Being around bears so much in my life this is pretty much how I expected them to sound. It's a different dialect though. You can tell they are Russian by their accents.

I gotta hand it to ya, @dag. One thing that transpired this weekend really highlighted this for me. There can't be many public places on the Internet where you can have a substantive discussion\debate\dialectic on abortion without it turning into a horrific flamewar.

Thanks for the link! I especially appreciate that Sagan brings the science and facts to bear in his consideration, and it's impossible to argue with his methodology. I have to say there's something personally gratifying in that we've trodden some of the same ground in our little dialectic.


Sure, I disagree with his ultimate conclusion, but that's because I believe there's a distinction between human cognition and human consciousness (or "ensoulment" as he terms it).

I was expecting this to be more about cultural differences (like the tipping thing) than dialect differences. Dialect differences are interesting too, but it's not that we don't get that the "boot" is the trunk and "thongs" are flip flops, it's that we don't call them by these names so some confusion is to be expected.

I got one more thing she can add to her list of shit she doesn't get, too: apostrophes. (Or maybe I should say "apostrophe's")

This cartoon isn't loaded with negative stereotypes,I'd give it a 3 on a 1-10 scale. The kids are dressed in decent clothes and the girl has a farm and raises chickens.The dialect sounds southern United States and not overtly exaggerated though it's probably done by white voice characters. Seen way worse.

They did make the boy steal eggs though and you know in Hollywood theys' always reinforcing that old, "black folks steals eggs" stereotype!!

Dialects gets created and die out all the time. It's just a matter of time and geographic location of a population. And if the isolation is long and severe enough you get new language. While it's interesting to document the different dialects and languages being spoken all throughout the world, trying to save them would be a tad too much in my opinion.

It's like trying to save leaves from decomposing. They get regenerated every summer. The old ones need to die out to give room for the new ones.

Some translations:

They made the box out of wood since bears do not like metal surfaces.
Juuso (the male bear) tried to take it a apart first so they left it overnight to see if it holds.
That 480kg is a Finnish record and if it was made during the day it would've been over 500kg. That's why they weighted them in the morning.
The bears are very curious and friendly (duh...) and eat mainly reindeer meat, fish, fruit and vegetables.
The guy said at the end that Juuso the bear is very helpful and eager to test that everything holds well and firm.. Another way of saying that he will break everything if it's not..

This from a zoo very near to me, very noce to hear that Ostrobotnia dialect where you put extra wovels everywhere, for ex "Alku" (beginning) becomes "Alaku".. Takes away some of the "rattattatata" nature of Finnish language where there is a lot of strong, sharp consonants. For ex "bear" is "karhu".
