Great White Shark Cage Breach Accident

noims says...

Farewell and adieu to ye fair Spanish ladies.

"Cage goes in the water, you go in the cage. Shark's in the water, shark goes into the cage. Now everybody is in the cage."

So to be clear, this shark enters the cage from the side, right. So this shark just wrestles itself through the bars towards its prey in the cage. Back to bungee jumping for me....

The Wire creator David Simon on "America as a Horror Show"

radx says...

First things first: I read the article you linked as well as three others by the same author, given that he's teaching at a nearby facility. His article "The Three Types of Austerity" was quite enough to know that I'll never see eye-to-eye with him, or anyone of the same views.

"[Austerity] frees up resources for private investment" is a statement that does not match my perception of reality, given the absolute abundance of (financial) resources within the eurozone. It's a lack of demand for investments that's the problem, not supply. Savings are at record highs, investment is at an all-time low.

So, demand vs supply... we all know that discussion won't be resolved here, ever. It's utterly pointless. Same for the gold standard vs fiat, inflation good or bad, or any related discussion, really.

Instead, I'll try to reply to unrelated statements.

------------

"Do you think The Wire paid for their production assistants' healthcare? Did they make more than the $50/day for their 12 hour days (if they weren't working for free as "interns" for the 'privilege' of 'paying their dues' in 'the industry')?"

I know nothing about the situation on set of The Wire. My assumption is that it involved the regular amount of abuse of labour, including unpaid interns.

------------

"Haha, of course, "liberals" get a pass from other "liberals", but no pass for the Kochtopus (even though the Kochs give way more money to charities than The Wire would even be able to)."

Well, good for them. But I don't see why you drag them in here. You made a set of rhetoric questions aimed at hypocrisy by David Simon. I pointed out my view that any possible hypocrisy is dwarfed by the point he made vis-a-vis guilt/Perkins/watch/whatever.

------------

"Yeah? Like you know (the other) David Simon and can vouch for his "lack of guilt?" And "guilt" about what? Having money? Being successful?"

Feeling guilty about the discussion amongst the establishment regarding, for instance, the minimum wage. He finds it questionable how one can argue against giving a fella at Burger King 10-12 bucks an hour without feeling guilty for it. That's the disconnect we're talking about. When extremely wealthy individuals deny even the crumbs to the folks at the bottom.

Shamelessness was my addition, my interpretation. It was aimed at the demand for tax breaks and subsidies for extremely profitable corporations or extremely wealthy individuals. I would feel ashamed for any demands to my benefit if a) I didn't objectively need them and b) they would come at a detriment to others in worse situations than me.

Since I'm arguing from a different economic perspective than you, a shortfall in tax income (aka tax breaks) to me means either more taxes at another place, probably from weaker entitities who can't afford to buy their own representative, or a cut in essential services. I operate under a very broad definition of human dignity and see it as the first and foremost objective. Food, shelter, health, etc for all -- which might just be a reason why some people refer to me as a "pinko commie".

------------

"Does he? Really? How? And how are you doing more for "society" than that? Who are you and what exactly is your great "contribution" to society?"

He "weakens" society, economically, by suppressing aggregate demand. The more wealth you accumulate, the less of it, as a percentage, translates into demand. For an economy that depends on the circulation of goods and services, a massive and non-temporary accumulation of debt or savings (same coin, different sides) in the hands of single players (be it state, corporation or individual) chokes up the system. Less demand, less investment, less growth.
Accumulation is all fine and dandy if it translates into economic activity, but given the pathetic % of GDP that is being invested, despite mountains of unused cash that are forced into financial shenanigans looking for profit, I'd say it is dead weight and a drag.

But since you apparently share the views of Hollenbeck, all of that was probably hogwash to you.

------------

To answer your question: a human being and my great contribution to society is my charming personality, of course.

And with that, I bid you adieu. I've had long-ass discussions about Snowden/surveillance and other topics that led nowhere and I'm not interested in having one about economic theory, especially not in a second language. The floor is all yours, including the last word.

Acute Dupitis (Sift Talk Post)

bareboards2 says...

Everyone keeps talking about hurt feelings. Since I am often in the middle of these dupe kerfuffles, I must assume that ya'll are talking about me.

Let me be clear. My feelings aren't hurt. Yes, I get attached to "my" wording, and "my" shiny new star, and "my" sometimes buttload of votes. I feel sad that a little triumph, a tiny little triumph, turns out not to be so.

But I honestly am thinking about the Sift as a whole. The Sift is a better place when there are good quality videos. That Bill Maher one, when it was duped -- 75 votes went to the original sifter, with only 4 duplicate votes (those of us with bad memories who hadn't realized they had already seen the original -- and that includes me). That means 75 new people liked a quality video. 75! This is only good for the Sift.

I have been very clear that I don't have a problem with duping after a currently popular duped video has run its course. I'll do it myself, "take away" my own shiny star, great title, and little mountain of votes. I'll wave a fond and sad adieu. But I will do it so the Sift isn't cluttered up with duplicates. That is the real issue, right? We don't want to be YouTube. I love this site and want it to be the highest quality.

No hurt feelings here, I assure you.

