Lewis Black rants about cancer

gwiz665 says...

I think you're missing the point, tymbr.

I read it as this:

Cancer is most likely the worst disease around - we have no good cure outside of chemo, which in itself really sucks. Other diseases may be worse in the given case, but cancer is the most persistent, vicious disease out there. (As far as I know it's not technically a disease at all, "just" a mutation that won't quit, but that's beside the point).

His argument is that doctors are too busy doing maintenance work instead of finding new cures, and that research scientists are working in fragmented cells which do not complement each other as good as they could. Pharmaceutical companies that work on the problem don't want to share their findings until they are patented, scientists sit on their results until they're ready to work (I don't think they do, but that's his argument I think), and if there had been more communication and interaction between all these research cells the results would get there sooner.

The results matter, who gets it first does not. Curing this disease is much more important for the human race than the latest Ritalin or happy-pills, but that's not the case for the people who sell those - this is a problem.

Black says it in very low-brow, layman terms, as is his way, but I think his point is valid enough. Open cooperation, communication and interaction would likely get the results faster and the faster they get here, the better.

Things I'd love to be able to do on Videosift (Sift Talk Post)

Eklek says...

^you can do an advanced search and search in multiple selected channels.

To complement *nosound/mute, what about *novideo/visuals/blind (audiosifts with album art (slideshows)), I think these 2 belong to the same category as NSFW, blocked, brief, long..(and NSFE

I still don't get the twitter hate. If blogging is ok then what's wrong with micro-blogging? Personally I mostly use it as an RSS reader and the search is a nice complement to google. And reading what some real people are thinking about, assuming they have something interesting to say, can be anything from revealing to funny.

"Two of these women are alien to western civilization and do not deserve the privilege of being permitted to live in one of the most enlightened societies in history."
Can you expand on why they don't deserve to live in Canada?

Their religious faith impedes participation in Canadian society and further widens the chasms in an increasingly fractured multicultural nation, while the values they hold do not complement the impetus of the European desire to create a free and open society.

Fuck you very, very much

The Political Future of Nuclear Fusion

nickreal03 says...

This should be what Obama's Manhattan Project/man on the moon project should be. I think is doable in less than ten years if people wanted to make it happen. Renuables should also be use to complement this projects specially solar power.

This plus a Hydrogen economy will set USA/Rest of the world in a very stable direction.

Free-Market Meat Market (Blog Entry by Farhad2000)

Farhad2000 says...

My favourite:

You should contact me if you are a skinny woman. If your words are a meaningful progression of concepts rather than a series of vocalizations induced by your spinal cord for the purpose of complementing my tone of voice. If you’ve seen the meatbot, the walking automaton, the pod-people, the dense, glazy-eyed substrate through which living organisms such as myself must escape to reach air and sunlight. If you’ve realized that if speech is to be regarded as a cognitive function, technically they aren’t speaking, and you don’t have to listen.

Trailer for blankfist's movie "The Clockwise Family"

Trancecoach says...

For some reason, with all the sexual politicking evident in the movie, this trailer reminds me a bit of Mamet's Oleanna (1994).

May be taken as a complement.. Like Oleanna, may be suited for the stage...

Star Trek - The Inner Light

This is one of the rare TNG episodes that really stood out amongst the rest. It's probably my favorite episode out of them all.

Also agree with the rest. Better if it's just the flute solo or with piano complement.

New Channel Coming Soon (Sift Talk Post)

Eklek says...

Congrats again:) your sift are a nice blend of thoughtful and wicked clips:) and like me you sure care about the optimalization of the currently implemented siftpolitics! thumbs up!!

A law channel would be great, it should also include crime - breaking of the law: it would be better than to have a separate law and a crime channel.

As far as a *bio channel there would indeed be overlap with nature/eco/science, but a *health/medicine channel would be a good idea..

Talks is considered to be too broad, probably *lectures / *interviews / *debates would be possible channels.

*University would overlap with * howto and *lectures and what to include is to some degree (too?) subjective (e.g. I created 2 personal university playlists)

Fantasy is a missing genre and would nicely complement scifi, horrorshow, love, mystery, grindhouse, drugs/spacy etc.

Obama - "It's like these guys take pride in being ignorant"

Asmo says...

>> ^MINK:
thanks asmo for actually engaging.
but still, the tire filling thing is just a little soundbite he can throw out without annoying his higher ups. that's why he suggested it, rather than saying "if every american ate one less hamburger a month".....

Np dood, healthy debate is always good... =)

Yeah, I don't honestly think it mattered what he said, it was a trite little suggestion but in context it was appropriate imo.

Either which way, if meat reduction isn't on the agenda (or menu *ba dum tish*), do you prefer offshore drilling or investment in to hybrid energy (or other sources)?

Or more to the point, do you prefer a guy who coughs up tidbits of information that complement his policy or a guy that pays people to try and make a joke of it rather than pushing his own policies?

Lets face it, oil is big news, meat pollution, how many people (at least those who don't live downwind from an abbatoir) even know that it's a big problem? At least the public have their faces rubbed in the oil problem so selling a policy for change to them is going to be far easier than saying "no more prime rib for joo!!!".. = )
