Won't You Be My Neighbor - Official Trailer

Esoog says...

I grew up watching Mr. Rogers. I love in the beginning of this trailer how he says he didnt feel like he needed to put on a funny hat. He wasn't a character. He was real, and that is what I liked about it. Don't get me wrong. When trolley, would take you to the imaginary castle, that was pretty awesome too.

It's not that Mr. Roger's Neighborhood are some of my fondest childhood memories, but thinking of the show, relates to so many other childhood memories...the look of the living room where I used to watch...my family being around...watching with friends...

Great....another afternoon of crying at my desk at work.

Probably nobody is following this vid anymore. I hope someone sees this comment.

Important article here. "The female price of male pleasure"

There are some bumps along the way as I read where I thought "wha???"

And.

Although it is long, every man and woman should read this. Reject what you must. I personally needed some more scientific data -- which isn't available because.... well, read the article.

[EDIT] And if you find yourself rejecting it entirely? Then allow me to quote Louis CK, an imperfect person with demons who is still flipping amazing -- Now is the time to listen.

King Tut - SNL

StukaFox says...

Listen -- do you know how much high-grade Peruvian flake we were hoovering back in the late 70's? Steve Martin was the perfect comedian for coke-sniffers: wild and energetic, creative on script and off the cuff. We liked our comedians Wild and Crazy and our afternoon bumps in little McDonald's coffee-stirrer spoons.

Those were the days, my friend, those were the days.

Eh, this is just not that funny. It's mildly amusing at best, and in that sense, it is classic SNL.

Doctor Forcibly Removed From United Flight For Overbooking

newtboy says...

United totally, 100% disagrees with your assessment. They say they were absolutely wrong and the passenger shares zero responsibility for what happened to him, something that never should have happened and never will again (according to the United President).

Edit: Also totally convinced United did the wrong thing, their shareholders. Ignoring any legal rights, the publicity this gained for them has cost United hundreds of millions in market value.

The guy went to the check in counter to discuss volunteering to fly later, and refused when he was told he would not fly until the next afternoon at best, not in a few hours. That was not acceptable and would cost him money and patients, which he told them. Then he got back on without incident.
Then he was forcibly removed.
Then he got back on again without incident, rambling and bleeding, now diagnosed with a broken nose, missing teeth, and a severe concussion.
And you support the company that had him attacked and concussed and let him back on the plane twice, not the one even United calls "the victim".

Also, why is no one upset that he managed to re-plane twice with no one even noticing?!? That's an insane security failure.

What the world must look like to you when you insist on being on the wrong side on every issue. You really must exist in a living hell.

The guy was removed once and then sneaked back on.

Rex Murphy | Free speech on campus

Ashenkase says...

Rex Murphy is a long-time, respected Canadian journalist. Unfortunately the joke goes "Rex Murphy, a mug too ugly for even radio" (he used to do the Sunday afternoon call-in show for CBC).

MilkmanDan said:

I totally agree with what he is saying, and am very glad that people are saying it.

...That being said, is it hopelessly shallow to wish that the person making the argument looked just a little bit less like the Crypt Keeper? Sex sells, man. I just don't see any 19-22 year old kid that has been sheltered enough to buy into SJW stuff listening to this guy. Unfortunate, but there it is.

that was awesome.
i hope del toro gets to make "mountains of madness",because i love the imagery he used in hellboy, which was VERY lovecraftian.

i stumbled upon lovecraft from my dad,and by accident.
my dad had a ton of the those sci-fi,horror pulp magazines from the 40's and 50's in the basement.

i think i was around 9 or 10 and my dad had given me the job of clearing out the basement, because he was going to remodel it..and i remember coming across this old,and dusty cardboard box filled with those books.

i spent the entire afternoon reading..and reading..and reading.
and it was lovecraft that i fell in love with, although at my young age he was not an easy read.you have to absorb lovecraft rather than actually read him.

this was the weekend i also discovered isaac asimov, ray bradbury, fred saberhagen and jack l chalker.

so i fell in love with lovecraft before stephen king.

and then my big sister tried to introduce me to dean r koontz.
and well..fuck dean r koontz, fucking hack and plagiarist.

seriously..fuck dean r koontz.

There are now More Solar Panels than people in Australia

Asmo says...

Few points...

We have no options for serious load shifting to utilise all that solar power in the evenings when it would make a difference. And power companies refuse to trust it for baseload power, so they still generate what they estimate they need for base load, and pay for rapid generation to handle spikes. Most electricity generated from home solar in Aus is wasted.

Without battery backups, the best production of the day goes to the energy company for 8 cents, and we buy back power from them (generated by coal of course) at night for 36 cents. Our energy companies aren't going to pay a premium for power they really don't give a crap about.

