Not anymore : Syria how it is!!

petpeeved says...

I wish this conflict were as simple as the courageous young woman reporter in this video portrays it but it doesn't take much research to discover that the FSA is increasingly being co-opted by anything BUT pro-democracy elements, namely Islamic jihadists allied with al-Qaeda.

For example:

"Hundreds of fighters under the command of the opposition Free Syrian Army (FSA) have reportedly switched allegiance to al-Qaeda-aligned groups, in a move described as a huge blow to moderate rebel forces.

Activists and military sources have told Al Jazeera that the 11th Division - one of the biggest FSA brigades - has switched allegiance to the al-Nusra Front in Raqqah province, a border province with Turkey.

A video was uploaded to YouTube on Thursday purporting to show members of the 11th Division parading through Raqqah with Nusra fighters.

In the video clip, a voice can be heard saying in Arabic, "Raqqah ... September 19, 2013 ... The convoy of Nusra ... God is great ... Nusra in Raqqah province."

The switch, if confirmed, tightens Nusra's control of Raqqah just days after the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) attacked members of the Free Syrian Army in Azaz, on the border with Turkey.

The Reuters news agency, citing sources inside Syria, also reported that entire units of the FSA had joined Nusra and the ISIS in recent days.

The Raqqah Revolutionaries - which is part of the 11th Division - has about 750 fighters in total, according to a source close to al-Qaeda linked forces.

Abdulhamid Zakarya, military spokesman of Chiefs of Staff of the FSA, denied that Division 11 had joined Nusra. However, he said it had signed an agreement to collaborate in military operations.

In a separate statement, the FSA also condemned the ISIS for its actions in Azaz, saying it was going against the principles of the Syrian revolution.

“ISIS no longer fights the Assad regime. Rather, it is strengthening its positions in liberated areas at the expense of the safety of civilians. ISIS is inflicting on the people the same suppression of the Baath party and the Assad regime.”

Anita McNaught, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Antakya in neighbouring Turkey, said that if proved true, the switches of allegiance would be a serious blow to the FSA's strength, and could have significant implications outside of Syria.

The US State Department designated Al Nusrah Front a terrorist organisation on 11 December 2012. There are financial sanctions in place.

"This means that the FSA has suddenly lost serious amounts of loyal fighters ... it's basically being swallowed up by Nusra," she said, adding that it would be very difficult for the West to support a rebel army dominated and commanded by al-Qaeda linked groups."

Make Your Characters Straight - or You're Not Published

Porksandwich says...

There are plenty of books that I've read where the characters seem to be bisexual and constantly flirt with the idea, especially female characters. I find it to be rather annoying when it comes up so often in the books that it overshadows the story or in some cases becomes the story.

Try reading Laurel K. Hamilton, that author went off the deep end with her character Anita Blake, around book 9 or 10, she just stops with the teasing and has her sleeping with everything and everyone. It got really tedious reading through the book or two following 10, so I stopped reading the series. Plus the books just kept getting shorter and shorter when I saw her new books released. They went from 250-400 pages to about 150 and complaints full of the sex in the book taking up too much of the content.

These guys could probably find another place to publish. I mean after all Laurel K Hamilton delves into beastiality, criticizing her readers for being prudes when they get tired of story turning into her weird sex imaginings.

Well, I'm glad at least you are watching the video. It's very old. A lot has changed. It's crazy to me that when we are confronted with the scientific reality that organs, tissue and even entire living creatures have been and continue to be brought back from a state of cryogenic preservation, that one would think reviving a human brain with identity critical brain mass intact is some sort of scam. When you see them say "Anita is doing great" it is because they view Anita as a patient awaiting resuscitation, not as a corpse.

Again, don't get me wrong. If you asked me if I would take this service for free over being buried or cremated, sure. It is the expense v the actual science that I object to. It is a waste of money plain and simple.

