Nope, no sarcasm at all... I hate online play. Although, with friends, on a LAN, that is fun, and as such, I can see that you could eventually get to that point on general online play... I guess.
I don't have the time, patience, or inclination to build up the teams/organize times to play together etc. only to end up playing a fast twitch game where this sort of bullshit taunting goes on.
I enjoy single player games with stories, I enjoy playing through crafted experiences like Bioshock, HL2 and it's sequels, Arkham Asylum etc. Or, just fun puzzle games like World of Goo. Westy, you either have an unrealistically high bar for single player games, or just don't play good ones. Personally... I'd rather AI that's trying to fit into the world, rather than playing a WW2 game and have the enemy tea bag me, or yelling 'die fags'... that breaks me out of the immersion far more than a bit of dodgy AI.
That's where my enjoyment comes from I'm afraid... I just don't find enjoyment in online gaming.
I can SEE the attraction, especially in games like Eve Online etc. where it's like living in a futuristic world... but really, that's a time investment of a few orders of magnitude higher than I can give to anything that's not productive.



I enjoy both multilayer and single player , Its just that the the story telling in single player games is UTTER SHIT . compare the stories and emotoinal impact in games to a good film or book its just depressing. also the fact that the game play in single player games is often so predictable its just annoying. I really enjoy single player games as a peace of art of a mideum thats still in its black and white without sound stage.

Evan coop instantly makes any single player game infinitely better. the technology is not really there to deliver engrossing single player games of a high sophistication , Maby as a games Designer things stick out to me more than they do other people but I can still recognize fantastic single player games but Evan the really good ones the plot is that of a TV BMovi


Here is a list of some single player games that were really good.
Half life 1 , operation flash point , shadow of the colossus. The Penumbra Series , max Payne 1 and 2. portal ,
System Shock 2, myst series.

I always find it Amusing that still Half life 1 is more advanced and natural in the way it tells its story than modern FPS games. Mirrors edge has really nice environments and some well designed levels (in terms of game play) but the story is badly written and the cut scenes are annoying.

You must play the really challenging single player games that are never predictable.

Id rather be called a fag and tee bagged than watch my AI companions walk into walls , get in the way and generally act like one of them BBC micro robots that kids learn programming with.

And really the stories and Design in single player is god awful 90% of the time. Probably only 30 or so single player games worth playing. the only one I can see being of any good coming out in the near future is the new ICO/shadow of the colossus game.

every single player game i have played recently has been embarrassingly pore. aside from that penumbra game but that's years old now.

Maby in 10-15 years time when AI is better and Developers can consistently produce quality interactive story telling that is not some quasi cinematic exsperance with game play sellotaped on then ill realy enjoy single player games. at the moment for the most part multilayer games provide far better game play , and cinema , books , TV shows provide far better story.

the only ganra that works constantly well as single player is the casual/arcade ganra but in many cases those games end up evan better with multiplayer.

I didn't know this was going to (d)evolve into an E-Peen thread, but I love that game, so here goes:

My first gaming experiences were, of course, Atari-2600 related. I still have the console and ~80 carts in my closet.

My folks bought their first computer, an Atari 4800 (lol.) I have fond memories of hand-entering the BASIC code for games, debugging them manually, and saving them to cassette tapes. We also actually purchased a phenomenal game called Lode Runner that is still emulated today.

First official console: Sega Genesis. I was unhappy with the palette "warmth", so I traded it up for a SNES. I still have that console as well. My wife and I resolved many disputes with Doctor Mario and Mortal Kombat Trilogy.

After I got out of the military, I bought my first PC, a CompuAdd 486, with which I happily played Doom, Doom2, Duke Nukem, Interstate '76, Mechwarrior (1,2), Tie Fighter, X-Wing, Warcraft, Populous, the list goes on.

