Carmack genuinely one of my heroes. "Masters of DOOM" is a terrific book if you're interested in the 3D renaissance of 90s PC gaming.
DOOM ruled. See my mods: http://zimage.com/~ant/antfarm/files/doom2/j2doom/j2doom.html
Awesome. That's pretty hardcore.

I really wish people would just get back into the original Quake. Not many people play it online but I still think the multiplayer game mechanics as well as the blocky, dark, graphics are better than nearly all multiplayer games to this day. I've been playing it here and there the past couple of weeks but it's usually only a couple of people from Europe.
I definitely enjoy the old arcadey shooters more than the pseudo-realistic shooters that are everywhere now, but I no longer have the reflexes required to kick ass at them.
Me too. I replayed some old games and ugh I suck in them. LOL! I don't play new computer games anymore, even demos nad betas (very rare) due to lack of free times and motivations. I do play Flash games as you can see on AQFL.net.

Definitely. I hate the entire concept of "Next-Gen" which is somewhat bullshit anyway because of making games cross-platform with consoles. But, I really don't appreciate peoples critiques on graphics most of the time. I love all sorts of eras/engines why not just update games like Doom & Quake with modern net-code? I'll pay $5 on steam! Haha!

Dude, I wished people would go back to DOOM 1 and 2. Get off my lawn.

Absolutely! Most visceral (and imo best) multiplayer game ever made.

Also, Carmack talking math with this guy is hilarious. I would have done the same thing... "Hmmm oh (I have no idea of what you're talking about - ShgzjhsdStokes Equations?) Now, getting back to the hardware settings."
Euclideon Island Demo 2011
Man, I didn't know that Alex Winter from Bill & Ted's Excellent adventure was into tech this much.

Wow. What an infuriating voice.
John Carmack says: "Re Euclideon, no chance of a game on current gen systems, but maybe several years from now. Production issues will be challenging."

QuakeWorld (QW) Launch Event - 1996
Would love if Carmack did a talk like this every year. "The STATE of 3D Gaming"
RAGE - Gameplay Trailer
Tired old school gameplay right down to the glowing pick ups and melee/pistol/shotgun/sms blah blah weapons. I'll save myself $60 by going through a box with all my old games I have in my closet that's been untouched for 5 years. Carmack just never changes.

meh. rage is going to be just another engine seller. without romero carmack is just some talented programmer, not a game designer.
I've never really drank the Romero Coolaid. Romero needs to be surrounded by a highly critical team who will prevent him from putting every stupid idea he has into a game, regardless of whether or not it works well. His post-id career really illustrates this point.
Carmack, as far as I can remember, has never been a designer on any of their games.
