How to calm a Norwegian baby
Yeah, apparently the most disturbing things for new bubs is the complete lack of the loud ambient noises (since liquid transmits sound better to the ear drum) of the mother's digestive tract constantly gurgling away...
Sorta funny though that black metal resembles the noise produced by a busy colon enough to calm the bub down. =)
Pink Floyd - Cluster One
Yeah, I like Floyd but I prefer the actual band Cluster for my ambient space-out-scapes. Man, Germany just had that whole drugged out space-age thing down pat.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - In Game trailer
I want to like this game, because Morrowind was nearly a religious experience for me, but... what is particularly impressive about this? The graphics don't look great to me. Everything is too shiny and aliased. The character design seemed uninspired. The protagonist looks like his mother dressed him with hand-me-downs. The pieces of environment, buildings, and characters don't seem to fit together particularly well (lack of ambient occlusion? I don't know...)
I hope I'm wrong and the game is amazing, and the shiny graphics has no bearing on that.
The Rise and Fall of LSD: Documentary on Acid
it is an amazing thing. an amazing thing I'll probably never take again - but I did get to see a youtube life-time timelapse video of myself when I looked in the mirror and my yard looked like mars until the fences and buildings started sinking into the ground and the bottom floor of my entire apartment building popped out like a desk drawer, it was like watching a storm coming in - the sound of the city around me wasn't a sound anymore but sort of this whispy buzzing feeling. For a while I thought I was just listening to some ambient loop which was the lively ambiance of the city blocks around me, it was really confusing. Then I tried to eat a burrito... which ended up being like one of those funny anti-lsd commercials from the 60's - it didn't talk to me it just looked so disgustingly beautiful that I could not even enjoy one of my favorite staples, haha! My burrito looked like it might if it were on the Ren & Stimpy show. I remember trying to read something on my computer screen but all I could see were THE's. Tens of THE's sticking out at me. If I ever do it again I'll make sure to bring pills for the later portion of the trip which sort of got on my nerves.
That being said, in my humble opinion everyone should be encouraged to muster up their positive energies and take the splurge into this strange world in your head at least once.
Laptops Can Cause 'Toasted Skin Syndrome'
The infertility is caused by the ambient heat generated by the laptop. The function of the scrotum is to keep the testicles at a slightly lower temperature than the rest of the body. This lower temperature is more ideal for spermatogenesis, and anything that alters that temperature homeostasis is bound to have negative effects on sperm production.
The cancer risk? I'd like to see the medical journal that proved this and look at their numbers to see what kind of confidence interval and power they're working with to try and prove this. Honestly almost everything can be linked to causing cancer, and from my understanding of this they probably are linking long-term physical damage (ie. Toasted Skin Syndrome) and how that can lead to faster cell turnover which can increase cancer risk.
Everly Brothers - All I Have To Do Is Dream
This is one of those songs that if you slowed it down a little and added in some ambient effects, it'd be that creepy song you hear as the camera pans down into a serial killer's basement.

So...UPVOTE!
The Energy Problem and How to Solve it - MIT Prof Nocera
Almost all energy consumed by households is avoidable waste:
* think about the way you fry eggs. 99% of the heat from the burner is going into the air, not into the eggs. This should be solved by using small device that is well insulated on all sides and has an internal heating coil.
* Ovens have a high heat capacity and shitty insulation. More energy is wasted on heating up the oven itself than actually goes into the food. This could be solved by lining the inside of the oven with silica aerogel instead of metal. If an oven is properly insulated it will not feel very warm to the touch on the outside, even after being on for an hour.
* Most of your heating and cooling energy leaks out the windows -- if their inside surface feels significantly above or below ambient during extreme weather, your heating and cooling energy is being wasted and hemorrhaging out the windows. It would literally save energy to have a webcam on the roof and display that image on an LCD inside instead of having windows, if you live in a climate with extreme temperatures (especially in cold climates, as the energy used for the LCD would contribute to heating the house). All ventilation needs can be accomplished through a small portal with a fan (and a heat exchanger, of course).
* Hot water is produced very wastefully by just dumping energy into it instead of using a thermodynamic cycle to transfer heat and produce something cold as a byproduct. Hot water could be co-produced with cold water for AC / Refrigeration much more efficiently than doing them all separately.
* Hot water goes down the drain. This should at least go through a heat exchanger, which would dramatically lessen the amount of work that has to be done to heat up new hot water. A 7 Liter per minute showerhead putting water 30 degrees F above ambient down the drain is wasting over 8135 watts as long as it is running. However, I don't know of any houses yet designed with a heat exchanger between the shower drain water and the intake of the water heater.
* Fluorescent lights. Duh. Incandescent bulbs should be banned.
* Freezers built with the door on the top will waste much less energy to the convection of air when opened, for obvious reasons.
Here ends the lifestyle-neutral list of suggestions. The following would involve sacrificing something:
* Reduce excessive lighting -- if people wouldn't fuck up their retinas by driving just after sunrise or just before sunset, or seeing specular reflections of the sun on shiny cars and buildings outdoors, they wouldn't need such bright lights indoors. A 1 watt LED is plenty for reading. Sunlight could be used in the daytime instead of artificial lights.

Half A Million Asteroid Discoveries Over 30 Years
The *music is 'Transgenic' by Trifonic (http://www.amazon.com/Emergence-Trifonic/dp/B0013MTJUQ/)>> ^kceaton1:
Anybody know what the ambient music in the background is? I've looked at the main post on youtube and there is no mention.

Toronto Police punch reporter in the face twice at G20
>> ^vlsd:
first off, the reporter was there before the police started arresting and shoving people. second, i can't believe you're advocating that the press should be intimidated by any sort of violence. that is the quickest and surest way to creating a police state.
>> ^Beefpile:
OK so there's a massive dogpile of police arresting people while being pushed, shoved, and yelled at... and this reporter decides to run into them with a camera. BRILLIANT. Why would anyone do that, I wonder? Was it because if you throw yourself in a chaotic moment like that, there is a good chance you will be injured either on purpose or by mistake? Did he want to be injured so that he could post police hate all over the internet?
I didn't advocate that press should be intimidated by violence. That's just something you assumed. I will say though, that he could have gotten a better view of the violence a few feet away. He jumped into the dogpile for a reason and it wasn't to get a better shot. If he wanted a good shot for reporting he would have stood back where he could get all of the action in view and less ambient noise.
CryEngine 3 - Real Time Indirect Lighting Tech Demo
The big deal about this video: Radiosity and Ambient Occlusion, both of which are normally VERY cpu intensive techniques and previously impossible realtime.

Some of the stuff shown could (and has) been done previously as "faked" using shaders. I'm assuming they are now doing it correctly so that its easier to light scenes realistically in game.
The only problem is the in game footage is lacking a good demonstration of color vs. the demo scenes
How to Make a Fog Maker
Nice post. Dry ice machines, which is what this is, are called "rumble pots" in the SFX business, because the dry ice and water make a rumbling when introduced to one another. The dry ice fog is heavy and rolls along the ground. The "fog machines" you use to create lighter ambient smoke or a lot of concentrated smoke actually vaporizes mineral oil to create that effect.