It wasn't long after that my wife and I invested in a Nintendo 64, which I wasn't very pleased with. The games that we enjoyed were great, but the variety wasn't so much. We got a lot of mileage out of Mario Kart 64, Mario 64, and of course Ocarina of Time.

Disappointed with the 64, we bought a Playstation. There were a few games that became marital aides, primarily Tekken 3 and Super Puzzle Fighter. However, the console's primary purpose quickly became Spyro. I think my wife may have had a thing for that little dragon. Syro's 1-3 are still near to our hearts (I'm glad that they were all released on the PSN.)

Subsequently, we purchased a Dreamcast, primarily because of how easy it was to boot-leg games for the system. Other than the Sonic games, only Jet Set Radio stands out as a mentionable Dreamcast game. Simply fantastic.

After that, we dove into the PS2. Gran Turismo 3, 4, Jak&Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Final Fantasy XII, ICO, Shadow of the Colossus were the highlights. Oh yeah, also Odin Sphere, great game. Ew, and Shin Megami Tensei 3, that too.

Back to the PC, I had purchased a beefed up system in 2006, primarily for Half-Life 2, but also fell back in love with Team Fortress and Counter Strike. That's also when I began my on-again off-again love affair with MMO games. Final Fantasy XI, the first I'd tried, was a bitch-lover, more a 2nd job than a "fun game". Since, I've played City of Heroes, World of Warcraft, Lineage2, EVE, and (most recently) Lord of the Rings Online. In between multi-player gaming, I've spent solo-time on Oblivion, Overlord, Sims3, Bioshock, and the fantastic Fallout 3.

On the mobile front, what started out as travel-toys for my son have turned into nice gaming distractions as well. We have Nintendo DS's, and a PSP. I've put a shameful amount of time into Pokemon Pearl (played through twice fully, on third play now.) On the PSP, Patapon was a nice distraction, as was Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology.

Year before last we bought a PS3. Stand-outs are: Little Big Planet, all of the PixelJunk games, Flower, and Infamous.

That's it for my gamer's resume. Hope I get the job.

He actually did say a couple of positive things about Team Ico's Last Guardian. And the Silent Hill game.

Last Guardian is just a rehash of Ico and Colossus game. He's totally on point about one of the leads dying.

And come on. It's pretty obvious from his previous reviews that he is completely biased when it comes to anything called Silent Hill. I bet he would love Silent Hill DDR if it was made.

Colossus is well worth the time!

Has whoever write this played Manny games? the only mechanics that were "original" to boioshock felt artificial and detracted from the overall game play exsperance, (puzzles to hack things )

Im sorry if you say recent memory well that's normally anything within 20 years so that's a near redundant saying when talking about video games.

Its not a bad game but if you compare it to ,

half life , shadow of the colossus , operation flashlpoint , super Mario it just dose not stand up.

only really well executed part of the game is the first 15 minutes after that its what you would expect from a above average console/PC shooter.

Yeah, a God of War clone is exactly what came to my mind while watching this trailer. Meh.

EA Redwood Shores are the devs behind this: they debuted with Dead Space last year and unless one is a Halo and FPS-obsessed limited tosser one'd agree that it was one of the best games of the year.

That said, and taking into account that EA marketing is in overdrive for this title while we've yet to see any gameplay footage, I have serious doubt this game will live up to all the hype. Unless they borrow heavily (gameplay-wise) from Shadow of the Colossus, which they should if they plan to have any meaningful references to Alighieri's poem, it will probably be a God of War clone more than anything.

I do want to disagree with him about blaming the consumers primarily for the trend of videogame companies towards milking established franchises rather than new IP.

I gladly purchase games that reviewers rave about -- I'm a proud owner of Shadow of the Colossus, and I recommend it to anyone who likes videogames. I'm apparently one of a small band of people who bought that though, and I blame the people who "marketed" (or more accurately, refused to market) the game.

what about right before the last Colossus in Shadow of the Colossus? that was the most epic OMGWTFBBQ moment i think i have ever experienced.
