Apple and Foxconn: Who made your iPhones.

longde says...

How do you know that @coolhund ? Have you checked the books of the other manufacturers? Just because a product isn't sexy doesn't mean it can't be wildly profitable. And the last I checked, Foxconn uses economies of scale to achieve profits. That means that if it weren't for Dell, HP, etc also buying from Foxconn, Apple would not able to get such a deal.

iPhone outsourced factory (Foxconn) struggles with suicides

If you're going to out one company for being in business with Foxconn, why not out them all? Own a game console? Your Xbox, PS3, and Wii were all made here. Like to read? This is where your Kindle came from.

Foxconn isn't just producing ithings and iphones, they assemble 40% of the world's electronics. Here's a list of SOME of Foxconn's clients (from wikipedia):

My Windows 7 on my Dell 1564 takes years.
literally. years.

Prefab systems might be bleh, but all laptops are prefab, and you really can't custom build one for an affordable price. Not yet anyway.

What is in Plano, Texas other than a lot of FedEx assholes?

"The city is home to many corporate headquarters, including Ericsson Inc., Rent-A-Center, Crossmark, Dell Services, Pizza Hut, Alliance Data Systems, HP Enterprise Services, JCPenney, Frito-Lay, Cinemark Theatres, Dr Pepper Snapple Group and Siemens PLM Software."

I stand corrected, it is of the schtuff that many a JG Ballard novel is made of.

If you're a FPS gamer that takes his shit serious you want a CRT. My parents threw away a realllllly nice 120hz 19inch CRT because they thought it was junk. I was so mad. Its really fucking hard to find good CRTs since nobody makes them, and the 120hz LCD on the market just aren't as good as the old tech (and they are expensive), even if they don't take up the entirity of your desk.
tl:dr Don't mock the microwave monitor

Here here! My main monitor is a Sony FW900 with a couple 22" LCDs by it's side for triplewide action. To further drive this post into unapologetic nerd-land, the magnetic field output of my Dell P2210 LCD @ 1.5' is substantially higher than the Sony CRT, and I've got the data to prove it! Looking for recommendation for a new laptop. (Geek Talk Post)

direpickle says...

It's a couple of years old at this point, so it's not entirely applicable to compare to current models (which I haven't used in person, but which blow mine away in terms of battery life and other specs), but I have been incredibly happy with my Lenovo Thinkpad. The only peeves I have with it are related to the touchpad, and the touchpads they have now are entirely different.

I have a T61p, which was the kind of high-end workstation model. Thinkpad keyboards are pretty much the best you can get, the laptops themselves are sturdy as Hell, and mine came out of the box with a 4-hour battery life. It's more than 2.5 years old now, and I can still get ~3 hours out of it. The new comparable models (the T510 and T410 or whatever) boast ridiculous 10-18 hour battery lives, depending on how you outfit them.

They're a little pricier than comparable Dells or whatever, but the build-quality is worlds above, and you can get good deals if you buy at the right time or use an online coupon (just Google around).

Revoke BP's Corporate Charter

dystopianfuturetoday says...

"Work for us or we'll kill you" is pretty bad. Do we have conclusive evidence of any US corporations using those sweatshops with prior knowledge? If so, then that's terrible. I say we should launch a persuasive campaign against that.
That aside, private or public, I'm not sure either are devoid of expressing "tyranny". Either there's anarchy where there's a huge chance of individuals (what you euphemistically call private) where people rule themselves. Or there's statism where a government (proven to yield fascism over time) that rules the government, and then there's minarchism that believes in people ruling themselves yet sees that fundamental necessity of government. [this example excludes divine rights and monarchism]
All of those are capable of tyranny. There's no foolproof system. They're all flawed. Show me a better system. Testicle's in your court.

Well, we've talked about Foxconn, which Apple, Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo and Dell have all admitted to using. There are small pockets of outrage in the press and public, but in general, I think most Americans (and our government) are OK with this kind of exploitation as long as it's done far away and as long as we get all the benefit.

I've heard you mention minarchism before and it sounds nice in the hypothetical, but how do you get the powerful to honor it and not just do as they please? I don't see any mechanism in anarchy or minarchy for suppressing private tyranny.

iPhone Manufacturer raises wages to stem employee suicides

spawnflagger says...

Well, it's either a fast suicide now, or long drawn-out painful death of cancer, inevitable due to the harsh toxins they are exposed to daily. Manufacturing printed circuit boards, integrated circuits, etc is a pretty hazardous operation.

Also, the rich manufacturing guy was being criticized, but not the rich bigwigs at Apple, Microsoft, Sony, Nintendo, Dell.

If foxconn wasn't making the products cheap, another chinese manufacturer would have been given the contract. If the iPad was made in USA, it would probably cost $2000+ (and that would be from a highly automated robotic assembly line).