Most panels in Aus face north/east, to generate the largest amount of energy. When most people aren't home to use it. Instead, panels should face north/west to generate the most power in the afternoon when we come home from work/fire up air conditioners/start cooking etc. And even then, the power than is generated is but a fraction of what is consumed during peak periods due to the setting sun.

Annnnd most people in Australia do not even check their systems to see if they're still doing anything... It's estimated 14% of all home solar systems are currently non-functional due to faulty panels, inverter or both.

Until the point in time comes when energy companies can create a way to load shift solar production to ensure continuity of power, or household power storage units pricing comes down enough to be viable, non industrial solar in Australia is mostly feel good propaganda.

And while a number of coal plants have closed recently, it's not due to lack of demand as solar take up reduces requirement for coal fired power... It's because the plants are not viable any more to run and owners do not want to run at a loss. Each one that closes represents a significant portion of our overall generation being lost, with no core plan for continuity (wind and solar are not being considered as a core strategy currently).

I'm all for saving the planet, but the science/facts on solar outweigh the feel goods. Perhaps instead of patting ourselves on the back, we should be thinking about a better plan.

Microburst Event Causes Planes to Take Off

Babymech says...

From a reddit (fwtw) on the topic :

"I'm very curious as to how you got this video, i was under the impression it never left the airfield.
This happened in April 2014, this past year. The weather is absolute crap here, especially for soaring. Well... we get good weather sometimes. Anyway, it's not uncommon for those TG-16A's to go up with a 25 knot gust... But i digress.
The cadets were pushing in because winds were out of limits and the weather was getting worse... and BAM! Microburst.
This microburst hit right next to the airfield. The tower spotted it early, gave a verbal warning "look out..." and cadets are trained to do the following: grab a wing (glider) and turn broadside into the wind and put the spoilers out. The tows were not so easy... nor lucky. Their takeoff speed is about 50 knots, and none of them were powered up when they lifted off the ground, to give you an idea of how bad the wind was. Their only maneuver is to face into the wind and pray they dont actually take off. The tows that took off left for COS airport... it took another 30 minutes of holding gliders before the tower let the cadets start moving the gliders.
As for taking off... 55 kt gusts are the highest the Academy has had in a long time. Considering there were a half-dozen other aircraft within 100 ft of the tows, along with people (i.e. cadets around/in the gliders) if he was moving too far from his position in the queue, the safest action is to get some altitude and try and leave the microburst. Or at the very least put some altitude and distance in between himself and the cadets and aircraft. You saw how slow the tows in the air were moving relative to the ground... those were HARSH winds.
At about 0:20, you can see a cadet hanging onto the wing of a glider on the bottom of a screen. This wind was scary. I don't know if anyone was up at the time, but full tempo ops can be up to 5 tows and 8 gliders... on a standard afternoon training day 3 tows and 4 or 5 gliders is normal. It looks like they were already pushing the gliders to the hangar..."

So are there pilots in any of those tow planes?
(edit)
The little i could find seems to indicate the planes had pilots.

On the other hand we need to take a stronger stance against miscreants. They can put a serious toll on our ability to have a peaceful afternoon. Better remove them early on.

NOW It Makes Sense Why Preachers Need Private Jets

Payback says...

Three ministers were chatting one day about how each faith decided what part of donations went to the church, and which part went to God's Works.

The Catholic Minister said, "We draw a circle on the floor, and toss the donations in the air. What falls in the circle, is for the Church, what falls outside is for the Lord."
The Protestant Minister said, "We do almost the same, only what falls within the circle is for the Lord."
Finally, the Evangelical Minister said, "Every Sunday afternoon, we too throw our donations in the air, and whatever God catches, he keeps!"

Making a Sling-Primitive Technology

Chairman_woo says...

I have limited experience with slinging, but IMHO it's already very much the same as just throwing a stone out of your hand in terms of aim and how it feels.

You basically just release the knot at the point of the swing where you would anyway. Feels very natural.

There's also very little gain in swinging it more than one revolution above your head, almost all the power comes from the flick at the last moment.

I found getting a good power stroke (ooh er Mrs etc.) was the harder part.

A good afternoon of farting about and you could probably kill someone fairly proficiently with one though.

Someone with a lifetime of practice would be terrifying, at least as much as a good archer I would imagine.

MilkmanDan said:

Would be interesting to hear if he thinks that using the sling could get as natural as throwing with one's own arm, given enough practice.

I'm getting visions of "Groundhog Day" in my head -- "6 months, 4-5 hours a day, and you'd be an expert."
