Big Budget Hollywood Movie About Noah's Ark with Russel Crow

Chairman_woo says...

You sir clearly do not fully understand the nature of entropy (and nor does about 95% of the human race so you can be forgiven there).

You have however stumbled into making a genuinely worthwhile point here (though I must state I think for completely the wrong reasons).

The idea that the universe inevitably moves towards a complete "heat death" is I think incorrect, it fails to account for the effect of ever increasing complexity within the closed systems the universe produces (i.e. evolution which applies as much cosmically as it does to organic life on earth).

If the universe remained with no more complexity than it currently has then yes everything would eventually "burn out" and spread the energy of the universe so thinly that everything would cease to work (if only on a space-time level).

But the nature of the universe does not remain static, it creates ever more complex and actuated systems dialectically. Energies>Particles>Compounds>Nebulae>Stars>Planets>Organisms>Unconsciousness>Consciousness>???>God! (not intended to be an exhaustive list it's purely for illustration)

Evolution does trump entropy IMHO but this is largely because the actual laws of entropy are crazy complicated to understand and most people (including to some extent myself) don;t fully understand the subtleties of how it really works.

If nothing else; to say that the whole universe eventually enters a state of complete entropy assumes that every complex closed system that does or ever will exist will eventually break down. This is far from a forgone conclusion, we alone as evolving conscious creatures are capable of developing means to circumvent or even prevent this. Let alone what other wonders we have yet to observe or the universe has yet to manifest!

In conclusion: The Universe evolves until it reaches God (or dies trying ). God does not then create the universe but rather commits suicide (what else is God to do? Eternity is a very long time for someone that already knows and has done everything...). Process repeats ad infinitum.

Makes a lot more sense that way around don't you think? (and no ancient books of dubious origin need ever be consulted to derive it either)

Saying God created the universe only leaves you with more questions which by their very nature cannot be answered. We would have to be God itself to ever answer them, so we are left with a judgement call. No logical certainty, only faith.

This way around we can by pure rationalism and empiricism arrive at an explanation of how the universe might evolve God via ever increasing complexity of consciousness and actualisation (true post-humans alone would be like demi-gods, it's not a huge leap to keep taking this idea further)

Further to that Ontological mathematics (that is to say "really real mathematics") can assess a framework to understand how the universe itself came to be (we can arguably go pre-big bang with this but that's always going to be a controversial idea here).

^ Now I might be wrong about some or even all of that but it is at least a reductive argument. Using God as an explanation for anything without first explaining God is always going to be a circular argument. If your going to use circular logic you can prove basically anything you feel like!

Transcript from Reddit:
I translated most of the exchange between the people in the video. It starts at 0:41.
Robber: Stop! Stop, stop, stop. Give me the alarm!
Victim: Okay, okay.
Robber: Give me the alarm, give me the alarm!
Robber points the gun at victims head.
Victim: It's here, it's here.
Robber: Fuck, hurry!
Victim: It's right here, it's right here!
Victim hands over the alarm system key.
Victim: You can take it away, you can take it away!
Other robber approaches say something inaudible.
Victim: No man, I'm not armed.
Robber #2: What?
Victim: I don't have any gun on me, I'm not a cop.
Robber #2 to Robber: Let's go, let's go.
Victim: You guys can take it, take it.
Cop approaches Robber and BAM! BAM! (or pew! pew!, whatever you prefer)
Robber: Ouch! Fuck!
Victim: Thank you police! Thank you police! Thanks a lot!
Victim: Now you're gonna rob in hell. You're not gonna take away my bike. You're not gonna take it, thank god.
Victim put's helmet on the ground.
Inaudible exchange between victim and cop.
Another cop in black t-shirt steps in and talks to cop hero.
Black tshirt cop: I work for "Guarda". (a division of the police department) Are you a captain?
Cop gets in the car.
Victim: Now you're gonna rob in hell you son of a bitch.
Robber (whining): I got shot!
Victim (pissed off): You go fuck yourself! You're the one pointing gun at other people's face!
Robber: Oh, I'm gonna die.
Victim: You sure will! You should have already! Son of a bitch.
Robber inaudible, apparently asks someone to get him something to drink.
Victim: You're gonna drink in hell! You're gonna drink the devil!
Victim to other people around: Fuck, I'm going on my way and this asshole comes to rob me.
Victim pick up the helmet.
Victim (to camera): I'm lucky it's still recording. They tried to rob me here.
Victim (on the phone): Just come over here. This guy just tried to rob me and the cop shot him. Come quickly. Just don't tell dad. Come quickly!
Victim hangs up.
Victim: You have to live so you can get beat up in jail!
Victim (to himself): Fucking idiot.
Robber: I'm dying!
Victim: Yeah, you're supposed to! You have to get fucked. You're not the one that likes to rob? Getting a job is something you don't want to, right?! Do you have any idea how much I'm working to pay for this motorcycle?! You have no idea, right! And then you take it away easily!
Victim: And you're lucky that I wanted to get your buddy as well! But don't worry because he's gonna get caught.
Guy in blue t-shirt to victim: Was it red or black that one?
Victim: Red.
Victim (to some cop): Guy wasn't wearing a helmet but I noticed when I looked in the mirror they were up to no good.
Guy in blue t-shit starts patting down the robber.
Robber: Keep your hands off me! Fuck.
Blue t-shit guy reaches for something and hands it over to cop.
Robber to cop: I'm dying sir!
Victim: Oh now you say "sir" right?! You first scare the shit out of other people and now it's all "sir". "Sir" my ass buddy! Now you're gonna get fucked up in hell.
Vicim: How about your buddy? You see. He ran away!
Victim: You wanted to ride some Hornet, right?! (flips off) Here, now you're gonna ride a hornet in hell! (Hornet is a Honda model)
Victim picks up camera
Victim: Now you see this guy. He was going to rob me, now got all fucked up. The cops shot him.

