I don't think Japan is very quick or willing to make accurate death toll estimates. I was in the Kobe earthquake of 1995. It took them weeks to get even in the correct neighborhood for casualty numbers. (thousands rather than hundreds). I expect the same to be true here. The Japanese government is reluctant to cough up very bad news.

Consider that in a time when Japan's population was a small fraction of what it is today, the 1923 Tokyo Earthquake killed over 100,000 people and measured only 7.9 in magnitude.

I'm very sad to say that I expect the final death toll from the current earthquake and tsunami devastation to be close to this number.

>> ^honkeytonk73:

The general Japanese civilian population at the time was poor, starving and consisted mostly old men, women, and children. All males of 'fighting age' or capacity were either dead, or in the military. The citizenry's weapons of choice that were available to them were... brooms, shovels, and sticks. This doesn't overshadow the threat the emperor, the empire and his military machine posed. However, this doesn't negate the fact that the country was already defeated by the time the A-bombs were dropped.

It doesn't matter if the civilian population was already defeated, because the Japanese military did not give a shit about the lives or the suffering of civilians, either at home, or abroad. The ferocity of the resistance experienced in the pacific theater, the failed coup to stop emperor from surrendering, holdouts well into 1970s, and the Japanese refusal to accept the Postdam declaration even after the first bomb was dropped highlights the determination of the Imperial Army. The will of the Imperial Army had to be broken.

A direct invasion of the Japanese mainland would have resulted in civilian casualties orders of magnitudes greater than from bombing alone, judging from the Battle of Okinawa. Conventional bombing of Japan produced far more damage and casualties than the two atomic bombs combined, yet had no effect on influencing the Japanese to surrender. The use of atomic weapons was absolutely justified and was not just an international show of force.

The responsibility for the deaths of those killed by the bombings, as well as all civilians in the pacific theater rests squarely on the shoulders of Hirohito and the Japanese military, many of whom, unlike their Nazi counterparts, went unpunished for their crimes.

And here is a little something from wiki that I read about earlier on yahoo.

Gorilla™ Glass

Corning’s Gorilla™ Glass is a high-strength alkali-aluminosilicate thin sheet glass used as a protective cover glass for high-end display devices such as notebook PCs, televisions, and mobile phones.[2] Originally invented in 1962, it did not find commercial applications until 2008.[3]
In October 2009, Motion’s C5 and F5 line of Rugged Tablet PCs became the first to feature the Gorilla™ Glass.[4] Later in March 2010, Corning announced that Gorilla™ Glass' use in the Japanese cell phone market.[5] Corning's next leap was a few days later, March 15, 2010 was incorporating the Gorilla Glass into the LG x300 Ultra-thin Mobile PC; which unveiled at the 2010 CES Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada [6][7]
Corning attributes the choice of Gorilla™ Glass superiority not only for "unparalleled damage resistance and protection" but:
"Thinner form factor: Gorilla™ Glass retains its performance advantage over standard chemically strengthened substrates even when used in thin form factors. Currently, Gorilla™ Glass is available as-drawn in thicknesses ranging from .5 mm – 2.0 mm.
Pristine surface quality: Because it is formed using Corning’s proprietary fusion process, Gorilla™ Glass offers the same high-quality pristine surface available with all of our high-technology display substrates. This feature offers the ability to use the glass “as drawn,” eliminating lapping and polishing processes which can introduce surface damage.
Compliance with environmental standards: Gorilla™ Glass is compliant with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS). It contains no heavy metals, making it an ideal component for devices engineered to meet environmental standards.
Compatibility with touch screen devices: Gorilla™ Glass can be used as a protective cover sheet for touch screen devices without impeding the functionality of the device. Reliable strength is important for these types of devices that function in response to pressure being applied to the glass.
Available with an easy-to-clean, wear-resistant coating: Customers can specify a version of Gorilla™ Glass with a special coating, making it easier to clean than other cover glasses. This is especially useful for devices that function by touch."[8]
In addition to its uses for mobile phones such as the Motorola Droidx[9], Corning expect increasing usage in television screens starting in 2011, with a projected market of $1 billion in 2011.[10][11]

ROAST X: ITS XTREME!!!! (Parody Talk Post)

dotdude says...

Gee folks, it’s beginning to smell a bit gamey in here and I know it’s not siftbot. As for the farting cat, it’s lurking somewhere close to the front page just waiting to pounce yet again.

Rasch187 is quite proud of his hunting trophies, but he’s too humble to brag about this one.

At the last roast Obsidianfire threatened to tear our cheeks.
At this one rasch187 has threatened to simply kill us and then defile our bodies.
So, I guess the next roastee will threaten us with weapons of mass destruction . . . and we can guess what that means.

You know, this is the second time a roastee has mentioned a fear related to the Amazon River. Sure piranhas are ferocious fish, but that is still a fear that is located far away from most of us.

This whole obsession with hats made wonder if rasch187 was hiding a conehead. But then I remembered coneheads usually say they’re French. Having viewed the photo he shared, I know that he has no cone. I guess “hat hair” is not an issue either.

Rasch187 began hiking at the suggestion of a woman he tried to talk to at local pub on ladies' night. I believe he misunderstood her sentiments.

Here are a couple of rasch187’s prized prints. Aren’t you just jealous of his collection?!?

While conducting my research I ran across his favorite character from Futurama and his favorite Batman villain.

And lastly here’s a video dedicated to our dapper roastee.
