Never quit; never surrender...

newtboy says...

*promote the never surrender mentality of rally racing.
You can only be sure you've lost if you've quit.
The first off road race I ever saw was a short course race in the LA Coliseum, and the front runner completely lost a front wheel with 2 laps to go...and continued on to win the race. I was hooked from then on.

RT-putin on isreal-iran and relations with america

Well, right until Pearl Harbor there were the do-fights and don't-fights. If the anti-war party hadn't been assassinated, ran out and broken, we wouldn't have had to fight Japan at all.

The problem is these people still ruled. Imagine them pressing forward with a nuclear plan (which would have absolutely occurred if they thought they could get away with it.) Interestingly Germany sent material to them to dump on our shores as a sort of nuclear bomb but we intercepted it. It is thought that we used it against Japan, which is hilarious. But I digress.

The point is--even if they planned on surrendering, they had no intention of concessions. Would those in power (who were as guilty as the Nazi) willingly turn themselves over for trial? Huehue.

As far as the Soviet issue, yeah, your facts go without saying. And Truman did get his results--he got Stalin to restrain himself (In a certain way...though there was the cold war.)

Very. Even radio messages were intercepted that made that clear. The USA chose to ignore those, play them down.
Truman had his agenda with the Soviets. What does Russia has to do with Japan? Pretty simple actually. After Germany was defeated Russia was advancing very quickly towards Japan, and Truman didnt want them in Japan. Truman hated Stalin with a passion and used every opportunity to humiliate him or show Americas strength to him. One particular event was very telling, after he announced the nuclear bombs to Stalin and expected respect, fear and acknowledgement from Stalin but instead got indifference and burst in rage about Stalins reaction. Even Churchill noticed how much Truman changed after he got the bomb. He seemed like an insecure boy who suddenly got the power of a superhero. A very dangerous combination and it proved to be fatal for at least the Japanese and was pretty much the sole reason for the cold war.
Japan was bombed not only once but twice, even though the USA knew they would surrender soon, not because of them fearing more human loss on their side, but because they feared Russia would be able to reach Japan if they waited longer.

Was Japan really that close to surrendering when America dropped the bomb? I get the impression he's exaggerating that.

Sadly, until the US's whitewashing of history was complete, it was pretty widely-spread that Japan had been attempting to surrender for up to a week before the bombs were dropped, but the US didn't want to lose out on its opportunity to show off it's new war-toy.
This is widely disputed today, but I honestly can't tell if it is for reasons of rewriting the past, or that it honestly wasn't true.
(I'd also heard several times in my life that Japan had subs spotted near Hawaii before the Pearl Harbor bombing, but it was 'ignored' so an attack would justify the US's entry into WW2).
So obviously it's almost impossible to determine facts from history when every generation tries to remove the traces of its mistakes, but I *do* know the Japan-surrender was a pretty widely controversial one, and potentially true. What I know of the US today, that detail is another one of those dark pieces of history I can look at and say: "...Yeah, they would do that".

If the current Greek proposal is actually the one being published just about everywhere, they might as well sign it in the replica of Marshal Foch's carriage in Compiègne. It's even worse than the one they had their referendum on.

As if that wasn't bad enough, Jamie Galbraith substantiated AEP's claim that the referendum was horseshit to begin with.

They screwed the pooch, even I'd agree to that if they were to accept this unconditional surrender. The anti-austerity movement on the left would be compromised to such a degree, leaving only the anti-EU forces of the right credible in their opposition to austerity. The recession cult will have their permanent austerity -- and the bigots will have their revival of nationalism.

The reports I have seen say that the usual suspects are still demanding a complete surrender. Pierre Moscovici is quoted as saying "They know what they have to do, they know what we expect".

Judge backs charges against cops in Tamir Rice killing

bobknight33 says...

Is that the "gun" the kid had and was point / waving? A colt 1911. A great hand gun to have, no orange tip? Where is parental control on this?

It seems to me that since the cops pulled up directly on the kid they had not choice except for self protection.

That being said the cops should not have pulled up that close but close enough to have a stand off and have the kid surrender the weapon.

Star Wars Battlefront Reveal Trailer

Payback says...

They were there, the rebels just tried to avoid them.

Case in point, when Luke surrendered to Vader, there was an AT-AT thumping around.

This actually makes me more excited than the new movie trailer. I've been burned by too many Star Wars movies in the past, while most Star Wars games that I've played were at least serviceable if not quite enjoyable. I can't wait to drive some speeders through Endor...if only you could target some Ewoks.
Nice to see they brought the robot camels to the forest this time. ;-)

Cops Tazer Horse Thief, Then Beat And Kick Over 50 Times

Praetor says...

Watched 15 seconds of the beating and stopped watching.

Then forced myself to watch it all the way through because being uncomfortable with it is no excuse not to bear witness.

Watched person after person come on screen and join in the beating and had to stop watching again.

If they are going to treat people like this when they try and surrender peacefully, how do they think people will react in the future?

Sweet mother of fuck, my government is now openly treating Greece like a vassal. They went Versailles on them, with complete surrender not being good enough.

Driver Beaten And Tazed As St Louis Police Shut Off Dashcam

Surrender yourself to the whim of a gang of thugs, or suffer the whim of a gang of thugs. Interesting proposal considering they clearly don't care about adhering to the law.

I affectionately refer to this pathetic excuse-making as 'the wife-beater'. Cos if she doesn't want to get savagely beaten, she should just do what i said, right?

Looks like the cops went too far.

Yet all of this could have been prevented by simple compliance with a police officer's orders.

So if you reap the wind, expect the whirlwind.
