I'm not asking about the phrase "in the closet." We agree on that.
Although I would not use the word "disparaging" -- it is more deeply sad that someone feels the need to hide.
What do YOU mean by disparaging? I just realized maybe we do look at that phrase differently.
It is disparaging of our society that someone feels the need to be in the closet. It is insulting to say to someone's face "hey, you are in the closet" when they have put themselves there.
Do you read Savage Love or Dan Savage's blog? I love that guy. Potty mouth and brilliant mind -- a great combination.
I shall continue my informal survey just because I am dang curious!
let me know how the survey turns out. I'm amused that the straight woman didn't even know the phrase.
I'm curious if others think the term "in the closet" is disparaging or negative, as I do.

So I did an unofficial survey at work this afternoon.
One lesbian was totally with me -- it is fine to "out" yourself. She even said what I said -- everyone wins when people decide to leave the closet.
She also agrees with you (and me) that outing someone else is horrible.
She had no trouble with the phrase "outing herself."
The next person I asked was a straight woman. She didn't even know what I was talking about AT ALL.
I shall gather more data later.... I'm very curious about how this is going to play out....
This video will melt your brain. No CGI required.
Don't ever do that again.
/me hides in the closet.

When are double breasted suit jackets going to come back? Soon I hope - still got mine in protected covers in the back of the closet.
Grossest Virginity Loss EVER!! - (*WARNING, NSFW Content*)
K, I read Tucker Max in college. There's a much more offensive and disgusting story about a girl's first anal experience where Tucker empties the entire bottle of lube up her butt while his friend is in a bedroom closet filming it.
Too much lube, it fires out like a lube-shit volcano, his friend vomits, stumbling out of the closest from the stench, and all three of them end up tangled up in the middle of a shit-lube comforter on the ground.
Rick Santorum blames gay marriage on a TV show
Rick Santorum is soooo in the closet. I mean he changed his last name to a word that has direct links to gay sex!
Unreal Engine 4 - Infiltrator Demo
Nah, the Doom 3 palette was pitch black interspersed with the glowing eyes of demons, whose closets you have just foolishly stumbled over.
That demo (if you could really call it that) was very purdy but several things occurred to me while I was watching it. When our futuristic ninja gets busted I couldn't help but think, "Yep, I hate it when that happens" there's always one nosy douchebag who has to ruin an otherwise perfectly good infiltration.
In the future, shutting down an assembly line won't just stop the line but also blow up at least half of it, if only Henry Ford had thought of this, who knows where we would be today.
As good as this looks by the time a significant portion of the population has the hardware necessary to run this in real time we will all have moved on to Unreal Engine version 6. So none of this is especially practical for gaming purposes, it makes me wonder if they aren't trying to market this to film makers as well.
Palette looks really Doom3ish.
Psychedelic animated anti-drug PSA
wa8it so .. the carrot betrayed him for not passing the doob, and then the aspirin and antibiotic were like, hey.. come with us we are gonna show you some shit... my dude goes hey, im not sure bout this door here... and then heroin zombies grab him to hangout in a closet.
Neil deGrasse Tyson: We Live in a Cosmic Shooting Gallery
Not according to David Thompson, a NASA astrophysicist and deputy project director on the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope who compares the risk to Earth from a future gamma-ray burst to "the danger I might face if I found a polar bear in my closet in Bowie, Maryland. It could happen, but it is so unlikely that it is not worth worrying about."
There's a greater chance that one (or more) of the stars within about 6000 light years or so could give off a gamma ray burst that would wipe out any life in the solar system, no matter where we hid it. It's been postulated the previous-to-the-Yucatan-asteroid large scale die-offs could have happened due to GRB.
What To Do While Waiting For Police
Since when is a gun the ONLY way to protect yourself? Buy a taser, buy a baseball bat, buy a billy-club. Invest in self-defense classes. Spend the $1000 on better locks or a thicker door.
You want to know what to do if someone burglarizes your house if you don't have a gun? Same as if you do have a gun... you're on your own, and you do your best to prevent yourself from being killed. If that means hiding in a closet, it's better that than dead.
PS4 Announcement - Abridged Version
I like the idea of a touch pad on the controller that isn't a gimmick (i.e. wiiu controller, which as of now can only use one touch screen).
If I could toss all my home theater crap in a closet so I never have to see it again, I would. (if I didn't have to fill my closet with snowgear I would have done this.) But I look at a spending $600- $800 on a console as crazy. If I'm going to buy something I need the games, better cords, more controllers, some memory card i won't use, more games, strat guides, etc.. Gosh that is expensive, who does that?!
Then I look to my "new" computer which it will be used to surf here and some games --that's it. It currently sits in boxes. The new box is halfway built, still lacking a mobo/ram/psu and I have about $800 invested in it. Probably going to dump easily another 400 to 500 in it, but that okay in my messed-up-I-need-this-to-live-mind.
because that is sane.
I'm really surprised so many people actually give that big a shit about how the console actually looks. Seriously, how often do you sit and just stare at the console itself?
I've found myself migrating from my 360 to the PS3, it's just a better system for gaming. You can buy most new releases online (Games on Demand is pathetic), you don't have to pay for MP, you don't have to put up with MS's constant dashboard changes that are consistently awful, nor put up with superfluous BS like Avatars and the Welcome screen.
The only thing I don't like is the controller, and the PS4's controller looks great (except the stupid Share button), so I'm quite excited for the PS4, but also keen to see what MS will be offering and if they'll cock it up
Anti-Gay Pastors and Politicians Who Turn Out To Be Gay
Its time for Republicans to come out of the closet.
Colin Powell calls out Republican racism
A lot of times, a little empathy is all it takes for a conservative to come around. I've heard many stories of conservatives changing their views on minorities after meeting minorities, changing their views on abortion after a loved one gets an abortion, changing their views gay marriage after a loved one comes out of the closet, etc.
I think the GOP's racism hit home for Powell, and opened his eyes to other problems in the Republican party.
The Science of the "Friend Zone" - Vsauce
Honestly I thought tying them together would make it harder for them to escape from the broom closet, my bad.
The real problem is that we've some more of the middle-ground that tied the two extremes together.
Chris Rock, Tom Hanks and "the N word" - Jonathan Ross - BBC
I'm with Louis CK, I am offended by white people using the phrase "N-Word" instead of obeying contextual license with regard to language. Some douchebag on this site with head firmly inserted in ass, saw to it that I was banned on the grounds of "inflammatory" use of what he supposed to be an inferred jab at him personally (and black folks in-general) . I used the term "monkey" referring to humans in general nad I had no idea the guy was a black man. I did however know he was a fucking asshole, in general). The mob ruled with 2 votes to ban me, and I could not come to my own defense because my account was suspended already.
How fucking fair was that, monkey-boy??!
I agree, that the word has become less-than-fashionable, even among the AA community but seriously people, it's 2012 and in context a word has meaning and power as it sits, or you simply turn it into whatever the fuck suits your particular perspective.
So if simply seeing the word "nigger" (here, I'll type it bigger for you because it's easier to see and bigger rhymes with "NIGGER") sends your defective brain in the direction of judgement or racism, you're fucking developmentally-disabled and the schools you went to were shit. I love the word because it makes all you closeted racist's blood boil when you even think of it! I don't use it outside of meaningful context and I refuse to say , "THE "N" word because: the white people who invented it also invented the word "nigger" and just thinking of the phrase and the meaning behind it makes me embarrassed to be a white man.
But seriously, love white people. I think everyone should own one.
