‘This is not a zoo’: Biden administration blocks filming

moonsammy says...

See, my distinct impression of the Trump administration's policies and actions surrounding immigrants at our southern border was that it... wanted them to fuck off and/or die. "Remain in Mexico" was abhorrent. Family separation was a humanitarian disaster.

What *specific* policies or actions did the Trump administration take or promote which should make me believe they cared? That they had even the tiniest shred of humanity regarding people who've suffered enormously and struggled to reach what they hoped *might be* a less shitty life for themselves and their children?

"Come in legally" is fine, so long as we live up to being the beacon of hope and freedom that we like to think we are. Which would require allowing in a LOT more refugees than the Trump admin tolerated.

Ever read the poem on the base of the Statue of Liberty? It is beautiful, and if the US can manage to live up to it for a change then perhaps we'll have made America great, for the first time.

Trump cared more than Biden.

I've always cared. Come in legally, so you wont end up trafficked and or packed in Covid infected cages.

So are you finally realizing Trump had a better plan?

The Game that is pissing off the Alt Right

JustSaying says...

Maybe the alt-right idiots should move tro germany. The first Wolfenstein is banned (still) and all following games are heavily censored or outright banned as well. And it's not just for the violence. Since Return to Castle Wolfenstein all games have removed Nazi insignia so you don't kill Nazis anymore but other made up groups instead (in RtCW the Nazis were renamed into the Wolves IIRC). The New Colossus contains all the violence in germany but no swastikas or SS runes.
What a load of Bullshit.

Star Trek Beyond - Trailer 1

nanrod says...

My solution for the people problem is I only go to movies showing on Thursday night at 10:30PM and after the movie has been out for a couple of weeks. My local theatre is called Colossus and has 22 screens including Ultra AVX, Dbox, Imax, and regular, all at different prices.

newtboy said:

Wow! Really?!? No 2 D theaters at all?!? That's nuts. Where are you located, if I may ask?
I also have trouble with the new 3D, but I intend to give SW a chance. I hope I don't have to see it a second time in 2D to actually see it. I live in N Cal., and we barely have 3D theaters here, but plenty of smaller 2D screens.
If only they would make a good quality, 4K, 3D projector at a reasonable price, I would just stay home. People in theaters suck. It's like their parents never taught them that a theater is not their living room. That's why I only see an average of 1 movie a year in theaters. I would see far more if it weren't for the other movie goers.

The Last Guardian - E3 2015 Trailer

ChaosEngine says...

It will eventually (when we can run PS4 emulators )

So are Team ICO developing this or not? It's certainly got that desaturated look of Ico and-and Shadow of the Colossus, in fact, it really does look like a PS2 game in terms of the engine.

But I care not one solitary rats arse about the engine. The animation is beautiful and the architectural design is stunning.

Ico and SotC were amazing games. They had great puzzles and genuinely engaging stories, all without a line of understandable dialog.

If this actually comes out, I will rent a PS4 to play it, and it will wreck me

A First Drive - Google's Self-Driving Car

rebuilder says...

That's going to be the time the cops (or anyone else with access) can reroute or stop a car at will, without the passengers having any say in it. Of course, taking this thinking to the logical conclusion, humans wouldn't have much input in the whole system in the first place.

I think I'm going to go watch Colossus: the Forbin project now...

ChaosEngine said:

The ultimate end IMHO, is roads that only allowing AI vehicles. Think about it, computers are much faster than humans. if you had a road where all the cars were networked, you could have high speed traffic with perfect reaction times and no human error. At that point, allowing a human driver would be dangerous.

The Effect of Islam on Science in the Middle East - 9th-12th

Revelation replaced Investigation - Nicely said.

And now, the USA is falling into the same colossus rut, not with eastern views but with Western, Christian philosophy. The US population is letting the Revelations of religion outweigh the Investigations of the Scientific Method. Infact they are going so far as to condemn the scientific Method and are trying to have it removed from schools in some states.

Alan Turing - My Favourite Scientist

Seric says...

A little background for those who are interested.

During the beginnings of WW2 the Polish saw that the Germans were amassing armies of some magnitude and were certain that they couldn't hope to fight them. So they worked on cracking the codes that the Germans were using for communication. This was a fantastic piece of mathematics and was eventually put into practice via a machine called the Bomba.

The poles handed a copy of their findings to the British intelligence through a man called Knox, who would eventually become Turing's superior at Bletchley Park. It was later found out that Knox was also a homosexual, despite being married.