As for the idea that a dupe is keeping off another "new" vid from being in the Top 15 -- I can see that. All I can say is caca occurs -- caca if the dupe is immediately booted off because it is successful, and caca that a dupe takes up a spot that could go to another vid. Choose your caca of choice, that is subjective and everyone brings their life experience to the choice. Sometimes things really are either/or with no compromise possible. Make a choice and go with it.

i'm just looking at this in a theoretical sense, based on mass ice melt and it's likely repercussions. apparently others have looked at this more thoroughly than i have. If i had known this earlier, it would have saved time pointing out fairly obvious things to rather confrontational people.

people.
Seismic activity has increased along with global warming.
Logic, physics, and probability all say that when you shift the mass of the earth (ice caps melting), seismic activity will increase. And it has, by a lot...in the last 30 years.
The poles are shifting.
This is the earth adjusting.
This is akin to shifting the mass of a spinning toy top.
It doesn't matter what you believe. You can believe in an invisible god-man in the sky too. This is about physics and reality. and it is going to get worse.

What you are saying might be true , but u have presented it in the most retarded way.
Also Evan though global warming is happening and ice caps are melting that does not necessarily mean there is causal link with seismic activity of curse there might be but its the kind of claim where u need to back it up with some evidence and sources.
"It doesn't matter what you believe. You can believe in an invisible god-man in the sky too. This is about physics and reality" ~ I think I get what you are trying to say with this but your communicating it all wrong, A christain could say exactly the same thing but focused on how god is real. Making a statment like that is uselss its the evidence and scientific method behind what is sead that will sway any sain person to believe in something or believing in something that is inline with reality.
Lol i Myself have not very clearly exsplaind why what u have said is retarded but im sure if you think about it you will see why what u said was not exactly cunstructive evan though im pritty sure u r on the right page with things.

Science, especially theoretical science is based on probability. Probability is a a process comprised mainly of inductive reasoning. k? this is looking at trends and connecting the dots. Physics...and simple probability. There are no definitives, no absolutes. It is virtually impossible to create a hard science in this realm...we simply don't have the tools.
Einstein's theories were still "theories", and have been proven throughout time (mainly in the mathematical realm). But they were theories based on probability. Asking "what if" and looking at liklihoods.
Our beliefs, or our hopes for absolutes do nothing to affect probability. And scientific "proof" is often for sale.
thanks for the opportunity to clarify.

Although yes on a quantum level things are bassed on probability and ultimetly u can keep asking why unttill nothing makes anny sense , Its a fact that on our scale of interaction with the world things can be prodicted and understood to a level that alows for us to utilise scence and prodict and understand things to a high level.
I dont evan understand the overall point you are making you are contradicting yourself and going all over the place .
Instead of spewing all this talk out next time you want to make an objective claim why dont you just stick to stating the claim and then backing it up with evidence ?
You saying "It doesn't matter what you believe. You can believe in an invisible god-man in the sky too. This is about physics and reality. and it is going to get worse." does nothing to help anyone you simply cannot make a claim and then say LOGIC AND REASON GO TO SHOW I AM RIGHT.
lol what u put is like me saying , "LOgic and resoin go to show that the sun is smaller than a bannana you can belive in an invisable sky god-man . this is about phiusics and reality and its only gona get more bananery."

MY issue was not with the ice caps melting thing , as i said that could be true ore false , i was just pointing out all the other stuff you typed in aditoin to that which was superfalouse and made little sense and if anything undermined the intail point u were getting at ,

you posted link to sauces after which is fine , i think if you had just done that on your first post , made objective statement x and posted suces to back it up , then people imideatly would have been able to just debate the sources and progress there knowlage.

Thing is you actually come across as a non native English speaker ( evan more so than me lol although im sure my spelling is worse)

Thoughts on the Top 15 (Sift Talk Post)

kronosposeidon says...

>> ^dag:
The reason that the top 15 is cool- is because a video does stay around for a while and gets more attention. It becomes a focal point for the community with an interesting comment thread evolving around it.

If you shorten the time that a video gets to live in the top 15, you'll have higher turnover of videos, sure- but overall it will be less interesting as an achievement.

I think most everyone here agrees that the Top 15 is cool, but what precisely makes it cool? Does a 4 day period make it cooler than a 3 day period? I don't think so. With a 3 day period that starts from the published date every video will still have a chance to rack up major votes, and yet they won't monopolize the Top 15 quite as long. This will give other videos that are equally deserving a better shot at the big time, and it will also make the list fresher and more interesting. That, to me, is what's cool.

Right now as I'm writing this, the laughing Haitian weatherman has 176 votes, and yet it STILL has almost 16 hours before it will drop off the top. I like it; I gave it my upvote (as did many other people); but it will be in the Top 15 for almost half a week before it bids us adieu. Talk about wearing out your welcome. I wouldn't let that dude stay at my house more than three days, tops.

Seriously, this is about videos not becoming stale. Also from a business standpoint, I think more people would be inclined to visit a video site if they knew every day there would be several new and interesting videos to watch in the Top 15.

We're not talking about up-ending a time honored tradition here, just fine tuning it to make it a little better. I realize that whatever the membership decides here is not binding in any way, but I think if enough experienced sifters vote in favor of either my original proposal or Zifnab's proposal, you should give it serious consideration.

And on a more serious note, if either rottenseed's or Sarzy's comments about changing my avatar back to balloon animal Jesus receives 15 votes or more, I'll change it back. Because I believe in America.