The whole "Anita is doing great" is symptomatic of the delusional state under which the people who run this place are operating. Are they preserving organic matter that may be able to be cloned using some science-fictiony method in the far far far future? Sure. Are they actually "preserving humans so that they can be reanimated" no. I just keep going back to the hamburger analogy. Anita has been butchered. The people involved in these non-medical procedures are not doctors for the most part and there are absolutely no studies to show that these methods work.

I realize that Alcor (and I assume their competitor) bathe themselves in scientific language and allusions, but the fact remains that the procedures they are doing are not based in the scientific method. They clearly state that they are counting on nanotechnology (as well as other advances) that doesn't exist to repair damage that is pretty much irreversible to our present understanding. This is tantamount to me saying that with all certainty there will be warp-speed or transporters in the future.

Yes, I realize that many things in science were once science fiction, but there are both practical and scientific limits to consider. The science I will leave to the scientist, the practical stuff, I feel is enough to realize that this isn't worth what they are charging. There is no way that Alcor will exist long enough for science to catch up with what would be necessary to "revive" the material they are storing. 35 years is a flash in the pan when it comes to the type of advances that would be necessary to do anything useful with the meat in their freezers.

"Anita is doing great!"

LOL

Dude, she's dead, decapitated and frozen, I beg to differ on her current state!

Sorry for the constant updates but it is a long video. I have to say towards the end I got kind of pissed off... it REALLY does come off like a scam. They pray on people who either fear death or are future-enthusiasts.

I mean don't get me wrong. If you offered me this as a method of burial free of cost, I'd take it in a second over being buried in the earth or burned. I really think the dead body is very unlikely to be revived, but hell I'd sign up on the off-chance that some A.I.-esque cloning were possible one the aliens invade us.

Still I have to be realistic and this just smacks of money-making. They don't pay many of their employees who are involved in chopping up and preserving bodies... real suspect.

True Blood - Bill & Jessica

I gotta say, I tried to watch this show. Ordered the first season on DVD from Netflix. Canceled it all after the first DVD. It's just plain awful. Poor acting, poor writing, poor effects. I saw about three good scenes...each of which I'd already seen as clips.

Is there ever going to be a decent vampire show? I vote for a good treatment of the Anita Blake series.

*controversy.

From the Time article linked above (the other side of the story is that the president's enemies did it to make him look bad... a bit of a stretch, but you wonder - a conspiracy to stop a leftist? Hmm....).

"Colom has said the Rosenberg video is part of a right-wing conspiracy designed to destabilize the government and ultimately bring him down. In a broadcast interview, he suggested that Rosenberg was coerced into making the video. Colom pointed to a radio journalist, Mario David Garcia, as the key link to the conspiracy. Garcia, a presidential candidate for an ultra-right-wing party in the 1980s, told TIME he helped Rosenberg record the video in his office the week before the murder. "It's outrageous. There was never any coercion," Garcia says. "I even left the office while he was recording the video." Garcia says Rosenberg came to him for help and to appear on Garcia's radio show but changed his mind and decided to record the video. (Read a story about the turmoil in Guatemala in the 1980s.)

Nevertheless, Colom supporters have seized the conspiracy theory to defend the President. "We're here in support of our President and against these lies trying to bring him down," said Anita Lopez, 32, as she rallied in front of the presidential palace on Wednesday. Students of the left-leaning public university and indigenous Mayans joined her. Many said the government bused them to the city from the suburbs.

Steps away, thousands of protesters, including students from right-leaning private universities, marched in front of the presidential palace, carrying signs calling Colom an "assassin" and demanding his resignation. The competing protests are the most visible sign of a politically charged environment that has the potential to cause Colom to resign, Isaacs says. "This country has for so long been paralyzed by the pervasive violence and the potent mix of gangs and narcotraffickers," she says. "Now that paralysis has turned into rage. And if these demonstrations pick up momentum, they could have a snowball effect.""

Local News Birthday Wishes Failure

I had a history teacher named Miss Kelly. She had teased hair and wore too much make up, and the kids used to joke about how she looked like a pornstar from the 80's. One day while she was out of the room some kids were snooping around and saw some mail on her desk with her maiden name on it: Anita Dick. Kids can be so cruel.