Those were the days! That used to be the way it was in the UK as well, but not any more, unfortunately.

There are so many adverts on TV over here now, trying to get people to sue each other, their workplace or the local council.

Canadian-News-Anchors-Warning-To-Americans

Shepppard says...

Who are you arguing with? Perhaps you should just go back to lurking. @Buck is a Canadian, so your "you right wing Americans" comment shouldn't be directed at him, and the rest of your comment is ridiculous. Seriously man, punctuation is your friend.

Honestly, from the comments alone, i've picked up the basic story. Guys house is being hit by arsonists, guy responds by shooting a firearm in the direction of the attackers. What I don't know, however, is if he had his restricted firearms license to own the gun in question. If he did, charges were apparently dropped against him anyway, so it doesn't matter. If he did NOT, then the fact that he was defending himself with an ILLEGAL firearm becomes the main problem here.

Now, a quick google-fu session later, and I've concluded that the news anchor is "Brian Lilley", who works for sun news, based out of OTTAWA. So we're gonna go ahead and put this BACK in *Canada, and I would request to @chingalera reverts the title back to what it was, being as this has nothing to do with fox news whatsoever.

Actually, I have read the details in the case, Canada is NOT a free for all where you can do whatever you want because you think you know better than everyone else. CANADA IS NOT AMERICA. You should properly store your firearms. There should be a trial regarding these charges, and if the situation (gun instructor, imminent threat to life) warrant that the charges be DROPPED in this case, I would find that to be fair. However, regulations such as these stop assholes from keeping their heat ready just in case they need to rapidly without thinking end a human life. You right wing Americans make me sick how you see everything in black and white, you've swallowed every lie told to you by the gun manufacturers and your right wing politicians you don't know how to see past your own blurring ignorance. But of course.... *I* must be wrong, and not the right wing wannabes at the SUN. LOL. Which is why the top search results for the story are all right wing papers beating the drums of war.

Let's talk about *Promote (Sift Talk Post)

spoco2 says...

I too dislike the new promote mechanic. I had no issue previously with the number of promoted videos that were there.

I've just in the last week or so allowed myself to 'discover' reddit, and now I'm spending time there that I used to spend here... and so I offer some comparisons:

Videosift Pros:

* Huge pro is the lack of duplicates. Repetitive content on reddit is really quite tiresome

* Tight community, we 'know' each other moreso than the huge mass that is Reddit

Videosift Cons:

* As of the update in particular, a loss of focus on comments. It used to be that the number of comments and link to them was large and below the text description of the video, now it's gone from there and only shown as a tiny icon under the thumbnail. I'm FAR less drawn to the comment sections here now, I just don't notice the link any more.

* The promote system used to be a great way to get an old video and bring it back to people's attention, and without fear of stuffing up other people's videos that were there. I used to wait if there were already heaps sitting in there, for a time when it was less crowded, and I think this worked well. Now that there are always three videos there there's no real idea of how 'busy' it is, and I'm not going to check how long any of them have been up there, that's 'work' to find out. Basically it's broken. A queue system where you're told that your video has not yet made it to the front page, but is queued to be shown in 'x' hours or minutes would be great. Then any video gets a minimum of time in the promote spot, but can potentially stay up there longer if no videos are in the queue. And yes, the way they're currently displayed is lacking compared to 'normal' videos.

The main reason I really come to videosift is for the discussions, and with them being pushed to the back now in this design, I am feeling less and less inclined to come by.

VideoSift 5.0 Launch! (Sift Talk Post)

Shepppard says...

Unintentional comment quoting is fixed.

The user listings in the Talk sidebar are fixed.

@doogle - You can see comments in video listings by clicking the little icon under the video. You can "minimize" the video by clicking "minimize" once it's expanded in a listing. You can expand video descriptions inline on video listing pages without loading the video page.

@dotdude - Lounge is under the Sift Talk tab now. Existing charters need do nothing.

This is all from @lucky760 on the bug thead. Not sure how to take a quote from there and put it here now.

Tim Shoots His Thumb Off on Doomsday Preppers Shooting

CaptainObvious says...

The most important thing to have when it hits the fan is a community. No family is going to do well without the help and support of their community no matter how many guns and bullets you have. Gun ownership in America is over 40% I think (or close to that) - so EVERYONE is going to be packing in bad times. Its going to be about trust and community - that's where the true power of defense is going to be.

Guns (and cars) are very unforgiving, you have to have proper training and a uncompromising level of safety when you have them out.

The family in this clip had no business firing those guns - especially the kids - (I saw numerous safety violations) and if you watch several of the other episodes you get to see some pretty horrendous gun handling that would make anyone cringe (def a safety hazard).

That being said, I personally have pulled a gun twice in self defense (once in uniform) and once as a civilian. I would probably not be here now if I had not been carrying.

I don't want to be labelled pro-gun as I see both sides of the issue, and I also have fear of the "idiots" out there, including the ones driving big ass pickup trucks tailgating me inches away while I am driving my entire family.

Idiots are a danger with or without a gun.

Stupidity kills.
