, we have Drill Instructors

Wow, the signal to noise ratio on this debate is terrible. There's a couple statements here I was interested in replying to; some serious and some not so.

You can't be serious. Not only does that video not show loss of human life, but there wasn't even any loss of life off-camera. That encounter wasn't planned for amusement, it was an event that unfolded naturally and just happened to be caught on film. The participants also had an important option that our arachnids here did not: run the fuck away.

Next fight should be Scorpion vs Brown Recluse

Brown recluse spiders are not aggressive and generally attempt to escape or hide from threats. That's why they call them recluse. No doubt you've seen photos of a necrotic brown recluse bite and somehow got the idea that they are vicious fighters. Bites rarely turn necrotic and when they do, it takes several days. Your proposed fight would be roughly equivalent to a Staffordshire bull terrier vs a mallard duck with avian flu. The dog might get sick and die later, but it's going to rip that duck to pieces.

Sorry for causing controversy

Controversy is nothing to be sorry about. All the best moments here start with some controversy. It's the quality, or lack thereof, of many of the posts that people should be sorry about.

It's called NATURE. If you can't handle it, then stay the fuck out of this channel. What next, are you going to bitch and cry about a video showing a lion taking down a zebra in Africa? "Oh, that's cruel!"

It's been called nature, yes, but I fail to see the natural aspect of a cage deathmatch. As I implied above, most animals will try to escape when faced with death. That's what you might call a natural reaction. The spider attempts to put distance between it and the scorpion a couple times, but it can't because it's trapped.

If anyone could understand humanity, it's a "military man." I guarantee I've seen and experienced WAY more shit than you ever will. I've seen shit that would make normal people gag, seen stuff that would give people nightmares for months, and experienced things that would warm the coldest of hearts all in one week.

MG, let me preface my actual statement. I do this because what I'm about to say may well offend you and that's not my intention, though it's probably unavoidable. I think I speak for the majority here, that I respect your sacrifices and service to our country. I also respect your opinions and acknowledge that if it weren't for people like you, we may not have the right to have opinions.

However, none of this places you above us. I realize that you've been brainwashed to believe that you are the ultimate form of human, but the only people who believe that are the other people who were brainwashed with you. In the past 10 years or so, I've known several people who've been in the corp. They've all come out with the same superiority mentality. We all know you've had unique experiences and have unique insights, but so has everyone. Stop trying to be everyone's drill sergeant and just have a discussion. You're not impressing anyone.

The sift will sift what it feels is appropriate or not. Since this video doesn't break any of those rules. It shall be...

I'm downvoting this, myself. I don't believe it breaks any of our rules, and it doesn't even particularly offend me, I just find it has no value. If I wanted to watch lower life forms crawl all over each other, I'd go download the Paris Hilton sex tape. This isn't an insightful look at nature, except maybe the nature of immature boys. It's not entertaining, funny, creative, educational or anything else I believe the sift seeks to represent.

Scorpion vs. Black Widow ~ Intense, sheesh!!!

dannym3141 says...

Ahh MarineGunrock.

I think you're an idiot, but that's based on your small minded bigoted attitude towards gay people.

But aside from bringing that up again, I want to quote:
"IT'S CALLED NATURE!" -- MarineGunrock

I disagree on 2 counts:
1. i did a very very quick search on wikipedia, which told me that a "gold scorpion" appears in israel and egypt, whereas the "black widow" appears in south africa, north america and australia.. so based on that information ALONE (and this may come as a surprise but i am not an expert), they're not gonna meet naturally. so it's not like we gain any knowledge about nature from it. we know the behaviour of both creatures, so there's no value there. if they never meet in nature then we gain nothing there. and i don't think cd covers occur naturally in the wild so i don't think we're getting any decent knowledge about terrain usage.
(in retrospect i admit that we may have discovered something unique, and i'm simply manipulating the fact that nothing impressive happened - fair enough, call me on that)

2. your argument has flaws.. where does "IT'S NATURE!!" begin and end? if i took a 6 year old toddler and put him in a room with a 12 foot long monster snake from the movies, that wouldn't be nature, would it? would a labrador vs. the snake be nature? at what point are you going to distinguish between nature and just plain old fashioned cockfighting? like it or not, it's not nature. if you'd done it in a garden i could give the benefit of the doubt, but here it's just cockfighting. i don't know what you think the difference is between cockfighting and this is. like a cock goes through a whole survival and combat training course?

they're "bred and raised to fight", as though that means anything other than "i'll breed this big cock with this big cock (lol big cock), then make it fight weaker smaller cocks for food!".. i don't know, i don't breed fighting-cocks, but i'm willing to hazard a guess that they aren't sent away to cock-camp with a big cock-drill-sergeant screaming at it until it eventually turns it into a man-cock.....and we learn a lot about the human condition, progression to manhood, and the secret inner demons of the bullying drill-sergeant-cock.

you can argue about "cognitive ability and/or the ability to feel or experience pain/terror" till you're blue in the face, and you'll still never be 100% certain whether or not the thing can think/experience/feel. especially because we can only understand thinking/feeling/experiencing in our OWN terms.

not having a go at the poster, simply putting forth the arguments for the opinion that this really isn't a nature thing.. it's just small-fry cockfighting.

and, always, winding MarineGunrock up.

EDIT;
MarineGunrock proving he's a deep and intelligent guy: STFU next time before you open your ignorant mouth.

i'm paraphrasing, but i think you effectively told fade to "SHUT UP BEFORE SPEAKING NEXT TIME!!".. keep at it slick, you're dead special
