Chris Pratt's epic card trick fail

moonsammy says...

TRICK SPOILER:
At :54 he sees the top two and the bottom card of the deck. At 1:04 he moves the bottom card to the top, so he now knows the top 3, with the 3rd being what will become Will's card. His shuffles don't have an impact on the top 3, and the middle pile he places down comes from the top of the deck. When he looks through the cards later he puts the ace where he wants it, and the rest is just careful manipulation to keep it hidden while showing a bunch of other cards. He definitely has solid showmanship though!

No Man's Sky Expectations Vs. Reality

Jinx says...

I'm not sure I really fault the developers that much, although I hear the PC release is a fucking hot mess atm... Some of the complaints come across as, "The developer should have warned me it wasn't going to live up to my completely unrealistic expectations".

Why is it that when people see a trailer for a movie that view it with a degree of healthy skepticsm, but when its a trailer for an enormously ambitious game made by a small studio with a release date 2 years or so away people lose their fucking minds. And its not even just poor lil jimmy consumer, the game/tech press apparently forgot the lessons of Spore completely in 2014. I guess hype gets more pageviews?

I imagine that in 5 years time they'll be hailing another messiah that has apparently created an entire universe because maths. Turns out being God is actually quite a difficult feat. WHO'D HAVE THUNK? -props to whatever divine may exist btw - we're really struggling to create a sequel that justifies the original.

On the plus side the soundtrack by 65daysofstatic is ace. Their music probably contributed in a large degree to the "success" of that E3 trailer, so, you know, maybe it wasn't completely unrepresentative of the final product.

I funny the broader furor about this game hilarious. Developer previews game without showing any meaningful gameplay, progression or storyline. Then people are shocked, shocked the game contains none of these things. This train wreck was predictable as hell, right down to the committed fanboys digging in their heels. I hope this is features as a tech demo on the latest 3DMark.

Mississippi River Hydrostatic Model

oblio70 says...

"Years earlier, they had amassed...", before building the model.

The model came later as a result of the failed projects, realizing that a symptomatic approach was flawed. The model was to take a more holistic methodology to addressing the flooding along the Mississippi.

The timeline is as follows:
the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927:
Flood Control act of 1928-
Army Corps of Engineers gets to work
Sec. of Commerce H.Hoover directs Flood Relief
towns & cities which had flooded get levees
The Great Flood of 1937:
towns downstream of newly protected communities get flooded.
ACE begins with simple models in dirt
1943 gets funding to build largest scale model for study:
1"=1000' horizontal, 1"=100' vertical
German POWs used for initial labor.

sorry that wasn't clear enough before. There was no model before.

... The way you wrote this---implies to me that they either misunderstood the model or the the model gave them flawed data. Or perhaps, that they got good data and ignored it (lol). I'm curious: which was it?

Father and Daughter, Both With Tourettes Play Cards

eric3579 says...

"The game we are playing we know as 'black jack', it bears no resemblance to the American game 'blackjack'.

The aim of the game is to get rid of your cards.
You remove one black jack from the deck, it plays no part in the game.
You start with 7 cards
Take 4 cards from the deck and lay them face up, these are your start cards, you then lay either the same suit or the same number on one of the start cards. If you have two or three of the same card, you can lay them all down in a single turn, if you cannot lay a card, you pick up from the face down deck.

If a player lays a king, the other player has to pick up 3 cards, a queen 2, a jack 1, an ace 4 and the 'black jack' 5. If the 2nd player lays a king on top of the 1st players card, then the 1st player has to pick up double the amount, in the case of a king, 6 cards, if the 1st player then lays yet another king, then the 2nd player would have to pick up 9 cards and so on."

Rose McIver's Sick Magic Trick Pisses Off Jimmy Kimmel

Fusionaut says...

I actually have a deck of cards that is prepared so that you can do this trick. To prep the deck you sand the back of every card so that there is a bit of a rough surface. When the backs of two cards are placed against each other they will stick together if enough pressure is applied but will slide apart if you ease off.

Cards are paired together so that they add up to fifteen (back to back) and suits are paired together as well (clubs with diamonds and hearts with spades). For instance you would pair the 2 of Diamonds with the King of Clubs, the 3 of Hearts with the Queen of Spades, the 4 of Spades with the Jack of Hearts, the 5 of Clubs with the 10 of Diamonds et cetera... Aces are paired with each other.

When you set up the deck you set it up so that all of the clubs and hearts are on one side and if you flip the deck over you will see all of the diamonds and spades. A spare joker is used to mark which sides has the spades and diamonds and must be face down so it's back is seen when you pull the deck out. If the victim call out a diamond or spade you flip the deck over and find the corresponding card and the deck will look normal because of the joker's backside. If the victim calls out hearst or clubs you pull out the deck and remove the joker saying "oh, ho ho. How'd this get here?" and then find the corresponding card.

Just make sure that you sit down to do the trick so that people don't see that back of your deck...

Is my explanation okay? It's kind of a weird trick...

Edit: okay I got it kind of wrong but this video explains it waaaay better:

Who Is Stephen Colbert?

AeroMechanical says...

I think that's the way it's meant to be, and maybe I'd trust that one more. They made me take one of these professionally administered ones in school (engineering obviously... because everyone else doesn't need a test to tell them what their personality is like) and that's what it was like. Sort of like getting grilled by the fuzz, they ask you the same question in a bunch of different ways to get a more representative answer.

I don't remember my coding, but in the bar graphs I was pretty much exactly down the middle in every category, so I figure I aced it. Totally zen, that's me.

gave me a slightly different result (INTJ). The questions seemed repetitive and weird in that version, so I wouldn't recommend it except for comparing.
