jon stewart-rage against the rage against the machine
That's absolutely not what's been reported. The reports have repeatedly said his hyoid was severely injured and he asphyxiated.
Also, we can not take the word of the public coroner when it comes to officer involved death. Like the DA, they work with the cops daily, and bend over backwards to 'help' them repeatedly. Independent prosecutors and coroners are needed on EVERY officer involved death, without them we'll see you all as members of a deadly, powerful gang of thugs.
Cops should have TALKED to him instead of deciding 'he's not complying fast enough, get him fellas' and dog piling on him, starting from behind with a hold specifically disallowed by the department. (I'm glad you didn't try to say he wasn't choked, because that would just be ridiculous). That's really overboard for someone selling loosies, and was really, obviously about contempt of cop.
It might be a good idea for them to not laugh and joke about it while the body is still lying on the sidewalk and the family is filming them too, btw. (I've seen the extended video)
Perhaps he should have cooperated, but in no way would that ensure he'd be alive. The 77 year old man cooperated fully, (when a cop just nastily grabs at your papers for no reason and without saying a thing, pulling away is expected and acceptable) and was beaten and tasered for his trouble. Cooperation simply means the cops won't be hurt, not the citizen. Many many people are injured and killed cooperating with police and in full custody yearly. You somehow put the blame 100% on them and 0% on the police that have them under their control and have the duty to protect them. The rest of us have lost all trust in cops lately, and we feel if you have a duty you should perform it.
EDIT: How did 'cooperating' work out for this guy?

Garner didn't die from being choked. Coroner ruled there was no damage or obstruction to the trachea.
His system was weak and he died from the stress of resisting arrest. He should have cooperated and he'd be alive today.

TDS 2/24/14 - Denunciation Proclamation
And Just to be perfectly clear, secession predated the Lincoln administration! To ask, why didn't he do this or that is to ignore the situation he faced before he was even sworn in.
"On December 20, 1860, shortly after Abraham Lincoln's victory in the presidential election of 1860, South Carolina adopted an ordinance declaring its secession from the United States of America."
War to preserve the Union, not a Lincoln crusade to end slavery. Get it?
This is what happens when you get your history from political pundits like Thomas Wood Jr.
Try reading a real historical text on the period.
I recommend "Battle Cry of Freedom" by James McPherson.

Drunk off-duty deputy tries to arrest female soldier at bar
He's a person who became a marine (a shitty one), then a cop (gang member) to abuse power and illicit control over others. His character screams it, his words, his body language. A broken human in need of serious therapy.
I read now where officer Bell has been suspended without pay as a result of the incident. He'll be back on the street in no-time, harassing more innocents and abusing women with a badge and a gun soon, residents of South Carolina who don't want his shit on the streets should demand his accountability in this matter. But they won't, they are too busy being programmed by the television and officer dickbag will be back on the street in no time.
Welcome to America. YOUR AMERICA
If she wasn't a soldier, a member of a large institution that would have probably looked into it themselves, I doubt it would have backfired on the cop as much as it did. In my opinion of course. I just don't see a common college student getting that fast of a turnaround on this guy getting canned, etc...where there would be a lot more "doubt" (read doubt as: chance to cover up because the college probably isn't going to look too hard) as to what happened. Even with a video.

Police Road Rage
All kinds of interesting here.
If I'm understanding it right, it's a NC cop, in SC, so traffic regulation is definitely not one of his duties.
A bit of homework that makes this more interesting (though no more acceptable): There are 5 states with no "keep right" law, and North Carolina is one of them.
South Carolina, however, has a very detailed one. As an ordinary motorist, the cop was definitely breaking the law in SC (though an SC cop could have done that as part of his duty, that's specifically in SC's law).
No one got injured or imprisoned, cop quit, everyone wins. Hopefully they dropped the charge against the our driver. Best solution to a bad situation, as long as we keep it nice and visible.
Police Road Rage
Think i heard It said that it was a North Carolina cop off duty in South Carolina (said at about 1:00, comments that hes a jackass). He wouldn't have any jurisdiction to pull anyone over. Hes just some guy in the "company car".
Why doesn't he just pull him over if he so pissed off surely he could abuse his power more that way. Is this one of those cases where he has no jurisdiction on that road?.
Maybe this is the only way he can get the motorist to follow the speed limit the other car seems to be doing the same speed as the Police car, and its only when the guy in the big truck overtakes and accelerates past him that you see him pull over and brake. Stupid behavior i know but after you have pulled a few people from wrecks im sure trying to keep speeders of our roads would be one of your concerns too.
Is America too big for democracy?
I've never heard of the Abbeville institute. Apparently it's a neo-confederate think tank with interest in secession according to wiki and the SPLC.
Abbeville Institute (wiki)
In 1998, Livingston was instrumental in the founding of the Abbeville Institute.[citation needed] According to its website, the Institute is "an association of scholars in higher education devoted to a critical study of what is true and valuable in the Southern tradition". Its principal activities are a summer school for graduate students and an annual scholar's conference.[4] It focuses particularly on issues of secession which are kept out of mainstream academia.[5] The Institute is named for the South Carolina hometown of John Calhoun, and a pre-Civil War hotbed of secession.[6]

As for the argument itself, I don't know what size has to do with democratic principles. Either you believe in them or you do not. As the world gets bigger, the need to work together is increased, not decreased, IMO.