The enigma machine was altered after the Bomba was made, Turing analysed the code and mathematics and created a machine known as the Bombe. This was capable of cracking the enigma code by looking for contradictions.

This machine was later re-invented as The Colossus machines by a gifted engineer, Tommy Flowers. These machines were capable of cracking an enigma message in roughly 10 minutes. By the end of the war, the British were cracking the broadcasted Enigma coded messages before the Germans could themselves as they decoded messages manually using the enigma machine.

In 1945, Turing was awarded the OBE for his wartime services. He committed suicide in 1954, although this is disputed, especially by his mother.

In 2009 as the result of a petition, a government apology was issued by Gordon Brown for the way Turing had been treated.

"Thousands of people have come together to demand justice for Alan Turing and recognition of the appalling way he was treated. While Turing was dealt with under the law of the time and we can't put the clock back, his treatment was of course utterly unfair and I am pleased to have the chance to say how deeply sorry I and we all are for what happened to him ... So on behalf of the British government, and all those who live freely thanks to Alan's work I am very proud to say: we're sorry, you deserved so much better."

I've had the chance to learn a lot about Bletchley park in my studies of computing history, and what a remarkable man Turing was.

A personal hero of mine too. *promote

Unreal Engine Tech Demo : Computer graphics of tomorrow

westy says...

We are at a place in games where the visual spectical of a game is pushed more by Creative vision than by technical vision,

this trailer fails to impress due to the fact it feels like a cheep amalgamation of film clechayes ( no dobt the visual engine is capable of grate things but only in the hands of people who can use it properly)
I mean shadow of the colossus was on bloody ps2 that game still looks fantastic.

In-terms of showing of an engines capability i would try to show a real world scene rather than a fictional one that way everyone can use there knowlage of the real world to evaluate how strong the engine performs.

as it is the bf3 screens and footage shown so far look far more impressive this unreal engin looks like a early 2000s Nvidea Tech demo.

eathor way What games need are better AI , Better faster development tools , things are very lopsided towards visuals at the moment ( in terms of large studio development priorities) if u were to say visuals were at 100 , AI is at a 5 , phisics 40 , development tools 10 .

only when it is cheep and easy to produce intricate game play will we see deeper more involving games , for example games that are truly open ended or characters that produce there own believable doilog,

Its quite bezire how its largely the low budgit indi studios that are pushing the boundaries with aspects that truly matter in terms of creating sophisticated gaming.

Funny stuff. The game itself seemed like a cool concept in need of a more fleshed-out story to me though, though I know Team Ico is all about the minimalist schtick. Going from one colossus to the other made the encounters feel like less of a reward than they might have been, to me anyway. Maybe I didn't play through far enough. I think I got to maybe the 5th colossus before I put the controller down. I might give it another go.

I know of a couple people that said they stopped playing this because the emotional tragedy of killing such a living unique creature as the colossi that ICO envisioned was too much for them. Gotta be one hell of a game if it involves you in its world that much.
Really wish they'd release their new one for the PC though: The Last Guardian. The intro video is stunning:

Yeah, I definitely got teary-eyed for a few of the collosi- especially the huge flying one, because he doesn't attack you at ALL! He's just flying around, completely harmless and ethereal and beautiful. You can't even get to him until you shoot him with your arrows.

There was another one that was a lot like a dog that made me really sad to kill as well.

Unusually aggressive snooze button. Fantastic. Love the image.

>> ^ForgedReality:

Some kind of javascript error is preventing this video from playing.
"303: Failed to load a resource: Unable to load resources: Error #2035"
And in the firebug console, it looks like the flowplayer script they use is getting incorrect variables.
edit - Oh, fuck you ZP. It's because of adblock. >:[ Assholes. And I already upvoted this before watching... Lesson learned.

With the right version of adblock that isn't an issue.

XCOM Trailer E3 2010

this looks really crappy to me

Why?

Just looks like a really generic shooter with random stuff hashed into it. the art style dose not seem very cohesive to me ether.

I Think an ideal clean 1950s look could be really good for a game setting as well for a shooter i think it is yet to be done realy well , fallout 3 and boishock both seemd quite naff to me , well into of bioshock one before the main game play kicked in was realy good and spot on but as soon as the actual game play started it was pritty rubish.

if you compare games like this to games like shadow of the colossus , portal then its just inbarrsing.
Its all down to how serouse the game takes itself , if the game is realy light harted and internaly aware that its a game and the core mechanics are fun then thats fine , you cannot make that sort of a jugment from video alone though.
